PREFACE.

Those who receive this pamphlet are earnestly re-
quested to examine its statements carefully, and to send
me notice of all errors and omissions that may be dis-
covered therein. In so doing, particular attention should
be bestowed upon the dates. Probably a few errors will
be detected in these, notwithstanding my efforts. to make
them as correct as possible. It is hoped that sufficient
material may be received in this way to justify a reissue
of these pages in a fuller and more accurate form.

I desire to thank the few who have aided me in pre-
paring this genealogy, and to say to the many who have
not, that much of its incompleteness is due to their neg-
lect and want of courtesy. Imperfect as the work is,
it has cost me considerable time and labor — much more,
indeed, than will appear possible to those who merely
glance over its pages. No one regrets so much as myself
the meager results of my efforts to do for other people
what they will not do for themselves.

I have collected the material for two more volumes
on the Phoenix family, which will probably be printed

at no very distant day. They will enumerate the de-
scendants, so far as known to me, of Alexander Phcenix,
who settled in this city about 1640, and of John Phcenix,
an early settler in New Jersey. My original intention
of publishing an account of all branches of the family
in a single volume, has been abandoned.

GENEALOGY.

The materials for a biography of John Phoenix,
ancestor of those whose names are recorded on the fol-
lowing pages, are exceedingly scanty. Nothing is known
concerning his parentage, and even his nationality is a
matter of conjecture. There are good grounds, however,
for believing that he was of Scotch descent, and that he
emigrated from his native land in consequence of the
persecution to which the Kirk, of Scotland was subjected
in the reign of Charles II. The records of the Congre-
gational Church at Kittery bear witness to his worthy
and pious conduct in his new home ; and we may add
that in this respect his character has been very generally
inherited by his descendants.

The date of his birth has not been ascertained ; in all
probability it was not later than 1646, the year in which
his wife was born. The first mention of his name,
known to me, occurs in a deed dated 1664, in which
John Withers, of Kittery, conveys " unto John ffennicke
" a tract of land in Spruce Cricke Contayneing twelve
" acres joyneing to a necke of Land called pine poynt

PHCENIX FAMILY. 2

" For & in consideration of Tenn pound in

"hand payd." On the 21st of June, 1669, "ye Select
" men for Kittery with yc Consent and approbation of
"Thomas Withers" granted "unto John Amerideth
" and John ffenix " twenty-four acres of land near Eagle
Point; and on the 22d of January i6|~§- there is
" measured and layd out unto John ffeanix his town
" grant of twenty acres of land bearing Date Aug" 1 8,
" 1679, and his addition to his house lott Containing
" six acres." Over ten years after this, the 13th of
January, i6-||-, "Will Godson Surveighr for ye town of
" Kittery," " measured and Layd out unto John ffenix
" four acres and a half and six pole of Land in part of
" his addition to his home Lott." The name thus
variously spelled was, in reality, Fenwick. He himself
generally wrote it as it is properly pronounced, Fennick.
It has since passed through the successive forms of
Fennicks, Fennix, Fenix, and Phenix. The last, and
final change — to judge from the practice of other fam-
ilies of the same name — will probably be to convert the
e into the diphthong ce* Having attained this ancient
and classical form, it is to be hoped that the name will
cease from its wanderings and assume a permanent rest-
ing-place.

* In anticipation of this final change, and with a view to hasten it, I have spelled
the name in these pages, Phoenix — though, to the best of my knowledge, no one of
the present branch of the family has as yet adopted this form of the name

PHCENIX FAMILY.

In several deeds now lying before me, he is styled
" mariner." He could hardly have been a common
sailor, however, as he appears to have been possessed of
very considerable wealth, and of more than the average
education of his day. He could, at least, write his
name — as witness some bold and clerkly signatures in
my possession — and this was an accomplishment by no
means common among seafaring men two centuries ago.
It may, therefore, be reasonably conjectured that he was
the owner of a vessel engaged in " lumbering," or in the
fisheries — occupations which have afforded lucrative
employment to the inhabitants of Kittery from its
settlement, in 1623, to the present day.

