TO THE CLASS OF 1995:

WELCOME TO DUKE! You are beginning four of the most important years
of your lives — years that will affect everything you do from now on — years
that you will never forget.

Your "Duke Experience" is beginning, but as important as these next four
years will be, they are only the beginning. Duke will provide you with
friends, memories, and shared experiences that will draw you back to campus
or to alumni activities again and again.

Take advantage of every opportunity you have while at Duke. You will
never regret it. And when you graduate, plan to continue the Duke
Experience through alumni clubs, education, reunions and other activities.
You will find that you have much in common with alumni of all ages and
will be enriched by the continuing experience.

So welcome to Duke — the experience of a lifetime.

James R. Ladd '64
President, Duke Alumni Association

TO THE CLASS OF 1995:

3'

On behalf of more than 83,000 active Duke alumni, I welcome you to Duke
University and extend best wishes for a productive and enjoyable Duke
experience.

This class directory is published by the Duke Alumni Association. Please use
it as a resource for getting acquainted with a wonderfully interesting and
diverse group of individuals — your classmates.

During your student days and afterwards, the Duke Alumni Association will
encourage you to take part in many activities, ranging from career counseling
and reunions to meetings of local alumni clubs — all part of the Duke
network. By becoming involved, you'll receive many educational and social
rewards. While you are at Duke, we will also encourage your parents to take
advantage of social, educational, and travel opportunities offered by the
alumni association.

Alumni House is located at 614 Chapel Drive at the main entrance to West
Campus at Duke University Road. Please drop in for a visit. From this point
on, we consider you "alumni in residence."

Director of Alumni Affairs

Duke: Where excellence endures

Being a native Southerner, although
a reconstructed one, I have grown
during my more than twenty-five
years at Duke University to be keen-
ly interested in and attracted by a
special quality that I find in Duke's
history and in the University today.
It is not easy, especially for a long-
winded professorial type, to explain
in a few words. But it has to do with
the fact that Duke is where it is — in
North Carolina and the South — and
the kind of institution that Duke has
been and is.

In the first place, North Carolina
has always been in some ways both a
quintessential southern state and, at

the same time an unsouthern south-
ern state. Let me mention a few of
the southern aspects first. The largest
social class in the South before the
Civil War, and for several decades
after it too, was made up of yeoman
farmers — men and women who
owned their modest acreage and
worked hard to make their liveli-
hoods from it. North Carolina, with
relatively few great plantations, was
the special home of the small farm-
ers. The individualism and self-reli-
ance that once characterized so much
of agrarian America lasted long in
North Carolina — and has not, in
fact, completely disappeared to this

day.

On the other hand, the Tar Heel
state has never fully conformed to
certain historic southern norms.
There has always been an attractive
element of other-mindedness about
North Carolina. There have been, for
example, more dissenters and excep-
tions-to-the-rule in North Carolina
than in either of her neighboring
states, Virginia and South Carolina.

Perhaps that other-mindedness
furnishes a clue as to why the trust-
ees of struggling little Trinity Col-
lege, our institutional forebear,
picked an audacious, innovative
Yankee, John F. Crowell, to become
president in 1887. That was a time
when so much of the South was still
mired in bitter memories of the Civil
War and sectional defensiveness, yet
Trinity dared to be different.

Trinity, in fact, aspired to excell-
ence. Now, aspirations toward excell-
ence are not uncommon among edu-
cational institutions. Practically all of
them mouth the words, sooner or
later. To dream of excellence and to
begin to have the money to pay the
inevitable cost of it, however, was an
experience known to precious few
colleges in the poverty-stricken
South of eighty or so years ago.

President Crowell and the newfan-
gled, young Ph.D.s he had to recruit
for the faculty when Trinity moved
to Durham in 1892 not only
dreamed of excellence. They found
patrons in Washington Duke and his
son, Benjamin N. Duke, who gradu-
ally began to pay the bills for it. The
momentum of the college increased
around the turn of the century. The
Dukes, rich Republicans in what was
then a veritable sea of southern
Democrats, preferred a broad nation-
al outlook to a sullen sectional one.
North Carolina could tolerate such
an institution as Trinity even if
many in the state did not exactly
love it, and many, especially Metho-
dists, did love and try to support it.
Money from the Duke family al-
lowed Trinity College to enjoy an in-
dependence and critical stance that
few other southern educational estab-
lishments in the first decades of this
century could match.

