MISSION SAN FRANCISCO DE ASIS
(MISSION DOLORES)
Mission San Francisco de Asis, popularly called Mission Dol-
ores from the nearby Laguna de los Dolores, was the sixth mission
established in Upper California under Father "^unipero Serra, O.F.M.
It was founded June 29, 1776, five days before the Declaration of
Independence. It was dedicated October 3, 1776, and formally open-
ed October 8, 1776. The first marriage was solemnized January 7,
1777 J the first baptism took place in August, 1776; and the first
burial "in Mission Church", in March, 1777. The San Francisco Dir-
ectory of 1857, published by Samuel Colville, in an account of the
Mission, states on Page 36: "At the formation of Mission Dolores
there were fifteen soldiers at the military post under the command
of Samazenilla Flores. The population then was about sixty-four
souls exclusive of -'ndians." Here was baptized Dona Concepcion
Arguello, February 26, 1791. Before the Spistle Altar was buried
Capt. Don Jose Joaqxiin Uoraga, whose remains were transferred to
the "new church" April 8, 1791.
The cornerstone of the present church was laid by Father Palou
April 25, 1782, and the church was dedicated probably on Laetare
Sunday, Apiril 3, 1791. The church is llii feet long and 22 feet
wide, and the adobe walls are four feet thick. The roof contains
the original tiles and the original timbers, rough hewn redwood
lashed together with rairtiide. Wooden pegs of manzanita were com-
monly used in the structure. The ceiling remains as it was deco-
rated by the Indians with vegetable colors. Within the church are
the hand carved altars and statues brought from Mexico in I78O,
the Pascal candle made by the Indian neophytes, the original con-
fessional doors, the revolving tabernacle from Manila, and the
original bells from Mexico. Father Junipero Serra visited the
Mission in 1777, 1779, 1781, and 1781;, and administered Confirm-
ation on three occasions.
The San Francisco Directory of 1852, published by J. A. Parker,
states on page 21 of the Appendix that since the establishment of
the Mission "there have been 7,323 baptisms, 2,131 marriages cele-
brated within its walls, and 5,387 persons have been buried in its
cemetery." Between 1850, irtien Yerba Buena Cemetery was established,
and l85ii, 350 intenaents were made at the Mission. The first inter-
ment was in September, 1776. The earliest death of modem San-
Francisco recorded on the tombstones is that of Peter B. Campbell,
September 3, l8U9, and the latest, that of Edward A. Burns, May 29,
1888.

Here lies a beloved husband, whose manory / Will be cherished, by a
fond and devoted / Wife, and affectionate daughter.
Mourn not my wife and daughter dear
I am not dead but sleeping here, and when
God calls, I then shall rise to meet you with
Angels in Paradise.
Hath the low drooping boughs of the sad weeping
Willow, life's favor departed, how sweetly he sleeps
With the bosom of earth for his couch and his pillow
And two silent mourners to visit and weep.
When the evening wind steals with a low gentle
sighing
On the hill that looks down on the flower covered
Mound, let it be a sad dirge for the lone one,
thats
Sleeping in silence and quietness under the

Our sainted mother gone to rest
But 0 how great we feel her loss
We murmur not she is with the blessed
And we will meekly bear the cross.
Our father too, he bowed his head.
Her loss he could not long sustain,
"oth are numbered with the dead
Our loss is their eternal gain.