He married Deborah , but in what year is

unknown. They were man and wife, however, as early
as 1 67 1, as appears from a deed signed by them con-
jointly on the 13th of March in that year. She must
have been born in 1646, as she speaks of herself, in a
deposition dated Nov. 17th, 17 16, as being " of about
Seventy year of age." In another deposition, bearing
the date of March 29th, 1732, she calls herself eighty-
six, and this is the last mention I have found of her. No
doubt she died soon afterward. There appears to be
no record of her husband's decease. We learn from a
deed executed on the 26th of May, 1721, that he was
living on that day ; but his name does not again appear
on the records, so far, at least, as they have come under

my observation. It may be reasonably inferred that his
death occurred soon after this date, and that he did not
long survive his seventy-fifth year.

Genealogists will not be surprised to hear that tradi-
tion makes him, as it does nearly every early settler in
New England, one of three brothers, who came to this
country together and settled in different parts of it — one
of them going to Maryland, and another still farther
South. By what Christian names these brothers were
distinguished, where they settled, whom they married,
what children they had, I have not been able to ascer-
tain, and my faith in their existence is very faint. There
is no evidence in my possession to connect the settler
of Kittery with Alexander Fenwick, or Phcenix, who
settled in New Amsterdam, now New York, about
1640, and who is believed by some of his descendants
(though probably on insufficient grounds) to have been
a younger son of Sir John Fenwick, of Northumberland,
England.

The Fenwicks of Northumberland were a fine old
border family of Saxon origin, who resided at Fenwick
Tower, in that county, from the reign of Henry I. to
that of William III. (1067-1697), when their estates
were forfeited by the rebellion of Sir John Fenwick,
Bart. They were long celebrated for their warlike pro-
pensities. Those who are familiar with border literature
will remember the lines,

PHCENIX FAMILY. 5

*' We saw, come marching ower the knows,

Fyve hundred Fennicks in a flock, —

With jack and speir, and bowis all bent,

And warlike weaponis at their will."

Ballad of the Raid of the Redsivire.

This clannish family bore a leading part in almost
every combat upon the border, and their gathering-cry,
"A Fenwyke ! a Fenwyke!! a Fenwyke !!!", was
never heard without a vast troop of retainers flocking
round their standard. The house of Percy found its
most constant adherents in the Fenwicks, and the silver
crescent of the former never appeared in border warfare
without the gorged Phcenix in the burning flame (the Fen-
wick crest) following in the rear. They were called
" The Fierce Fenwicks," from their family characteristic:
thus, at the Raid of the Redswire,

" Proud Wallinton was wounded sair,
Albeit he be a Fennick fierce."

The arms of the family, used as early as 1274, were
"per fesse gu. and arg. six martlets counterchanged."
Their crest was " a phcenix* in flames ppr. gorged with

* This is called in heraldry a canting crest. It serves to show that Fen-wick was
pronounced, at a very early day, as if written Phoenix. In the same way, Fenwicke
Creek, Salem county, New Jersey (named after John Fenwicke, an early settler in
that State), has been, I am informed, corrupted into Phcenix Creek, and is now known
to those who live in its neighborhood by the latter name only. A correspondent in
Liverpool, England, writes to me : " I have an old friend, named Fenwick, whom we,
at the Bar of the Northern Circuit, always called Phcenix." Lower adopts this ex-
planation of the name in his Patronymica Britannica.

PHCENIX FAMILY.

a mural crown." They had three mottoes. One, quoted
above, was their war-cry; the second, perit ut vivat, was
in allusion to the crest ; the third, a tous jours loyal, was
conferred by Henry V., in acknowledgment of the ser-
vices rendered him by Sir John de Fenwicke during his
French wars.

Scanty remains of Fenwick Tower, the family strong-
hold, are still to be seen one mile southwest of Stam-
fordham, Northumberland, on the edge of a small,
gloomy fen, which has given the family its name. They
are built into the walls of a modern farm-house. In
destroying part of the Tower in 1775, 226 gold nobles
of Edward III. and Richard II , and one of David II.,
were found buried in a stone chest, having probably been
concealed during an inroad of David of Scotland, in
1361, when he penetrated to Hexham, carrying off thence
the two sons of the then Sir John Fenwick, of Fenwick
Tower.

Whether the settler of Kittery was descended from
either of these sons thus carried into Scotland, or
whether his ancestors were simply retainers of this pow-
erful family, and adopted, as was common, the name of
those they served, it is now too late to determine. I
have no hopes of ever solving this problem; and, indeed,
admonished by the difficulties I have experienced in
constructing even the scanty record that follows, I have
no desire to attempt it.

PHCENIX FAMILY.

FIRST GENERATION.

