TO OUR HELMSMAN

Who has shown us all how a true
Viking battles personal adversity.
Dr. Marion D. Thorpe, we love you
this one's for you.

A DAY IN THE CLASSROOM

Dr. Marlon D. Thorpe
Chancellor

BECOME AN ALUMNUS

NOW

Elizabeth City State University has made a number of great strides in the last few years — evidence of
dedication to the motto of "Excellence without Excuse" on the part of many people. Much of this is
attributable to you — as students and alumni.

Let me now ask a very serious question for your consideration. What could conceivably happen to your
school and its programs if you were to become an active alumnus — now? (You can become actively
involved as a member of the Pre-Alumnl Club.) As you ponder that question allow me to share with you
some of the things that I see.

First, the roles of various alumni chapters would begin to swell and the important work of the
association will be lightened because more people will be sharing that responsibility. Secondly, the
concept of regionalization, which is being promoted by the General Alumni Association, will take on new
meaning and really accelerate. This act alone could mean more students which means so very much to the
continued survival of "Dear Ole ECSU." Thirdly, as the involved alumni do their work and reach more and
more potential students we begin to realize new programs, new facilities, and an increased faculty and
staff, just to name a few things. The "ripple effect" of becoming an active alumnus now is very far-
reaching and this writing does not in any way exhaust the potential of such a major undertaking. One
additional benefit of becoming an alumnus now is that for the remainder of your stay here you will be able
to see some of the fruits of your labor.

Mrs. Thorpe and I would like to encourage those of you who are to return to enjoy the remainder of your
stay here. To those of you who are leaving, we hope that you have had a pleasant stay. May both groups
continue to make the very best of every situation. May you always enjoy success, happiness and good
health.

Sincerely,

fXj/jjd'^i^ iS^. ^^4^jjju^

Chancellor

CAMPUS HIGHLIGHTS

CAMPUS HIGHLIGHTS 1983

HONORS
CONVOCATION

Yes, during the Annual Honors Con-
vocation, over 300 students "received
their awards" for high academic
achievements and significant contri-
butions to the arts and sciences. The
awards ranged from cash and checks
to plaques and certificates. On hand to
address the occasion and join in salut-
ing the honorees was Dr. Joseph
Lowery, President, Southern Leader-
ship Conference (SCLC), who chal-
lenged the top achievers to "look
within yourselves and stir up the gifts
that are within you" in order to be able
to counteract the growing, new con-
servatism that threatens the quality of
life for millions of Americans.

FOUNDERS DAY

Founders Day, commemorating the
92nd Anniversary, was a busy day for
Chancellor Marlon D. Thorpe, whose
remarks, "Of Faith and Hope Contin-
ued," will long be remembered. In ad-
dition to addressing the Founders Day
Convocation, recognizing four out-
standing alumni, presiding over the
dedication of four new campus facili-
ties, and leading the Pilgrimage to
Oak Grove Cemetery where wreaths
were placed on the graves of the
Founders, Dr. Thorpe is interviewed,
at length, by WGAI Radio's News Di-
rector Charles White and WITN — TV
Reporter, Brian Williams (right).

CLUSTERING

With Business — Industry — Government

The ECSU Cluster Program held its
Second Annual Corporate Banquet on
Friday, February 4, 1983. In just two
years, this business and industry din-
ner has developed into the most gala
affair of its kind on the University
campus.

It's main purpose is that of fund rais-
ing to support the newly established
"Cluster Blue Chip Scholarship Pro-
gram." Secondarily, the Cluster busi-
ness and industry membership is ex-
pected to increase due to the exposure
derived from the banquet and the cali-
ber of speakers brought in to give the
keynote address.

The National

Alliance of

Business

This year's speaker. Governor James B. Hunt, Jr., ad-
dressed some 300 people who attended the banquet.

REFLECTIONS

OF THE PAST

"Mary" refused to have her picture
taken in time for use because she
didn't like her hair style; the professor
Just didn't like posing for a picture, so
he had to be captured with a "Candid
Camera," or, in some Instances, sup-
plies ran out or, once the darkroom
became well stocked, staff problems
arose, compounding the production
schedule. For whatever reasons, it Is
impossible for any one Edition of The
Yearbook to capture all of the events
and personalities that helped make
the year "one to remember."

Therefore, through a series of un-
identified pictures, "The Viking" pro-
vides this unique moment for reflec-
tion. Hopefully you remember the mo-
ments, the faces and the places. Those
who still remember will, perhaps, be
more than glad to share their exper-
iences with you. After having taken
the time to reflect, may the world find
us still smiling, aspiring, expanding,
committed, and achieving!

IN MEMORY OF
MARION D. THORPE

Dr. Marion Dennis Thorpe became President of Elizabeth City State College on July 1, 1968 and
subsequently, on July 1, 1972, became Chancellor of Elizabeth City State University.

Dr. Thorpe as President and Chancellor experienced a myriad of the challenges of American
higher education during his incumbency and met these challenges with unmatched distinction,
greater creativity and enlightment, and with unwavering dedication.

At so young an age. Dr. Marion D. Thorpe accomplished much. With love, sadness and inspiration
... he will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

From the office of the Vice Chancellor

As one may have leafed through this Annual of our great University it is hoped that a clear essence of
the occurrences, people and other events arc aptly depicted in each instance. Viklngland is full of
wondrous beings in the pursuit of academic excellence entwined with episodes of enjoyment so that the
two reflect a reasonable combination resulting in as much harmony as humanly possible.

We hope we have depicted those faces, places and events in such a way as to bring a ray of sunshine to
those of you who have experienced these events. We trust your remembrances are fond ones and that, for
you, they will engender a sense of loyalty to your Alma Mater. To those who do not know of our University
we hope this Annual will inspire you to visit, yea study with us as you reach for your endeavors in life.

Many thanks to those who have labored tirelessly in their efforts in the production of this Annual. 1 am
sure that what you've produced here will serve as a lesson learned to others as they seek to accomplish
similar goals.

Sincerely,

Dr. Harry J. Ghee
