I.— ENGLISH-ESPERANTO.
The words contained in this vocabulary are quite
sufficient for all ordinary purposes. I wish, however,
to give the reader a few hints regarding the marnier
of using, in the event of his requiring any word not
foimd in it.
1st. The word you look for may be perhaps a word
common to most countries. For instance, you will
not find such universal words as microphone, tele-
phone, etc. In this case refer to the section on
" Foreign words," and you will have no difficulty in
forming such words for yourself.
2nd. The word you may want is perhaps a
synonym, and this synonymous word you will, in all
likelihood, find in the vocabulary. For instance, you
may be looking for the verb " to seize " ; if you cannot
find it, look for the verb " to catch," etc.
3rd. Also if you want to find the w^ord " short,"
look for its opposite " long " and prefix " Mai," and
then you have it. The same way with scores, nay
hundreds of other words. Hence it is well to have a
good i6W/(:i/i^ knowledge of the prefixes and affixes.
A thorough acquaintance with these will place almost
every possible word within your reach. With a
much briefer vocabulary than the one before you, I,
by adopting these few rules, read everything I came
across in Esperanto, and wrote all my correspondence
with a large number of Esperantists.
4th; The words marked with an asterisk are
invariable; the other words form different parts of
speech by changing final letter, as Ami, to love
(verb) ; Amo, love (noun) ; Ame^ lovingly (adverb) i
Amat loving (adjective).

Count. Tolst.o5
"I found 'Volapuk' very complicated, while ES-
PERANTO on the contrary, is very simple. It is
so easy to learn that recently having received a
grammar, a dictionary, and several articles in that
idiom, I was able at the end of tzvo short hours to
easily read the language and even to write some of
it. The trouble involved in a few hours' study is so
slight, and the results may prove so great that no
one should refuse to make the attempt."
London Sp enactor
"It is remarkably easy to learn, owing to its ir-
reducible minimum of grammar and its extreme
simplicity of vocabulary. As far as we have ex-
amined it, we see no reason why this really simple
and scientific language should not afford to the
tourist and the merchant exactly what they need
for communication with foreigners."
AtAantAc MontMy
"The writer is not an Esperantist; he does not
speak the new idiom; he has never tried to, but
having heard of ESPERANTO, he decided to
write for it. One Sunday afternoon (for play not
for work) at about three o'clock he began to study,
at four o'clock he could read without too much
trouble, in the evening he wrote a letter of thanks
for it in ESPERANTO. He feels perfectly sure
that anybody could do as well, perhaps much bet-
ter."

'■'A great improvement on Volapuk which was preposterous
from begi7ining to end. Volapuk was not a simple language, and
simplicity is the one thing required in an international language''

** f T will bring to the reader a startling sense of the feasibility of
I universal language. Especially in France ESPERANTO has
been taken up seriously. Americans will not be slow in
catching up with the procession. Esperanto is a miracle of
simplicity. Almost any day, speaking loosely or figuratively, it
;nay dawn upon the consciousness of the business world as a revel-
ation. Grammars have never before been found among the six
best sellers, but it is not unreasonable to predict for Mr. O'Connor's
booklet a considerable sale. It is even conceivable that Esperanto
should ride into world success 6n the tide of an Anglo-American
