The record of a competition among 12 chambers of rhetoric from various Dutch cities, held at Haarlem. In his dedication to the Estates General (3*2) Heyns notes that he is himself the author of pieces presented by Het Wit Lavender of Amsterdam. Winners in the various categories are listed on 3*6v
Engraved t.p. vignette incorporating arms of Haarlem. The 13 folded engraved plates, composed of 2 to 5 sheets pasted together at the side margins and tipped onto stubs at the centerfold, depict the allegorical entrance processions of the participating chambers. The section devoted to each chamber's performance also includes an in-text engraving of its emblem and a woodcut song with music that it performed. Head- and tail-pieces. Decorated initials
Signatures: 3* 3[cross] A-3S
Bib. Belgica
Bound with: Haerlems juweel (Zwolle : Z. Heyns, 1608) -- Fabula comica (Zwolle : Zacharias Heyns, 1607)
Getty copy lacks the two additional dedications, present in only one other copy. See Bib. Belgica
In Getty copy additional impressions of two of the sheets from the procession of the chamber from Leyden have been attached at the end of that from Gouda (facing 3B1). Sections of the 5th plate (following Q4) and the 7th plate (following Cc4) have been pasted out of order
The 1st plate of the Getty copy is first variant, with the two sections numbered 1 and 2. Plates [2]-[13] are from the 2nd printing, with text in roman and gothic, except for plate [4], which has roman and italic and so is from the 1st printing. See Bib. Belgica
Binding: later vellum. Boards tooled in blind with ornamental central lozenge, two frames of double fillets, fleurons at corners of inner frame. Title written at head of spine
