FELLOW FALCONS AND FRIENDS:

We shall attempt to present to you a history of four wonderful years in a family of which
we shall eternally be a part. MV submit this message to rou m illustrations and through the
written word.

To our teachers, we say "thank rou." They have been mothers and fathers to us — sparing
the rod and not spoiling the child. To our Administration, we shall remember the goal you have
inspired us to attain. To our young Falcons, the torch is now passed to you; build your Alma
Mater. We will do our utmost to set a good example for you in the busy world ahead. We ask
only that you improve where we have failed, and that you build upon the good in the founda-
tion which we have built.

It is with mingled sorrow and joy that we leave you, our Saint Augustine's Family — sor-
row because of the four years of family unity; joy because we shall employ those talents which
you have given us.

So farewell, dear Alma Mater, and thank you again.

Sincerely yours,

Vernon E. McClean, Editor

ijJEDICATION

To you, DR. PREZELL R. ROBIN-
SON, this Annual is sincerely dedicated.
As student, professor and our Executive
Dean, you have given to us your time,
energy and, most important, you have
given of yourself

This dedication is a small token from
us the Students, Staff and Faculty of
Saint Augustine's College, The kindly
smile, the warm handclasp, the friendly
good mornings, all these are appreciated.
Many evenings we have watched your
burning light in the office, and it has in-
spired us to work to make Saint Augus-
tine's a great institution of learning.
Many times we have appreciated the
slight frown of disapproval and the kind
words of encouragement.

May God richly bless you and, in the
years to come, may the pages of this
book bring you many pleasant memories
of the Class of 1965.

Class of 1965

A Biographical Sketch
The Hour Glass, . . .

The hour glass, with its sands of time, has
slowly but surely spilled its contents, and with
the passing of the last sand, went the life of
ANNE PEACE TOLIVER, our loved one, the
daughter of Anna Peace, and the late Rover-
end Samuel Peace, the wife of Frank A Toli-
ver, and the mother of Frank A. Toliver, Jr.

She was educated at Bennett College,
Greensboro, North Carolina; Clark College,
Atlanta, Georgia; Pennsylvania State Univer-
sity; and Teachers College, Columbia Univer-
sity, New York.

IDuring her matriculation for and completion
of the Masters Degree and the Doctor of Edu-
cation Degree, she served as teacher of Eng-
lish, drama, and speech in the public schools
of North Carolina and at Saint Augustine's
College, where she was on leave at the time of
licr death. .\i Saint Augustine's College she
\sas Chairman of the English Department and
the Division of Humanities.

Her organizational affiliations were many
among which were the Links, Inc., Aljjha
Kapjja Alpha Sorority, the Alpha Betls, the
American Association of University Women,
National Council of Teachers of English, Phi
Delta Kappa Sorority, Kappa Delta Pi Frater-
nity and Les Pins Community Club.

Imbuing students widi the hiunanistic prin-
ciples of knowledge was her philosophy. The
spirit of these principles were demonstrated in
the qualities of excellence epitomized through
her services at Saint Augustine's College.

The imprint of her service is left so deep
that any who follow may clearly .see the ma-
terial used in her life's activity, for mingling
among the shadows are tall trees of love and
devotion and friendship that overshadow
criticism.

A Message from the Student Council

President

A

Dear Class of 1965:

The class of 1931 was the first to receive the honor of being rewarded a
degree for four years of study at Saint Augustine's College. Since that time
many classes have joined that outgoing procession, marking the end of four
successful years of undergraduate study. We have journeyed here for four
years, and now many of us will position ourselves in pursuit of life, liberty
and prosperity.

As a part of Saint Augustine's College, we depart with all that we have
attained to make Her blessings known through performance and service.
The thought of graduation stimulates many other thoughts and produces a
vacuum of bleak emptiness. However, if life is to continue we must roll back
the curtains of darkness and beam our lights upon the subjects of life to
eliminate the darkness with Truth and Good.

The Class of 1965 realizes that the merits of our attainments liere must
be transmitted in our actions, obligations, and responsibilities. The challenge
of progress bids us to stop and to recall momentarily the deeds of the past
and to move with haste to realize the potentials of the future, for we have
"a past to cherish and a future to fulfill."

Very truly yours,

Lattie Baker, Jr.

President of the Student Council

Office of the President

November 24, 1964

Dear Se}jiors:

As you begin to "fold your academic tents" preparatory to leaving the
beautiful camp grounds of Saint Augustine's, try to remember that your so-
journ here was fraught with purpose and meaning.

Your purpose has been to become prepared for the increasingly competi-
tive society that awaits you: this purpose means that you are resolved to be-
come a productive and contributing member of society, an asset and not a
liability.

We have done our best to prepare you for the spiritual, mental, and physi-
cal demands of society: we have attetnpted to acquaint you with the reli-
gious, scientific, and humanistic implications of everyday life and living.

Now, the future is yours. With God's guidance, make the best of it, in His
name.

