PREFACE

Among the early settlers of Springfield,
Mass., we find Ebenezer Miller and his wife
Hannah — living there in September, 1660.

Lieut. Thomas Miller lived there and
was killed by the Indians at the burning
of Springfield in 1675. He was a man of
prominence in the community and at the
time of the massacre held the office of Town
Constable; many interesting stories are told
of him and his wife concerning the part
they took during the witchcraft craze. He
evidently did not appreciate the honor of
the office to which he was elected at one
time — that of Fence Viewer — as he was
fined two shilling for not properly fulfilling
the duties of this office.

Obadiah Miller took the oath of al-
legiance at Springfield April 27, 1678.

PREFACE 3

Jolm Miller was an Ensign in the local
military company, living at Springfield,
1703-1735.

In 1736-38, Mrs. John Miller and John
Miller, Jr., were in full communion with
the Church at Springfield.

This genealogy begins with Captain
Joseph Miller, born 1698, probably a grand-
son of Lieut. Thomas Miller, above men-
tioned.

The work was begun some years ago,
during the life time of the late George
Byron Miller, of New York City. It is
completed in so far as it fulfills his inten-
tion, in that it lays the foundation correctly
for a large number of the descendants of
Captain Joseph Miller, born in 1698, of
West Springfield, Mass.

CAPTAIN J05LPH MILLER

1. CAPTAIN JOSEPH MILLER was

born in 1698, he died at West Springfield,
Mass., April 8, 1760, aged 62 years. He
married Mary Wilder; she died Nov. 24,
1759, aged 64 years. By occupation he was
a farmer. For many years he was in com-
mand of a company of soldiers and saw
much service in the Indian wars.

One of their children was

2. JOSEPH, b. May, 1724.

2. JOSEPH MILLER, m. Catharine
Fesey, born Dec, 1727, died April, 1811.
He died April 8, 1803, aged 79 years. He
was captain of a military company in the
Indian wars, and in the war of the Revo-
lution was Captain of the 11th Company of
the First Hampshire County Regiment,
Mass. Militia.

CAPTAIN JOSEPH MILLER 5

He was among the first settlers of Lud-
low, Mass., moving there with his family
from West Springfield, Mass., in 1751.

At this time the journey of 14 miles up
the Chicopee River, through a dense forest
was extremely hazardous; it is recorded
that they were mourned as dead by their
friends at their former home in West Spring-
field; a tradition of the family is that a
funeral sermon was preached over their
departure.

At the first Town Meeting held in Lud-
low, March 16, 1774, Joseph Miller was
elected Selectman and Treasurer, and at an
adjourned meeting he was appointed- a Dele-
gate to the Provincial Congress at Salem,
Mass. In the same capacity he again went
to Salem, then to Cambridge, Mass., and to
another session of the Congress at Water-
town, Mass., the next May. He was paid
11 pounds, 13 shillings, 2 pence for expenses,
and 2 shillings a day, for 32 days attendance.

CAPTAIN JOSEPH MILLER 6

He was the first Representative from the
town of Ludlow to the Massachusetts State
Legislature in 1785,

In 1786, a grandchild of Capt. Joseph
Miller was run over by a cart, this injury
terminating fatally; the body was the first
to be laid in the old burial ground of the
Congregational Church at Ludlow. In the
following year his barn was burned and in it
a little two year old granddaughter. A few
months afterward another grandchild, son
of Isaac Brewer, was taken away in early
manhood, followed soon by his heart-broken
father.

A relic of early days exhibited at the
Philadelphia Centennial, 1876, was a shoe
worn by Capt. Joseph Miller's grandchild.

3. AARON J. MILLER, married in
1780, Esther Burr, born April 9, 1763, died
Dec. 4, 1826. He died Nov. 4, 1838. He
was a distinguished physician and surgeon
and was a member of the Massachusetts
State Legislature.

He served as Surgeon in the Army during
the War of the Revolution. The following
record is of interest:

CAPTAIN JOSEPH MILLER 8

"Aaron J. Miller, Surgeon, 83 years of
age, of Hampden County, Mass., was allowed
a pension of $200 per year, Sept. 13, 1833,
and a payment of $600 was made to him on
this date, as pension for previous years."

The following from the Palmer, Mass.,
"Journal," illustrates the man: "He was
the first physician in Ludlow, Mass., and
was a very tidy sort of a man, distinguished
for wearing the best broadcloth he could
find and always eating molasses instead of
butter on his bread; drinking clear tea and
a very little old New England rum. He
was a rapid talker, made his fever powders
of camphor gum and loaf sugar and was
never known to hurt his patients with his
medicines. He usually walked when visit-
ing his patients, always accompanied by his
little dog. He was intolerant of others
opinions, and emphasized his own with fre-
quent thrusts of his cane. He wrote the
following epitaph on his little dog:

CAPTAIN JOSEPH MILLER 9

Bute, Who was Killed by the Wolves.

"Hard was the fate of little 'Bute'
With hungry wolves he did dispute,
Amid the strife of battles din
Received a grip beneath the chin.

Adieu, my brother of the dust,
Those savage whelps are doubly cursed,
With horrid screech and doleful yell,
I hear them howling now in hell."*
