FOREWORD

FROM THE EDITOR

Roalh Anthony Aarons

U'lis-

The FALCON is the annual publication of the graduating class of Saint Augt
tine's College. Its purpose is to document those faces, activities and organizations
that constituted the college environment during the school year. With this historical
aim in mind, the Senior Class presents the 1964 FALCON.

To the administration, we extend our humble appreciation for steering the
institution up the road toward academic excellence. To the faculty, we vow our
gratitude for opening our minds and inserting those elements of knowledge that
will be recalled as we qualify for entrance into our chosen professions. And, to our
Alma Mater, we pledge our eternal dedication, wholehearted support and progressive
intentions of carrying out your Christian values and ideals.

We leave you, Dear Saint Augustine's College, fully prepared to "QUALIFY .
AND APPLY" earnestly and enthusiastically for those graduate schools, positions of
employment and leadership within our communities and nation.

DEDICATION

DEDICATION

TO

WILEY M. DAVIS, DEAN OF STUDENTS

It is only proper that we, the class of 1964 should dedicate the
annual FALCON yearbook to a person who has been associated
with Saint Augustine's College, not only as a student, but as a
guiding light to all students. We speak of Wiley M. Davis.

As Dean of Students, you are a man of patience, tolerance and
understanding. Through these qualities, you have assisted many
students in their problems and needs.

You have sent many students on the road to success through
your suggestions, personal example and inspiration. You have
sacrified your leisure time to assist students in whatever capacity
needed. By and large, you are a true personal friend, nor only to
the graduating class, but to the entire student body. It is with this
appreciation in mind that we extend our thanks through this
dedication.

OUR

PRESIDENT
SPEAKS . . .

Dr. James A. Boyer

^Sahd Auguatrne's College
Salriflb, ^Jurili Carolina

Omr.E (if THE PltESUlENT

TO: Members of the Class of 1964

Paradoxically, you now draw near the end of a four-year journey and
you anticipate suspensefully that climatic day known as "Commencement." Thus,
as you complete your undergraduate program of study, you commence or begin
a new course known as "life." In the school of life, there will be times
when the matter of pursuing one's objectives will seem the same as negotiating
an obstacle course. Mew responsibilities must be assumed, periodic obligations
must be net, and a wholesome way of life must be cultivated and nurtured.

The events of the current school year, local, national and international,
have tested our faith to the utmost. Through such events involving others and
ourselves, we must learn to live as we have been taught in an atmosphere of
Christian higher education at Saint Augustine's.

Always remember that while at this College, a part of you has become
a part of this institution and a part of Saint Augustine's has become a part
of you. Therefore, you and your Alma Mater will be inseparably joined through
the years. Let this close kinship motivate you to the heights of loyalty to,
as well as love and realistic concern for, your Alma plater.

TO THE MEMBERS

OF

THE CLASS

OF

1964

, \\\\ Ijf

Dr. Prezell R. Robinson

The 1964 "Falcon" will be for those who receive it a precious
record reminder and source of information.

\s a record, this book will carry valuable information which you
will turn to many times during the years ahead. You will frequently
look at names, faces and organizations when you are attempting
to identify individuals and events.

\s graduates and alumni, you have a definite responsibility to
your Alma Mater. People will know the college through you
Whether they know it for the better or for the worst, will depend
upon how well vou make your own contribution to society. You
must let your influence be constructive and your objectives honor-
able and' praiseworthy. You must learn to distinguish between
thinkincr  straight  and  honestly,  and  thinking  only  about  yourself;
the latter is dangerous and almost without exception, results in

selfish thinking. . ,

You are inevitably and eternally a part of Saint Augustine s. Be
loyal to your institution. Bear in mind that it cannot become any
stronger than vou will make it. It is hoped that vou will not soon
forget it When the strength of its blessings has enabled you to
contribute financially to its continued forward march, it is expected
that you will do so willingly and cheerfully.
Best wishes for the years ahead.

CLASS HISTORY

In years, many mountains may crumble, and hills may fall but
memories linger on. And who here at Saint Augustine's College
does not have memories?

