INTRODUCTION
VVe, the l7^3cklenburg County jaughters of the
American Revolution Chapters, Alexaniriana, Gen.
Robert Irv/in and Jane Parks McOovvell, have listed
herein namec of people buried in family plots and
former church cemeteries, many of v;hom we be-
lieve to have been hitherto unlisted. V/e present
this booklet with the sincere wish chat it will a-
waken an interest in old cemeteries, and especially
in their care and restoration. It is appalling to
see the broken and fallen stones and mil^apt con-
dition of son^ie of these old gravec cf tne people who
helped In the founding of Mecklenburg County/.
It is our desire to reset these fallen stones
and give to tliese graves the care tliey deserve .

DINKINS CEMETERY
This cemetery is nine miles south of Charlotte on
Nations Ford Road, to the right of highway before
reaching the dwelling to Dinkins farm. This was a
stage coach stop from Camden to Salisbury.
V/ithin this cemetery are tv/enty headstones with in-
scriptions mdicating names, births and deaths of the de-
ceased. There are m.any rocks placed as to mark a grave
some stones are so placed to be that of a child, others of
an adult. These field stone markers have no inscriptions.
At one time this cemetery was probably enclosed by a
rock wall .

SPRATT CEMETERY
The Spratt Cemetery was on Spratt land some 400 yards
back of the Spratt home at what is now the comer of Fourth
and Casv/ell Road.
Tradition is that the cemetery was destroyed when Vail
Avenue was opened for traffic. The stones were thrown
into a gully and covered with 15 feet of dirt. When the
nurses home for Mercy Hospital was being built and exca-
vating done for the basement four of these stones were
found. Tiie hospital gave the stones to the city council. Mr.
Victor Shaw was mayor and with his consent of the council,
the four stones were placed in a concrete base in the ceme-
tery behind the First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte .
They can be found to the left on the first walk as you enter
the iron ^ate .
29
Members of the Spratt family are thought to have been
buried in the Spratt cemetery but no such stones were found.