T'Vry truly yours,

James A. Boyer, President

Class Poem

OH YEARS GONE BY

Oh years gone by, will not we think
of that first day on which the brink
Stood present for a chosen few.
An unknown land so strange and new.

The autumn gave its best that year.
It helped to harness pain and fear.
That everyone could do his best,
Became a sound and solid test.

The days and nights became a time
When friendships blo.ssomed as a rhyme.
An honest smile, a helping hand
Made life a pleasure in this land.

A classroom seen through tired eyes
So often brought the truth to size.
The doubt was left aside the mind
And soon became a sight for blind.

Though many more these days will be
We'll always need to live and see.
In retrospect a strengthened past,
A healthy mem'ry made to last.

A book, a light for all to keep
To give a mind a growth so deep.
The search, the quest for knowledge bent.
Upon a plane of time well spent.

A  laugh,  a  cry,  a  look  aside;
A failure for the one who tried.
The distance twixt the night and day
Found many students torn away.

We muse in happy sadness now.
And feel a warmth upon the brow.
Another year creates a sigh.
Forever be . . . Oh years gone by!

Class History

Our Four Years War began in September of 1961. Our
army was made up of male and female volunteers from
the United States, Panama, the Virgin Islands, and Africa.
We beUeved strongly in the cause for which we were to
fight. We were to fight for freedom from Ignorance, free-
dom from Inexperience, and freedom from Immaturity.

The odds were against us. Unfortunately and ironically,
many of our soldiers had been enchanted by Ignorance,
Inexperience, and Immaturity. The very forces we were
fighting against were inside of us and a part of us. Aside
from that handicap, we soon found that Tradition and
Unnecessary Laws had joined the opposing forces in their
brutal and savage fight against us. Nevertheless, although
it was hard to tell why, we knew that we must fight and
we must win.

Our main battlefield was the Saint Augustine's College
Campus — beautiful with its green grass and tall trees. It
became more beautiful as the months passed. The leaves
on the trees turned to yellow, orange, red, and then
brown; and they fell, as we sometimes did. The sound of
the  fallen  leaves  under  our  feet  gave  us  a  feeling  of  power;
and although we still had to adjust ourselves to the new
surroundings, we were no longer afraid. Now, with our
new found confidence in ourselves, we decided to give our
army a name, THE CLASS OF 1965.

Our war was fought in eight main battles; the first
being the most difficult because it was the first. Many of
our soldiers became discouraged, and decided that this
war was not for them, but at the same time a few more
volunteers joined us. The second battle passed, after which
some of our soldiers decided that it was just not the proper
time to fight. Some found some other of life's experiences
more pleasurable and more profitable; and some just did
not know enough to avoid fading away.

The third battle began in September of 1962 after most
of our soldiers had enjoyed the summer sun away from
the battlefield. Those who were so cornpelled continued
the fight through some of the summer. THE CLASS OF
1965 was prepared this time, although upon arrival we
found that many of our troops could not return.

During this third battle we managed to eliminate many
of the troops of the Ignorance, Inexperience, and Immaturity ar-
mies, but we were becoming weary of war. By the begin-
ning of the fourth battle we realized another opponent.
Misunderstanding. Also, our own troops had decreased in

number, but the rest of us managed to struggle through
that battle without too many mishaps.

Again the summer was upon us and all sides found war
unbearable, so we returned to our homes realizing that the
next battle would probably be more difficult than the
preceeding battles.

In .September of 1963 we returned to "St. Aug." We ex-
pected that we would be minus some of the soldiers who
previously fought so bravely, but we were pleasantly sur-
prised to find that many new volunteers, who had just
won another war or just decided to transfer, joined us.
Thus we note, the gods were with us during that fifth
battle. We had very few casualties and a bright spot. One
of our strategists told us it would be simple to defeat
Misunderstanding by just ignoring her, and remembering the
words of Ralph VValdo Emerson: "Speak what you think
now in hard words, and tomorrow speak what tomorrow
thinks in hard words again, though it contradicts every-
thing you said today. 'Ah, so you shall surely be misun-
derstood" . . . Pythagoras was misunderstood, and So-
crates, and Jesus . . . To be great is to be misunderstood."
So even though Misunderstanding continued to fight, she did
not pose any real problem.

Then came the sixth battle, in which the remaining op-
posing forces got the best of us. Many of our troops had
been wounded during that spring and a few of our allies.
When it was over and time for our annual leave of ab-
sence, we decided that the war had been going on too
long and that it was about time we ended it. We rested
and enjoyed all sorts of summer activities and the com-
forts of home and loved ones.

Upon our return to the battlefield we were confident
that it would not take more than two more battles to end
this war. We fought hard and long, day and night. Dur-
ing the seventh and eight battles we sent some of our
troops into enemy camps to see what was going on. Most
of them brought back good reports; our enemies were
weakening, especially Inexperience. As the days passed,
they became weaker and weaker. And we thanked God.

