information in specialized fields and to improve the usefulness of
special libraries and information services Its program includes
an annual convention for the discussion of common problems by ex-
perts in various fields of activity; consultant services on the
organization and administration of special libraries ; publication
of professional and bibliographical tools and manualsj and a^place-
ment service for members and employers. Chapters established on a
geographical basis and divisions organized in accordance with sub-

Fakes and Forgeries in the Fine Arts
A Bibliography compiled by
Robert George Reisner
During the past century, the scholarly and scientific approach
to art history with emphasis on correct attribution has taken on in-
creasing importance. Consequently, there is a definite need for an
exhaustive bibliography on the subject of fakes and forgeries of
works of art.
This bibliography is a first attempt to bring together known
writings on the subject. It furnishes the scholar, museum curator
and collector with a record of book and periodical literature pub-
lished from 1848 through 1948. The extensive list of titles made
it impractical to include annotations-.
For the convenience of the specialist the bibliography is
arranged as follows: the first section, entitled General, includes
works which discuss two or more art forms or which deal with the
moral, ethical, philosophical and psychological aspects of forgery.
The succeeding sections are devoted to painting, prints, drawings,
miniatures, sculpture, antiques and antiquities, ceramics and mis-
cellaneous art forms. Within each section the bibliography is
again subdivided into the following: 1. Books devoted entirely to
the subject, 2. Books which contain sections devoted to the sub-
ject, 3. Periodical articles.
The bibliography is compiled from the titles found in the art
libraries of the New York and Chicago areas and includes all refer-
ences accessible to the compiler.