Remember us' We were the green, unonentated freshmen who
came to the "Aug." The "Aug" who stretched out her beautiful,
wide and wonderful wings; and took us into her arms as a mother
takes' her first born. For Saint Augustine's College was a mother to
us, cloaked in her royal blue and white . . . the very symbol of the
family.

Yes, it was a mild September, that September of 1960. The
winds' were blowing Lightly, scattering the fallen leaves all over the
campus \nd we, as frightened freshmen, had gathered nervously to
whisper phrases about a successful four years. Orientation Week saw
us making friends, obsequiously taking back our "Superiors" meal
trays and scurrying to take various placement examinations. But
as the excitement of this week ended, we were caught up in the
rigorous program of study.

The initial year of the Class of '64, also marked the coming of
the honor society — "Who's Who in American Universities and
Colleges," whose membership is based upon outstanding character,
leadership, and scholarship. During this first year at the college,
we became familiar with such planned activities as the lyceum
program, weekly assembly programs and chapel worship. We are
sure that none 'of us will forget the wonder and inspiration we
received during Religious Emphasis Week.

Our sophomore year found some of us still rather frivolous, but
yet earnest in our study. This was the year that was highlighted
by "Crossing the Burning Sands" into the various fraternities and
sororities — oh what excitement that was!

Then came our junior year, and students still poured in from
north and south, east and west, adding to this enthusiastic class of
'64 This is the year that we witnessed the induction of certain
diligent students 'into the various honor societies which include,
Alpha Kappa Mu; Beta Kappa Chi; Phi Kappa Alpha and Sigma
Rho Sigma.

Now our four years here at Saint Augustine's College draw
to a close, and we, as seniors, reminisce over the times when we
laughed heartily and cheered long whenever our teams brought
a victory home. We also remember with sadness, how some of us
grieved or cried as we saw our class dwindle in number as some
of our classmates fell by the wayside.

Indeed, our venture is over; but as neophytes in our respective
careers we will shortly learn that it is just beginning. Although we
are scattered as leaves on a windy day, we are yet from the same
tree __ a tree of cultivated maturity and intellect, planted on the

campus of Saint Augustine's College.

SENIOR AUTOGRAPHS

"THE BLUE AND WHITE"

Alma Mater

The dark hue of the violet
The snow white lily's bloom,
Are emblems of the virtues rare
That  seal  all  failure's  doom;
That give us courage ever
To dare to do the right:
For Alma Mater dear they stand.
All hail the Blue and White.

All through the days we spend at school

Midst scene we hold so dear,

Where friendships made are ne'er forgot.

Where  always  there's  good  cheer;

While for enchanting knowledge

Or charming laurels bright

We strive our best, we ne'er forget

'Tis for the Blue and White.

Where'er relentless duty calls

O'er life's tempest'ous seas

We'll go. and loyally we'll bide

What  weal  or  woe  decrees ;

Yes, loyal to the colors

That stands for "Right is Might"

Our country's flag the Stars and Stripes

And ours, the Blue and White.

O sing a song of love and praise

From loyal hearts and pure,

For her our Alma Mater dear

And for her ideals true:

For ninety years she's triumphed,

As upward in her flight

She's climbed to be a beacon light —

Her banner Blue and White.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded in 1913 on the campus of Howard
University as an organization whose aims would be something more serious than
social activity. This sorority was established by twenty-two college women who
visualized the development of a union of college women based on certain cardinal
principles and pledged to uphold certain lofty ideals.

The members of Gamma Rho Chapter like all other Deltas have for their
ultimate goal public service. This service is carried out under the National Project
known as Public Service Projects.

The Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority was founded in 1922 at Butler University,
Indianapolis, Indiana. It is the collegiate sorority not founded at Howard Uni-
versity, Washington, D.C. This sorority has emphasis on the development of finer
character, womanhood, scholarship and leadership. To implement its aims, the Sigma
Gamma Rho Sorority has undertaken many projects, such as the Leadership Training
Program and Teen-Town, supervised by superbly qualified persons.

The purpose of this sorority for women is expressed in its slogan, "Greater Service,
Greater Progress." The Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, because of its high ideals and
achievements, has gained recognition: not only on the national scene, but also on
the international level.

under a common bond of friendship and cultural effort seeking to establish the
true worth of womanhood through excellence in educational achievement, human