The Ignorance and Inexperience armies will never be com-
pletely erased from the earth, but they have scattered and
each one of us will constantly and individually have to
continue to fight against them. THE CL.\SS OF 1965 felt
that this may be good; it presents a challenge and makes
life interesting. Immaturity admitted defeat. She will rest
and multiply, to attack again at some later date, as she of-
ten does. But THE CLASS OF 1965 has done its share in
eliminating some of them. Tradition just faded away. We
found that some of the Unnecessary Laws were not so
unnecessary, and we compromised with them.

So we will sign our peace treaty on May 30, 1965 and
we will leave Saint Augustine's College campus. Faithfully,
we will remember all of our friends. And pressed in our
books of memories will be the homecomings, lyceum pro-
grams, chapel services, dances and parties, and all other
activities staged to keep up the moral of our troops. And
unforgettable are those of our ranks who received the Sig-
ma Rho Sigma, Alpha Kappa Mu, Beta Kappa Chi, Phi
Kappa Alpha, Phi Alpha Theta, and Who's Who medals
of honor for their outstanding achievements. And we will
not bur)- the past too deeply, for we need it: the knowl-
edge and experience it rendered to enable us to glory in
the future.

So, aged, but strengthened bv the last four vears, we,
THE CLASS OF 1965, call upon William Shakespeare for
some appropriate words: "Good night, good night! Parting
is such sweet sorrow,"

C/^ji" Prophecy

It is the year nineteen hundred seventy-five, and a group of sociahtes (of which
I am a member) from New York City are sponsoring a cruise to Paris, France.
We are to leave from the New York harbor.

On saiUng day, the crowds boarded tlie ship with excitement and great antici-
pation. After I had been in my cabin for a while, I decided to go on deck and
greet some of my sailing partners. Immediately, I recognized an old classmate of
mine from Saint Augustine's College, Montez Anthony. She is now working on
the President's Committee for "Better Physical Fitness." Working along with her
are Mattie Davis, Octavius Rowe, and Thomas Hargrove. With her Committee,
she has traveled to all the principal cities in the United States. She has come in
contact with many other members of the class of nineteen sixty-five. She informed
us that: Dr. Lattie Baker is now Governor of North Carolina. Mable Jenkins and
Carolyn Heartly are key social workers in Chicago, 111. Tura Tomlin is a professor
of Education at Ohio University. Jacqueline Hanna, Sonja Higgs, and Mary Wil-
liams are teaching in the Education Department at Florida A & M. Everett Kelly
is now the personal secretary to the President and Doris Williams is secretary for
the First Lady. Lucy Hawes and Eleanor Harvey are professors of Education at
the old "Alma Mater."

Dr. William Miles is practicing medicine in Los Angeles, California. Douglas
Scarboro is head of the Science Department at A & T College in Greensboro,
North Carolina. Barbara Lewis is head of the English Department there. Henriet-
ta Johnson is now appearing as leading lady at the Metropolitan Opera Com-
pany. Dorothy Turner is professor of Mathematics at Howard University. Soon
we were hungry, so we decided to have dinner together in the dining room. To
our surprise, Charlie Howard was our waiter. He told us that Theodore Brown,
Edward Chester, Noah Thorpe, Rufus Hart, and Creighton Incomenius are now-
playing professional football. They are married to their Saint Aug. sweethearts.
He told us also that there would be a dance that night, featuring "Joe Cutchins"
and his Combo.

Finally, we were walking upon the soil of Paris, France. We found great delight
in exploring its many wonders. While shopping in a dress shop, we were surprised
to find that one of the most attractive models was Cecilia Griffith. We learned
from her that Eugenia Rochelle is a French teacher in the school system there.

Carolyn Jackson is the owner and operator of one of the chief modeling schools
in France.

Dianne Harris is playing the leading role at one of the best theaters in Paris.

Herbert Silas is the top dance instructor in France.

Too soon, we sailed back to the States. Everyone enjoyed the trip. The wonder-
ful experiences of "Gay Paree" will long remain with us. For a few of us, this trip
will be remembered as a "dream come true." For we had a dream once, that
members of the nineteen hundred sixty-five class of Saint Augustine's College
would take their respective places on the stage of the world and play their parts
well. Thev have done so.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was found in 1913
on the campus of Howard University as an orga-
nization whose aims would be something more ser-

the development of a union of college women based

on certain cardinal principles and pledged to up-
hold certain lofty ideals.

The members of Gamma Rho Chapter like all
other Deltas have for their ultimate goal public ser-

Sigma

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., was founded January 9, 1914 on the campus
of Howard University, Washington, D.C. The motto of the fraternity is "Culture
for Service and Service to Humanity." For the men of Sigma, this is more than a
motto; it is a personal mode of living, in that all activities are undertaken with
the idea of rendering service.

The three great ideals of Phi Beta Sigma are embodied in the philosophy -
■'Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service." The realization of these ideals in their
highest practical meaning has made and must continue to make Phi Beta Sigma
a great and dynamic fraternity.