When James B. Duke, Washington
Duke's youngest son, prepared to un-
derwrite the organization of a uni-
versity around Trinity in 1924, the
college was ready. An interesting col-

lege with a distinctive style and his-
tory became, rather gracefully and
naturally, a university that still
strives toward excellence — and still
struggles to pay the mounting costs
of it.

So Duke University, like North
Carolina, is both southern and un-
southern. On the wooded edge of a
medium-sized industrial city, Duke
is also on the edge of its own forest
of some eight thousand acres. As a
faculty member myself, I must leave
it to others to speak about that com-
ponent of today's university. But I
will arbitrarily select a few of Duke's
continuing, special attractions for
me. As universities go, we are, thank
God, still small, and all the evidence
suggests that we will remain so. We
have a cosmopolitan student body
with whom, most of the time at least,
it is both pleasant and challenging to
engage in the learning process. Duke
has one of the finest libraries in the
country, not just in terms of the size
of its holdings and the handsomeness

of its facilities but in the friendly
helpfulness of its dedicated staff.
Five minutes from my office on
West Campus, I can be in Sarah P.
Duke Gardens and the peaceful
woods around them — and I go there
on most working days, in fact on the
way to work. From different spots in
those gardens, one can see the Goth-
ic towers of West Campus. The stone
is warmly colored and from a nearby
hillside and, as Woodrow Wilson put
it, we have put "those lines in our ar-
chitecture which point every man's
imagination to historic traditions of
learning in the English-speaking
race." For those reasons as well as
the sheer beauty of the buildings, I
enjoy living with the Tudor-Gothic
style of West. On East Campus,
where I liked being officed for more
than twenty years in one of the too
few buildings that remain from Trin-
ity days, both the spacious grounds
with their magnificent trees and the
red-brick Georgian architecture are
balms for anyone who will take the

55?-

time to note his or her surroundings.
Trinity and Duke were here long
before any of us now in residence
came on the scene. They will be here
long hence. That fact, in itself, is one
of the enduring satisfactions to be
derived from being a part of an insti-
tution like Duke.

Everything you always wanted to know

Now that you're a true Blue Devil, you'll want to sound like one, too.
Learn to talk like an upperclassman with this handy list of acronyms,
terms, and phrases that, even if they are used in the real world, take on
an especially sweet or random meaning in the Gothic Wonderland. Con-
fused already? Read on . . .

ADVICE — Your academic advisor will give it by appointment only.
Your R.A. will give it in the dorm. Upperclassmen will give it over pizza
on a bench. Weigh it all carefully — some sources are better than others.

ALCOHOL(not of the rubbing variety) — In North Carolina, you must be
21 or older to possess, consume, or purchase liquor, beer, or wine.

ALUMNI LOUNGE— Located in the West Union Building between the
U Room and the C.I., it's THE place to meet up with friends or a scope
for a meal or snack.

ing events without using The Chronicle. The buses pass underneath and
the graffiti changes daily.

BRYAN UNIVERSITY CENTER— It's the hub of West Campus activ-
ity. Call it the Bryan Center, but don't shorten the name to "the B.C.," a
common frosh mistake. Be it movies or mail, milkshakes or meetings,
you'll find it here.

BUSES — A great place to catch up on the latest gossip, some last minute
reading, or sleep. Buses run between East and West and through North
and Central and are usually very reliable.

CABLE 13 — A student-run cable channel with a brand-new studio, it's
available on any commons room TV. Features such Duke favorites as
"The Mating Game." "Your Favorite Drinking Game," "Inside Duke,"
"Bull Session," and "The Coach K Show."

ASDU — Pronounced "as-doo", it stands for Associated Students of Duke
University, the official student government. ASDU has two bodies: a leg-
islature, composed of at least one representative per dormitory, and an
executive committee, composed of representatives chosen by the stu-
dents in general election and executives appointed by the president.
When it's working properly, the ASDU makes policy recommendations
to the administration and chooses all student members on university
committees.

BASKETBALL — Say it with respect . . . this is THE sport at Duke, the
main topic of conversation from November through March, and (let's be
honest) possibly one of the main reasons we all chose Duke over other
schools. We're famous for our crazed fans, creatively obnoxious
cheers — the most ardent fans camp out in line for games, paint their
faces Duke blue and white, wear horns, and want to change the school
motto to "Eruditio et Basketballio".

BEACH — Where Dukies escape to for fall, Christmas, and spring breaks.
Myrtle Beach, S.C. (affectionately known as "myrtle") is the traditional
post-finals/pre-graduation retreat.

BENCHES — Fun to paint, even more fun to burn in the traditional
post-incredible-basketball-victory bonfires. See SCOPING.

