INTRODUCTION.

UN presenting a re-print of the Hull and
Beverley Directory for the years 1 791-2, the
first work of the kind ever published, it seems
appropriate to offer a few remarks descriptive
of the aspect of the Town of Hull at that time, which may
be found interesting to those who have not had the leisure
to study the works of our local historians.

The period in question was one of the most interesting
In the history of our town, since it marked the transition
between the situation of Old Hull, cramped within the
narrow limits of its ancient fortifications — those walls and
battlements which had withstood many a rude assault, and
which, as an old author quaintly wrote "were at once a

iv. INTRODUCTION.

prison and a safeguard to the inhabitants"* — and the new
impetus given to commerce and progress by the formation
of THE DOCK and the removal of the walls.

At this time Hull was a picturesque little place, its extent
being principally marked by the lines of the fortifications.
At the Southend there yet remained an ancient landing
wharf, and a semi-circular battery of six guns, here had
been placed the ducking chair for scolding wives, which is
represented in Hilbert's engraving 1737. Directly opposite
this landing place still remains the low arch, pierced through
some antique tenements, and leading into Blackfriargate.
This (now called Little Lane) was formerly the entrance
into the town from the river, and beneath its narrow portal
King Henry VHL, Queen Katherine Howard, and their
brilliant suite, must have passed.

Turning to the left, the curious visitor would walk up the
Back Ropery (now H umber Street), enter the Butchery
(now Queen Street), and notice on his right a remnant of
the Blackfriars' Monastery, and other old buildings occupy-
ing the site of the present Shambles. Walking forward,
he would enter the Market Place and perceive the Statue
of King William, not gilded as at present, but painted
stone colour. Turning round, the observer would con-
template two remarkable buildings. On the left the
old Guild Hall would meet his view; this was a quaint

novus politkus einbleiiiaticus Civitatum, i6j8.

INTRODUCTION. V.

Elizabethan structure, built on arches, and not without a
certain dignified appearance. On the right stood the lofty
tower, then used as the County Gaol, which forms a promi-
nent object in Hollar's plate of 1640, where it is termed the
Ball (or Bell) Tower.* Adjoining it was a Guardhouse
(at the end of Mytongate) from which peeped a cannon
pointing directly down the Market Place, as if to quell
instantly any popular outbreak.

Passing the grand old Parish Church, the visitor would
have noticed the east end disfigured by the erection of a
row of small shops built up against the Church-wall and
window ; which latter was filled in the lower half by a large
painting of the Last Supper, " finely pourtrayed by Monsieur
Parmentic:r." A portion of this picture now forms a curious
object in the Church where it stands below the east window.

Silver Street being traversed, the observer would notice
that Whitefriargate was principally composed of private
houses; its western end was called Beverley Gate. The
mouldering gate, which yet remained, overgrown with trees
and rank vegetation, seemed to mourn over its decay, and
would form a picturesque entrance to the town.

Looking southwards, might have been observed the
Hessle Gate standing at the end of the present Humber
Street, then called the Back Ropery. This was a massive
structure, with a barbican spanning the moat, then dried up,

* The Guild Hall, Tower, &c. will be found well illustrated in
Wildridge's Old and New Hull.

VI. INTRODUCTION.

and occupied by a rope -spinner's peaceful walk. Before
each of these gates the visitor would notice large earthen
mounds, portions of the ancient military outworks. In a
charming plate in Hadley's History, the mound at Hessle
Gate is utilised as an observatory by a party ot ladies and
gentlemen in fashionable attire, who are enjoying the fresh
air, and the prospect of the shipping in the river.

Beyond Beverley Gate he would have seen that the town
had made considerable progress to the north-west, many
new streets having been laid out in the rear of the Infirmary.
St. John's Church would be before him, but he could not
reach it except by following the course of the presen
Junction Street into Waterworks Street, and then proceeding
down Engine Street. A guardhouse stood opposite to
Savile Street end. The Town Waterworks were in Engine
Street, and an open reservoir, or "scoop dyke," as it was
then called, occupied the site of the present St. John Street.

The Bowling Green in Waltham Street was in an open
rural locality, and the Charterhouse was then nearly sur-
rounded by fields. The North Gate stood at the end of
High Street, but it was then in a very dilapidated con-
dition.

On the east side of the River Hull, the North Blockhouse,
built by King Henry VIII., formed a conspicuous object
near the North Bridge. It was of the same form as the
South Blockhouse which stood at the entrance of the Old
Harbour, and between the two Blockhouses was the Castle,

INTRODUCTION. Vll.

or Magazine, as it was called in 1791. The Citadel formed
a triangular islet, being surrounded by a moat encompassing
the ramparts.

Having briefly described the then state of the Town, it
only remains to introduce our little re-print, which will be
found to contain many interesting items. Some of the
compound trades mentioned, read oddly enough, " stationer
and mustard manufacturer," " taylor and staymaker,"
"woollen-draper and fruiterer," &c. The constables are
tradesmen, as are also the Fire Engine Company, or
Brigade, as we should now call it. Doubts have been
expressed as to the particular Mace then carried in the
civic processions, but these are cleared up by this book, in
which both the Great Mace (the large silver-gilt mace now
used) and the White Mace (one of the two smaller silver
maces still owned by the Corporation) are mentioned, with
the official bearers.

The list of the original shareholders of the Dock Com-
pany will be read with interest ; their investments proved
most lucrative, and well rewarded their patronage of this
great undertaking.* It is amusing to notice (p. 65) that
the Ferry Boats to Barton "go off" (like guns) at certain
times, the Coaches " set off;" and we find that for London
occupied three days in the journey. The Public-house signs

* The share purchased for the Charterhouse cost ^2 50; for many
years it gained a dividend of ;i^5S) ^^^ even ;^8o, and was in 1819
capitalised at £1600, or 32 new shares of ;^S0 each. — Cook's History
of the Charterhouse.

VIU. INTRODUCTION.

too are curious, we find amongst them — The Old Whale,
the New Whale, the Black Boy, the Cross Keys in the
Market Place and in Whitefriargate, the Coach and
Horses in Mytongate and also in Whitefriargate, the
Tyger and the Rain Deer in the Market Place.

occurred, which rendered it mo-
