Extra Census Bulletin.
No. 66. WASHINGTON, D. c. March 10, 1894.
DEPAETMENT OF THE INTERIOK,
Census Office,
Washington, D. C, Februarj^ 20, 1894.
Sir:
I have the honor to transmit a bulletin giving the statistics of manufactures in 1G5 principal cities, as
prepared bj" the Division of Manufixctui-es.
Very respectfully,
CARROLL D. WRIGHT,
Commissioner of Labor in charge.
The Secretary op the Interior.
STATISTICS OF MANUFACTURES.
THE 165 CITIES HAVING A POPULATION OF 20,000 AND OVER; 1890.
This bulletin presents by totals for each city the data collected for all classes of mechanical and manufacturing
industries in the 165 cities of the United States having a population of 20,000 and over at the census of 1890. With
the exception of mining and quarrying, the tables include every establishment of mechanical and manufacturing
industry which was returned in these cities at the Eleventh Census as having a product valued at 1500 or more
during the census year. The statistics pertaining to the generation of electricity for lighting and power purposes
are confined to the totals for the cities in the state of New York, St. Louis, Mo., and Wasliington, D. C. In cities
showing a decrease from the totals reported at the census of 1880, a special investigation has been made to verify
the accuracy of the canvass. It is believed that the data constitute a substantially correct presentation of these
urban manufactures. The fact that the agents of the Census Office experienced in some cases difficulty in obtaining
reports from manufacturers, who neglected to complj^ with the requirements of the law, has caused the totals stated
in some instances to be less than they would have been had these reports been included, but these omissions are
comparatively few in number, and affect the statistical value of the data but slightly.
Establishments have been credited to the locality in which the works were situated, and when two or more
plants owned by the same corporation, firm, or individual are located in the same city and engaged in the same
industry, they are tabulated and counted as one establishment. It is impossible, however, to exactlj^ locate the
operations of establishments engaged in the manufacture of timber products classified as " Timber products not
manufactured at mill ", therefore the industry is credited to the place where the office of the establishment is located.
When three or more establishments engaged in this industry are reported for a citj^, the total is presented
separately in Exhibit A and not included in the city total, but when there are less than three establishments they are
included in the total for the respective cities, in order to avoid disclosing the operations of individual establishments.
The year covered by this report is the census year ending May 31, 1890.
At the Tenth Census the statistics of manufactures were published separately for but 100 principal cities. In
comparing the results of the current inquiry with the returns of 1880, it should be borne in mind that radical
changes have been made in both the form and the scope of the inquiry', also in the method of collecting the data. It
will be observed that the item of •' Miscellaneous expenses " is given for 1890 onh'. No previous census inquiry has

2 STATISTICS OF MANUFACTURES.
embraced the cost incurred in manufacturing operations other tlian wages and matei-ials used. With the exception
of a few special inquiries, the question used at the census of 1880 concerning capital was as follows : " Capital
(real and personal) invested in the business". The inquiry at the Eleventh Census was more in detail and intended
to include all the property or assets strictly pertaining to a manufacturing business, whether such property be
owned, borrowed, or hired. The item of " Hired property " is necessarily to a large extent an estimate. It is
shown in a separate column, but is not included in the value of direct investment shown in Table 2.
The question respecting employes and wages used at the Tenth Census generally called only for the " greatest
number of hands employed at any one time during the year ", also " the average number of hands employed ",
without designating the different classes, while the question used at the Eleventh Census called for the average
number of employes to be reported by classes of officers, firm members, clerks ; operatives, skilled and unskilled,
and pieceworkers.
The cost of materials used is the reported cost at the place of consumption. The value of products is the
reported value at the factory of the total product for the year, not including any allowance for commissions or
expenses of selling. The diflfereuee between the apparent cost and the value of manufactured product as presented
can not be taken as a correct indication of manufacturers' net profits, because many items of expense enter into the
mercantile portion of the business, which branch is not within the scope of the census inquiry. The data
furnished in the reports relating to depreciation of manufacturing plants are not sufficient to form a basis for
correct computation, and therefore are omitted from these tables. The following industries were entirely omitted
at the census of 1880, but are included in the totals presented for 1890, viz: bottling; cars and general shop
construction and repairs by steam railroad companies ; china decorating ; clothing, women's, dressmaking ; coffins
and burial cases, trimming and finishing; cotton, cleaning and rehandling; cotton ginning; cotton waste; drug
grinding; druggists' preparations, not including prescriptions; gas, illuminating and heating; hay and straw
baling ; millinery, custom work ; petroleum refining.
The following table presents the totals of the manufacturing and mechanical industries as reported at the
censuses of 1880 and 1890 for the 100 cities shown separately at the census of 1880 :
Table 1.— SUMMARY FOE 100 PRINCIPAL CITIES: 1880-1890.

a The difference between this total and that published in the reports of the Tenth Census is caused by the elimination of data which were duplicated
nder the head of " Mixed textiles ", such data having been also included in the totals of that census for the different branches of the textile industry.
b Does not include the value of hired property,
c Includes officers, firm members, and clerks, and their salaries; this class was not reported separately at the census of 1880.
Table 2 presents the total for all classes of mechanical and manufacturing industries in 165 cities having a
population of 20,000 and over, by city totals, the respective cities being arranged in alphabetical order.