BLUE DEVIL'S ADVOCATES— You've met some already if you took
a campus tour. This student-run service operates out of the Admissions
Office and includes tour guides and the Visitors Program. Proud Dukies
volunteer to show off their school to visitors and prospectives.

BRIDGE — A Duke landmark, located just off East Campus on Campus
Drive. It's the best way to send personal messages or announce upcom-

CAMBRIDGE INN— Called the C.I., it's the West Campus hot spot, lo-
cated next to the Alumni Lounge and featuring beer on tap, made-to-
order sandwiches, C.I. pizza, drinks, frozen yogurt, and a long line. See
SCOPING.

CAPS — Stands for Counseling and Psychological Services, a confidential
service that helps students solve their problems, personal and profession-
al, and provides educational seminars.

CENTRAL CAMPUS — Part of regular university housing, it's made up
of apartments and located in between East and West Campuses. If you're
not one for dorm life, this is the place to live.

CENTRAL CAMPUS POOL— A great outdoor swimming pool, com-
plete with lounge chairs, and a popular spot in good weather.

CHAPEL HILL — A 20-minute drive from Duke, it's where some of the
best restaurants and bars in the area are located. Also home of another
North Carolina university, but not THE university of North Carolina.

CHRONICLE, THE — Duke's award-winning, five-day-a-week newspa-
per and one of the first things a Dukie picks up each morning. The com-
ics, personals, and crossword puzzle provide lunchtime entertainment.
Editors are elected by the staff, but anyone can write.

CLUSTERS — Where freshpeople will find themselves living and the per-
fect place to make close friends. Also may refer to clusters of Apple
Mcintosh computers found in Perkins Library on West and Carr build-
ing on East.

CRIPS — Easy courses, but of course that's a relative term at Duke. Up-

perclassmen will gladly share their lists of crips, but professors have been
known to change the requirements. The most famous nicknames: "Rocks
for Jocks," "Stars," "Guns and Boats," "Physics for Poets," and any
name followed by "and Society."

DOWNUNDER — Located underneath Gilbert-Addoms dormitory, the
D.U. houses offices for many student activities and an occasional con-
cert.

DROP/ADD — The world's longest line, rivaling even the line for the an-
nual home basketball game against Carolina. It's held the second day of
class each semester from 4 to 6 p.m. If you get a permission note from
the professor of the course you want to add, you guarantee admission
and avoid the line.

DUKE CARD — Don't leave home without it. Seriously. With both your
food plan and flexible spending account (see FLEX) on it, this little card
can get you just about anything and anywhere on campus. Don't lend
it — that's against the judicial code.

DURHAM — Rhymes with "germ," but it's actually a nice place to live.
Home of the Durham Bulls minor league baseball team featured in the
movie "Bull Durham."

EGG DROP — A popular fall event in which engineering students drop
eggs off a building in devices designed to prevent breakage. The best egg
wins. See ENGINEERING.

ENGINEERING — A major for some 200 members of your class, whom
you'll see rarely because of five-hour lab classes. Contrary to popular be-
lief, not all engineers wear calculators on their belts or converse only
with computers.

ESCORT SERVICE— After 2 a.m. call Public Safety at 684-2444 for an
escort; before 2, call Saferides or Safewalks. Either way, don't go alone.

FAC — Stands for Freshman Advisory Counselor, a kindhearted upper-
classman who has volunteered to help you and about eight other frosh
get moved in, settled down, and smoothly through your first year at
Duke. See ADVICE.

FLEX — Stands for flexible spending account — you deposit money and
the points are kept on your Duke card. Can buy you all the necessities of
life such as beer, food, deodorant ... oh yeah, and books.

GARDENS — The best on-campus escape. Just a few steps from the main
quad, the Sarah P. Duke Gardens have lots of nooks, crannies, and open

spaces for playing, studying, or pondering the meaning of life.

GEEKS — Also known as dweebs, these are persons who live in the li-
brary or wish they could.

GOTHIC BOOKSTORE— A great place to kill time and pick up some
quality literature while you're at it. Located in the Bryan Center, the
Gothic has a wide range of enjoyable reading, and what it doesn't have,
the salespeople will order for you.

GOTHIC WONDERLAND — A more common name for Duke's pictur-
esque campus; your last refuge before the Real World.

GRADES — Important, but not worth worrying about as much as you
might think. Keep in mind: Mid-term grades are usually lower than final
grades, and your grades tend to get higher as you get older.

