'fiiis Vocabulary was begun as an Index to 'Swabili Exercises' (by
Bishop Steere), and can be used for that purpose. It assumed its
present form by the addition of a large number of words from his
collections in the 'Handbook of the Swahili Language,' and of a few
from other sources.

As it is intended to be useful, not only to Europeans learning
Swahili, but to Swahilis and others learning to read an English book,
a description of the abbreyiationa is added from Bichop Steere's
♦ Grammar in Swahili.*
