LETTERS FROM ABSENT COMRADES.
Long Branch, N. J. July 17th, 1S82.
David Ilanesj M. D.
Dear Sir — I am just in receipt of your letter of tlie i2th
inst., inviting me to attend the reunion of the 21st 111. Infantry
(my old regiment), from the 19th to the 21st of September next,
at Terre Haute, Ind. I am sorry to send my regrets; but I
must do so. It always affords n\e i')leasure to meet with the
veterans of the regiment with which I had the honor to serve
first in the suppression of rebellion. But distance, and other
engagements, will prevent my doing so on this occasion.
Very truly yours, U. S. Grani.
Danville, Ills.; Sept. 19lh, 1882.
To the Survivors 21 s< Ills. Vol. Infantry.
Dear Comrades — Until within a very few days; I promised
myself the great pleasure of meeting with you to da.> , but I find
I cannot. My Conference meets to-morrow at Lincoln; Ills.,
and our reunion is to be, I see, on Thursday. This makes it
impossible to be with you at oar meeting. Hope you may have a
good time. You know I am always with the Old Twenty-First
in heart. Yours, E. D. Wilkin.
Tuscola, Ills., Sept. 18th, 1882.
Comrades 2\st //As. Vol. Infantry.
As I cannot be with you, in person, please accept a sold-
iers greeting. Trusting tliat your reunion, this time, will prove
a grand success, and that I may be permitted to meet with you
all again at some other time and place.
I am respectfully. Jas. L. Rket,
LateSurg, 21st Ills. Vols,
9
Decatur, It.l., Aug. 14th, 1882.
W. A\ Hunter^ A. G. Austin and Dr. J. E. Link.
Conn-ades — Your invitation to attend reunion at Terre
Haute, Sept. 19th, 20th and 21st, I find upon my return liome.
If the disposal of time, at such date, is under my control, I shall
do ni.>self the pleasure of being with you. As time goes on,
we all grow older, and the ties which once bound us, grow
stronger with the age ; at the best, we cannot meet in body many
years, but we trust in spirit hence in reunion without day.
This coming together, annually, is growing to be, like the pil-
grim's religion, to worship at the lioly shrine and offer up obla-
tions to Deity ; with us, I trust, it is a pilgrimage to the shrine
of a eountry'.s devotion, by its surviving soldiers, to the holy
altar of patriotism, lovingly and trustingly. I will do my best
to be with you in person — but cannot say certain at this date,
the disposition of time on the days you have fixed. You will
have a good time. You are entitled to all the pleasures possible;
keeping in mind, that our names, are of a certainty to be en-
rolled upon the roll call, which relates under its proper head-
ing—that "we are absent — accounted for" on the muster-day of
eternity. Present my best wishes to the boys and believe me,
Very truly, your obd't. serv't. Chas. H. Fuli,er,
1st Ad.i't. of the Gallant 21st Ills.
Xenia, Ills., Sept. 18th, 1882.
David Hanes, M. D.
Dear Sir — Say to my comrades that I fully intended to be
present with them to day, but owing to a press of work, (in-
creasing at the last moment,) I am unable to attend. Enclosed
please find 25c. in postage stamps to pay dues. May you have a
good time, and may the friendship renewed be as lasting as it is
pleasant. I remain yours by t!ie ties that shall ever bind us
together, John A. Peirce.
Centralia, Ills., Sept. 20th, 1882.
Comrades 2\st Ills. Vol. Infantry.
Up to within a few hours of the time for train starting
that should have taken me to the reunion, I confidently expect-
ed to meet you again, but at this late hour find that my business
arrangements will not permit me to leave home! These annual
meetings have become to me events in life fondly looked for-
ward to, and to find myself compelled to forego the pleasure of
meeting with you at Terre Haute, is a great disappointment.
Hoping you are enjoying a pleasant time, and consoling myself
witli the hope of being permitted to meet with you often in the
future. I am, as ever, your comrade. I. S. Taylor.

Ccnnrades :
Since the incei)tioii of the annual reunions of my old re^-
inaent (the 21st Ills.,) it has not been my good fortune to assem-
ble with them but once, and I had such a joyous time then, that
eacli year I have promised myself that the following would find
me one of the number, but "nian proposes while God disposes"
and circumstances each year as time comes around forces my
absence. Now I am 'way up here almost to the northern limit
of our great country, and business engagements will prevent
my being with you, but that you will haveajoll.y good time I
am well assurt'd, I also feel assured that the citizens of Terre
Haute will not have to mourn the loss oi' one single rooster, even
if it does crow, as I have no doubt the ''good cheer" will be in
abundance and to spare. With my best wishes for a good time
and a kind remembrance by my old comrades,
I remain, fraternally, C H. Borrows.
loLA, Kansas, Sept. 6th, 1882.
W F. Tlirnter, A. G. Austin, Dr. J. E. Link and others :
Dear Sirs and Comrades — Your invitati(.n to attend the
rcunifin of our old Regiment on the 19th and 2nth, reached me
at this place some days since, and much as I would like to be
there to greet my old comrades, and take them by the hand, cir-
cumstances entirely beyond my control render it impossible for
me to attend. Say to my old friends, and especially to the mem-
l)ers of my old company, who may be there, that though absent
in body, yet T am with them in spirit, and hope they may enjoy
many pleasant reunions in this life, and a great and glorious re-
union of every member on that brightand shining shore beyond
the dark river. My kindest and best wishes attend you all, now
atid hereafter. T am, with great respect, your comrade,
J. W. Cl.ARK,
Tiate Capt. C Co. 21st Tils.

Paducah, I^y., Sept. 16th, 1882.
To the Survivors 21 .s-^ Ills. Vol. Infantry.
T regret, owing to sickness in my family, that I cannot
meet with you at Terre Haute, Ind., on the 19th, 2()tb and 21st,
but while T am absent from you my heart is with you. Tt would
afTcrd me much pleasure to meet "Grant's Old Regiment" once
again, and with the boys call to memory the struggles of the
past. Hoping you may have a pleasant reunion, T close, send-
ing my kindest regards to ail.
Truly youis, ,lAJri<:s M. Wvk<ii<'k, Co. D.

Comrades :
Cannot be with you this year — have just been burned out,
and haven't time for anything but rebuilding and business gen-
erally. Hope next 3'ear to see your smiling faces, and in the
meantime if any of you wish to see a booming town just come
to Bozeman, the future capitol of Montana, and you will receive
a hearty welcoine. Hoping you may have a grand, good time,
I subscribe myself your comrade, B. F. Osborn.
RosiTA, Col., Aug. 25th, 1882.-
Brother Comrades :
I have received the invitation to attend the annual re-
union, and regret very much that I cannot be present, but trust I
will be with you in 1883. It would be pleasant indeed, to me,
if I could be present at this reunion, and recall the pleasanter
part of army life by three days of actual camp life with you.
Altliough I may be absent in body I will be present in spirit.
Hoping you ma^- have a jolly, jolly time,
I. am, very respectfully, yours, A. J, Newpobt.
