VOL.9

CORONADO BEACH, CALIFORNIA, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER?, 1908.

NO. 83

:4

Cent City Tteni$

The Tent City season of 1908 is rapidly
drawing to a close. With the celbration of
the Modern Woodmen of America, which
commenced on Friday last, and closes with
today, the end of the season will be fitting-
ly observed with the closing cf their cele-
bration. The patronage for the month of
August has been exceedingly gratifying to
the management, and th:; fame of Tent
City as a summering place has been more
widely advertised than ever before by the
host of patrons who have gone away and
spoken words of praise for the ideal con-
ditions that are prevalent on this peninsula.
The large influx of visitors, who have been
here before, speaks well for the place, and
it is undeniably v.sible to all, that out of

this bank of sand has grown swiftly the
very apex of a settlement wherein the
pleasures of thousands of people are cen-
tered. Tent City itself has offered to its
patrons better comfort this year than ever
before. The new palm-roofed cottages
have won much favorable comment, and
the ocean pier has been a boon to the fish-
ermen. The children's pool has, of course,
drawn its large quota of bathers, and the
little ones have enjoyed themselves to their
hearts' content. The Tent City of Coro-
nado has enjoyed much popularity by the
way in which entertainment has been pro-
vided for the children and adults. Every
few days the little ones of the camp have
been gathered together and provided with
a general good time, in addition to giving
them plenty in the way of refreshments of
a kind which is always a delight to child-

ren. The "older folks" have had thei.'
card parties twice a week, and there has
been informal socials of a various charac-
ter all through the season; in fact, if it
were "something to do,'' one could always
find it here this seasoT. The conditions
for living has certainly been ideal; the sani-
tary part of the capip has been looked after
in such a manner that not one complaint
has been registered by those dwelling here.
The streets have been kept neat and clean.
The street car service to and from Tent
City has been efficient at all times, and one
fact that has been particularly noticeable,
there has not been a serious accident on
the grounds this year. Everybody takes a
vacation now-a-days, and no sooner is one
summer outing over than folks invariably

A. E. FLOWERS ..■■ EDITOR

Today's issue of the Tent City News
will be the last for the season of 1908.
The publishing of the paper commenced
with the formal opening of the camp on
June 17th, and one thousand copies have
been issued every day, making a total of
eighty-three thousand copies which
have been distributed FREE to campers
and patrons of this resort during the sea-
son. The NEWS has been well received,
in fact there were many many times when
the supply could not meet the demand. A
number of the advertisers have stated that
they have received good "results" from
their space, and we take this opportunity
of thanking them for their patronage. It is
with regret that the NEWS bids adieu to
the season of 1908, but hopes it will be
here to await you "When Summer Comes
Again.'* A. E. Flowers, Editor.

(Concluded from Page One)

begin to plan for the next season's free-
care time.

The thought of pleasant days past, and
the hope of others to come, makes
acceptable the many working days in a
city-pent life. Because of old associations
we desire to return frequently to the same
place where very happy times have been
passed. This is shown by the Tent City
register for each year's book contains the
names of early acquaintances. Take it
altogether Tent City's reputation as a sum-
mer resort has been spread far and wide,
and the popularity of the place has been
due, not only to the existing conditions
which prevail, but to the excellent manner
in which the place has been conducted un-
der the able management of Mr. J. S.
Hammond, who "As the Man Behind the
Gun,'' has placed this resort on a par with
any other summering place in the country.

If you reason with your love, you have
yet to experience its zenith. It is more
fruitless to argue with the genuine sort
than trying to quit cigarettes or stop biting
your finger nails.

Those fair-spoken createres, with ton-
gues tuned to sentiment, and raild eyes
fixed on the main chance.

from Miss Grace Wells the force marched
into the front office, and Mr. Browne was
sure some crisis was imminent, and he
looked as if he expected every minute
would bCithe next. Tommy McNevin came
in with a large bouquet of flowers and a
larger smile spread over his countenance.
This dispelled all fears of an uprising and
Mr. Browne's features began to expand,
only to be instantly contracted with surprise
when he was handed a beautiful cut glass
cigar jar, with a silver cover, on which
were engraved his initials in monogram,
and it was full of cigars. Another pack-
age was a box of 50 "Home Industry" ci-
gars, and still another package, after much
unwrapping, revealed two diminutive or-
phaned pigs. One of the force immediate-
ly applied for the position of dry nurse. The
surprise was complete in every detail, and
Mr. Browne places great value upon his
gifts. Another surprise in store for him
was the picnic dinner in the evening at
Tent City, where he unexpectedly found his
sisters and their families, Mr. and Mrs.
Edward Quayle, Mrs. Pearson, and his
brother H. H. Browne and wife, and Mr.
Buser, all quietly seated around a sump-
tuous spread awaiting the arrival of Mrs.
Eno, Mrs. T. R. Browne's mother, who
escorted the gentleman to the tent. Mrs.
Browne enjoyed all these surprises for her
husband just as much as though she had
been ignorant of the whole proceedings.
The following was found in the cigar jar:

Well, Thomas, this is a grand surprise,

For  you  on  your  birthday;
It has been slyly and skilfuly planned

By your associates in every way.

'Tis a pleasure for us to greet you.

On this anniversary occasion.
For we feel assured our friendship
Has not suffered by abrasion.

Our exasperating conduct
Has your patience severely taxed:

Yet devotion to your employers
Has never been relaxed.

May your life be long and happy,

May  your  health  always  be  good;
May your prosperity be prolific.

May you ne'er be misunderstood.

And when fortune smiles upon you.

And  prosperity  ends  your  strife;
May your latter days be comfort and peace.

For yourself and affectionate wife.

Jay Jay Bee.