1.  I.  John  P.,1  born  about   1644;    died  after    1721  ;

was living in Kittery* in 1664; married Deborah

(born 1646, died after 1732) before 1671,

and had three children [4-6].

2. II. A brother of the preceding; name unknown.

Supposed to have settled in Maryland. Existence
very doubtful. See 18.

3. III. Another brother ; name unknown. Supposed

to have settled south of Maryland. Existence very
doubtful. See 19.

SECOND GENERATION.

Issue of John* [i] and Deborah.

4. I. George P.,2 inherited the homestead at Spruce

Creek, Kittery ; married 21st July, 1709,")* Han-
nah Jones, and had nine children [7—15]. She was
baptized by John Newmarch, pastor of the Con-
gregational Church in the lower parish of Kittery,
13th Nov., 1715; recognized her baptismal cove-
nant and admitted into full communion, 25th Oct.,
1730. Date of her death unknown ; both were
living in 1747.

5. II. Elizabeth P.,1 married Hezekiah Elwell before

15th Jan., 1744.

* In this genealogy, when neither State nor county is mentioned, York County, in
Maine, must be understood. When the county is named, but not the State, Maine is
meant. In all other cases, both State and county are given.

-f- All dates prior to 1752 are given in the Julian, or old style. The double years
are indicated in the usual manner.

PHCENIX FAMILY. 8

6. III. Deborah P.,2 mentioned by her father in a
deed dated 5th Feb., 17-j-f, perhaps by mistake for
Elizabeth.

THIRD GENERATION.

Issue of George" [4] and Hannah.

7. I. Anne P.,3 born ist May, 1710, at Kittery ; bap-
tized 13th Nov., 17 1 5, by Rev. John Newmarch.
Probably died in childhood.

8.  II.  John  P.,3  born  26th  Feb.,  ij^h  at  Kittery;
baptized 13th Nov., 17 15, by Rev. John New-
march ; married Catharine Lewis, probably toward
the close of 1738 (their intentions of marriage hav-
ing been recorded on 116. Nov. of that year), and
had one child [16]. Both he and his wife signed
a deed, 18th April, 1786. It is not known when
they died.

9. III. Lockwood P.,3 born 25th March, 1714, at

Kittery; baptized 13th Nov., 17 15.

10. IV. Richard P.,3 born 17th Aug., 1716, at Kit-
tery; baptized 5th Aug., 17 16;* owned the cove-
nant of the Congregational Church- in the lower
parish of Kittery, 1st Nov., 1741 ; married Dorothy
Ball in 1737 (their intentions of marriage having
been recorded on 28th January of that year), and
had three children [17-19]. Married, secondly,

* The first of these dates was copied from the town records of Kittery, the second
from the register of baptisms in the Congregational Church. Of course, one of them
is incorrect; and as I find that the 5th of August, 171 6, O. S., was Sunday (on which
day the baptism was undoubtedly performed), I am inclined to believe that the error
is in the town record.

in the Straits of Belle Isle in 1775.

ships in 1782, and was buried on Staten Island.*
Never married.

21. II. William P.,5 born nth Dec, 1761, at Kit-

the covenant 19th April, 1789. There is no record
of her death ; but we find her living as late
as 3d Oct., 1824.

22. III. Richard P.,s born nth March, 1764, at Kit-

jamin Stevens. Died at Alfred, 14th Aug., 1859.
Married at Kittery, 3d Nov., 1791, Ruth, daughter
of Samuel and Eleanor (Brooks) Wilson, and had
seven children [28-34]. She was born 3d May,

* More probably on the shores of the Wallabout.

PHCENIX FAMILY. II

1768, and died at Alfred, 8th Aug., 18 10. He

* Abigail Furniss and William Furnex are evidently sister and brother, and the chil-
dren of Abigail Furniss, who was the daughter of David Phippen. Probably the earlier
orthography of the name is correct, though it must be owned that Furnex has consid-
erable resemblance in sound to Phenix, and may be the same name. Savage mentions
a Benjamin Fernis as living at Salem in 1640, and adds, with great improbability, that
the name is possibly a corruption of Ferris. Nathaniel Fearnux, of Lexington, who
was killed in the action of April 19th, 1775, with the British troops (see Mass. Hist.
Soc. Coll., 2nd Series, vm., 45), was perhaps a member of the same family, though
this name is a still nearer approach to Phcenix.
