PREFACE
THIS compilation of tlie early records of births, mar-
riages and deaths, is designed only as a groundwork
of a larger volume, which we hope may be collated and
published by some one or more of the members of our
numerous family. The undersigned has for thirty years
spent much time in transcribing the records of two or
three of the first generations of the name of Dodge in this
country, which are mostly to be found in Essex Co., Mass.,
and Block Island, R. L, where our first ancestors settled.
It is presumed the names found may be connected with
the present generation of nearly all now living ; that is,
where those who know who were their grandfathers and
great-grandfathers, &c.
The question has often been asked. Can you connect
my line of descent with the first ancestors f It is hoped
the publication of these records may, in some measure,
aid in answering this inquiry.

FROM FARMER'S GENEALOGICAL REGISTER.
DoDCR, George, Concord 1G45, Shattuck, John, b. in 1036,
was an inhabitant of Beverlj' in 1G6G, and appears to have been
representative of Rowley in KM.— See Cull. N. H. Hist. Soc'tj,
II., 222-2.'6. — Ricliard of Salem was received to the churcli 5 of
May, 1G44, and was one of tlie Founders of the Cliurcli in
Beverly in 1GG7, where he probably lived.— William of Salem
was admitted Freeman in 1037, was one of the founders of the
Church in Beverly 1GG7. William, sou of the preceding, was of
Beverly, admitted Freeman in 1GS3, representative 2s"of May,
IG'JO. Daniel graduated at Harvard College iu 1700.

Tu the Herald's College a manuscript volume of the time of
Charles 2d has the Ibllowing entry:
DodgH or Dodget (Norfolk and Kent) Barry of G Arg aud Sa
on a Pale gules an eye weeping proper.
Dodge (Clieshire).
Barry of G Or aud Sa on a Pale gules, a woman's dug distilling
milk proper.
The above is the only record or allusion to the weeping eye,
" and it is supposed to have arisen from an ill done or deluctive
emblazonment, which has mistaken the breast for an eye."
In the College Books we find the Second Coat granted to
Peter Dodge of Siopworlh, Cheshire temp: Edward 1st, the
Ciest being a denii- sea-lion. These arms are repeated in three
diflerent MS. Volumes in the College Library, one in pen aud
ink and twice in colors; with one is a notice of Three Gen-
erations of Dodges ; with another where the arms of Houghton
anil Dodge are in juxtaposition is a record of the Marriage of
John Houghton, Alderman and Sheriff of London, to one of the
Dodges.

"He Beareth Barry of Six pieces. Or and Sable; overall a
Pale Gules, charged with a Woman's Dug distilling Drops of
Milk. Proper by the name of Dodge."
And hero because I find in the Oitice Arms a Copy of the first
Grant of this Coat Armour and that very ancient, I think it
convenient to acquaint the Keader with some particulars of the
same PATEXT as I there find it, whereby appeareth that James
Hedingley, then Guyon King of Arms, after recital made of the
loyal and valiant service which Peter Dodge born in the Town
of Srorwourii, in the County of Chester, Gentleman, had
done to King Edward the First, for as it there appeareth by the
Copy of this Instrument bearing date the 8th day of April, in
the 34tli year of that King's Keign, in diverse battles and sieges
for which the said King had renumerated him, the said Peter
Dodge, with the gift of a Seignory, or Lordship there mentioned.
He (I say) the said King of Anns, after such recital made, doth
Give and Grant unto the said Peter Dodge that from thenceforth
II (understand the said Peter) porterasen ecu d'or et Sables barre
de Six pieces, et uiuj pale de Gules avec une niammelle de femme
aegoullant, so are the very words and their Orthography in the
Copy of the Patent, which is in French. Thus much whereof I
thought fit to present to the public view, not doubting but the
judicious Header by careful observation thereof may make some
good u.se.
