The volume is fundamentally a diary, although it contains other types of entries such as sermon notes and a list of gifts presented to the Dailys. He begins by telling why he is starting the diary and then reviews his life from 1843 when he was licenced to preach at the Quarterly Conference of Marion Circuit, Holston Conference, Wytheville District. His entries describe the hardships and rewards of his life as a minister, the intense interest in religion among the people, and the successes of his preaching. He often mentions his family, attending conferences, his impressions of bishops at conferences, the hospitality he experiences during his travels, and various other things, including his feelings about ministers of other denominations whom he encounters
Methodist preacher originally from Virginia. He travelled 18 years as a minister in the western sections of Virginia and North Carolina and the eastern sections of Tennessee
