"Voyage"

Three hundred and fifty two years ago, the Dove
ended its fateful journey on the shores of what later came to be called the Chesapeake Bay, The Dove was originally
accompanied by a sister ship, the Ark, But the Ark was lost in a storm and never seen again. The people on board
the Dove gave up everything they knew, everything that was familiar to them, so that they could discover a new
world and start a new life. Once here, the settlers had to work harder and be more responsible than at any other
time in their lives, some did not survive the hardships.

Almost three hundred and fifty two years later, we as students of Saint Mary's College, start our voyage where the
settlers ended theirs. Our voyage is slightly different, but a voyage no less. We undertake our voyage here, not with
the potential to discover just one new world, but with the potential to discover many new worlds. Some of those who
start their journey here will not complete it, most may not be able to bear the hardships of this voyage. There will
always be a few, though, who can and will bear the strain, taking the laughter when they can get it, and eventually
discovering a new world where they can live and grow.

This vessel which you hold before you is also called The Dove. It carries more than just people, though, it also
:arries places and times. It captures the memories of the hopes and dreams we carry with us during our voyage to a
new world. Read on and remember, this voyage will never end.

GRADUATION

LIKE AN ADVENTUROUS SEA

FARER AM I

Like an adventurous Sea-farer am I,

Who hath some long and dang'rous Voyage beene,

And calld to tell of his Discovery,

How farre he sayld, what Countires he had seene:

Proceeding from the port whence he put forth,

Shewes by his Compasse how his Course he steer'd

When East, when West, when South and when by North,

As  how  the  Pole  to  ev'ry  place  was  rear'd;

What Capes he doubled, of what Continent,

The Bulphes and Straits that strangely he had past.

Where most becalm'd, where with foule Weather spent.

And on what Rockes in perill to b3e cast.

Thus in my LoveTime calls me t relate

My tedious Travells and oft-varying Fate.

EDITOR'S NOTE

Dear Friends,

My last official action as Editor-in-Chief of the 1987 DOVE is to type this message to all of
you. I have spent four years doing different kinds of work for Saint Mary's College of
Maryland, yet none of my other projects have required as much sweat, worry, and running
around as this project.

I have many people whom I need to thank for their assistance. Thank you Chris Cihlar for
your patience and work in delivering pictures to the yearbook. Thank you Joyce Cliff-Romano
for all the extra work you did for the yearbook at the end of the year. I must also thank the
yearbook representative from Josten's, John Beach. Without John Beach's assistance and
organization I doubt this yearbook would have ever reached print.

I think it is appropriate to dedicate this yearbook to all of you. Those of you have sweated at
St. Mary's and who appreciate the value of memories. We must all thank the staff of the DOVE
for their work and dedication in spite of the fact that many of the staff were new to yearbook
work. Also, we the staff thank all the students who contributed their precious pictures to us.

Thank you,
David Paul Flanagan
Editor-in-Chief
THE DOVE