GREEKS — Approximately forty percent of undergraduate men and thir-
ty-five percent of undergraduate women. Mother's advice: Try rush and
then decide what is best for you.

HIDEAWAY BAR — The evening and late-night hangout that has beer
on tap, a television, video games, a pool table, and an outdoor patio.
Hidden away under the Pits, if you can find it. If you're 21 or older you
can slideaway to the Hideaway. See ALCOHOL.

IFC — The Interfraternity Council coordinates and watches over Duke's
21 recognized fraternities.

INDEPENDENTS — Those who aren't greeks, namely sixty-five percent
of women and sixty percent of men. Some chose not to rush, while oth-
ers didn't receive bids to the fraternity or sorority of their choice. Inde-
pendence is not a social handicap by any means.

INTRAMURALS — Athletics for non-athletes. A number of sports are
played year-round. The PE department can give you more information.

JAMES BUCHANAN DUKE— The man who watches over West Cam-
pus in front of the chapel. This statuesque figure sports different cos-
tumes on occasion and sometimes finds himself holding an empty beer
can on Monday morning.

JUDICIAL BOARD— Often shortened to "Judy-board," this student-fa-
culty-administrative board tries cases ranging from academic dishonesty
to assault. Student "attorneys" are provided for defendants free of
charge.

KEGS— Parties, especially those sponsored by fraternities, named after
kegs of beer on tap. By a new university alcohol policy, kegs are limited
to Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. See ALCOHOL.

LIBRARY — Duke has several of them, and chances are you'll get to
know them well. The two main libraries are Perkins on West and the
East Campus Library. For serious studying, go to the ECL or Perkins
stacks; for social studying, try the Gothic or Deryl Hart reading rooms in
Perkins. See SOCIAL LIFE and SCOPING

LICKS — Located in the RAT, downstairs in the Bryan Center, Licks fea-
tures Steve's ice cream, frozen yogurt, sodas, beer, coffee, and cappucino.
Easily recognized with its pseudo-Rolling Stones logo and long line.

LINES — You can't go far at Duke without seeing one. Waiting for food,
check-cashing, basketball games, concert tickets, QuadFlix and Freewater
films are all popular pastimes.

LOBBY SHOP — Airport-style store on the upper level of the Bryan Cen-
ter, featuring groceries, snacks, sodas, toiletries, and the latest magazines
and newspapers.

MASH — What your parents called "making out" — Duke style. Often
done at or after kegs.

PANHEL — The Panhellenic Council, the sororities' equivalent to the
IFC, oversees the rush process and other activities of Duke's thirteen sor-
orities.

PICAD — Stands for Peer Information and Counseling on Alcohol and
Drugs. Students trained to answer your questions about alcohol and oth-
er drugs.

PISCES — Peer counselors trained to answer your questions about sexual
issues ranging from birth control to date rape to social diseases. Always
confidential.

PITS — Technically called the Blue and White Room, it's the all-you-can-
eat dining hall on West Campus. Greeks of both sexes often meet here to
eat together. See SCOPING.

POINTS — The equivalent of your parents' wallets at Duke, these are
units of exchange for your flex and food plans. Points worth one cent
each are electronically tallied on your Duke card. Once again — don't loan
your card to friends or, worse yet, lose it — points thieves abound.

PRE-MAJOR ADVISOR— Knowledgeable givers of curricular wisdom,
located in the Pre-Major Advisory Center on East Campus. See them by
appointment only to plan your schedules and get classes approved. See
ADVICE.

PROFESSORS— Called the Dr. or Professor So-and-So. Assistant
professors do not have tenure, while associate and full professors do.
Duke's are amazing, with very few exceptions.

QUAD DOGS — Four-legged friends who are always ready to join in a
game of frisbee.

QUAD FLIX — First-run films the second time around, shown regularly
in the Bryan Center film theater.

QUAD SQUIRRELS— Duke, especially West Campus, is home to prob-
ably the tamest squirrels you'll ever meet. Fun to feed or watch, and
several have been known to find their way into dorm rooms.

QUIET — A phenomenon found occasionally on East, rarely on West,
and NEVER in frosh dorms.

PAGE BOX OFFICE— Where to buy tickets for events ranging from
rock concerts to symphony to Broadway at Duke. If you're into standing
in line, it's just the ticket.

RANDOM — Term found in about every third sentence uttered at Duke.
"Random" can have a literal sense, as in randomly running into
someone or a random mash, but also can describe any unknown, inexpli-
cable, or disliked person or thing, as in, "some random stole my econ
notes."

RATHSKELLAR— Called "the Rat," if not something worse, this res-
taurant is located downstairs in the Bryan Center and features such Duke
favorites as Ratburgers, pasta. Mexican dishes, fried foods, and bever-
ages.

REAL WORLD — Life after the Gothic Wonderland and a scary place
— just ask any senior. It includes navy blue suits, nine-to-five jobs, one-
week vacations, and, for the vast majority of Duke alumni, a great deal
of success.

RIDE-RIDER BOARD— A wooden replica of the U.S. located down-
stairs in the Bryan Center to help students find rides or passengers for
upcoming vacations or weekend getaways.

SAFERIDES/SAFEWALKS— Services run by student volunteers who
want to make sure that you get back to your dorm safely after dark. Use
them — they're there for your protection.

SCOPING — The main term for scrutinizing a member of the opposite
sex. Favorite scoping spots are benches, the C.I., the Pits, and the Gothic
and Deryl Hart reading rooms in Perkins. Successful scoping results in
asking or getting asked to lunch, dinner, or kegs . . . and who knows
where it might end.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES OFFICE— Found in the Bryan Center, it's the
place to find out about the approximately 300 clubs and organizations on
campus. It provides resources such as advice in planning events, infor-
mation about university policies, phones, typewriters, and work space.

STUDENT HEALTH— Located in Pickens Building on North Campus;
not to be confused with the infirmary located in the yellow zone of Duke
Hospital South. Your fees are pre-paid by your parents, and you can see
a doctor or nurse by appointment for colds, flu, or any other complaints.

THE PUB — Central Campus' answer to off-campus eating, it offers a
variety of sandwiches, beer for those 21 or older, and entertainment by
local musicians.

U ROOM — Short for the University Room, it's a cafeteria next to the
Alumni Lounge, featuring breakfast and a salad bar, hot food, and drinks
for lunch and dinner. Its outdoor porch next to the Bryan Center walk-
way is a popular scoping spot on a sunny day.

UNCLE HARRY'S — The Central Campus convenience store that oper-
ates on food and flex points, located next to the Pub and swimming pool
off Yearby Street.

UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION— Otherwise known as the Allen
Building Gang; you'll probably get to know one or more of them during
your stay at Duke. The gang includes Dr. H. Keith H. Brodie, President;
Philip Griffiths, Provost, responsible for academics; Richard White,

Dean of Arts and Sciences; Earl Dowell, Dean of the School of Engineer-
ing; Richard Cox. Dean for Residential Life; Albert F. Eldridge, Univer-
sity Registrar; Sue Wasiolek, Dean for Student Life; Paul Bumbalough,
Assistant Dean for Student Life; and Caroline Lattimore, Dean of Minor-
ity Affairs.

UNIVERSITY UNION— Sponsors Major Attractions, Major Speakers,
Special Events, Freewater Films, Performing Arts. Cable Television, and
other committees essential to student life. Anyone can work for them
and have much fun doing it.

VARSITY SPORTS— Men's basketball may be king, but football follows
close behind. Plus, a number of non-revenue sports are worth watching
— check out soccer, ice hockey, gymnastics, field hockey, swimming, or
track.

WARM WEATHER — Why some people come to Duke, and an advan-
tage Harvard and the other Dukes of the North will never have over us.

WHAT'S UP? — The proper way to greet a friend, classmate, or scope in
passing. If someone greets you this way, the correct response, no matter
how busy or stressed out you really are, is, "Not much. How 'bout you?"

WOMEN'S HANDBOOK— A free guide for Duke women answering
questions and dealing with issues pertaining especially to women. Check
it out no matter which sex you are — you'll definitely learn something.

WXDU — At 88.7 and 90.7 on your FM dial, it's the student-run source
of new music, jazz, reggae, and the latest sports and news updates. New
DJ's and news announcers are chosen and trained each fall.

XEROX — A machine you will learn to love. You can buy an operator's
card at the Duke Store in the Bryan Center, the East Campus Dope Shop,
Perkins Library, Physics Library, and Office Products, or just use your
Flex points.

YEARBOOK AND OTHER PUBLICATIONS— The Chanticleer,
Duke's sometimes non-traditional yearbook, always features amazing
photography and a sentimental look at the past academic year. Other
publications include a literary and photographic magazine, a humor mag-
azine, a general magazine and the Teacher-Course Evaluation Book.

ZZZZZZ's — The fine art of studying the inside of one's eyelids, prac-
ticed extensively in early classes and in Perkins during exams. A student
can never get enough ZZZ's.
