It was the best of times,

{

it was the epoch of belief,

I

we had everything before us,

it was the worst of times.

it was the age of wisdom.

it was the age of foolishness.

it was the epoch of incredulity,

it was the spring of hope,

it was the winter of despair,

we had nothing before us.

we were all going direct to heaven.

we were all going direct the other way.
Tale of Two Cities
Charles Dickens

Dedication

On behalf of the senior class with this token of our love and apprecia-
tion, the 1975 edition of the Falcon is dedicated to Doctors Henry and
Addessa Lewis, two people that we admire and respect.

Their scholastic achievements vary in status and location. Alumnus
from our own St. Aug. in which they received their B.S. degrees, they
completed their graduate work from Purdue University awarding their
M.A.T. degrees and from Utah State University, receiving their Ed. D.

Their various accomplishments have shown their dedication and
devotion in pursuing the educational field.

Doctors Henry and Addessa Lewis have won the hearts of the ''Aug''
Family. And in extreme gratitude, we present you this dedication.

"As you go throughout life,

let your scholastic excellence shine bright

so that others will follow your path. "

HER BEAUTY,

SHE THINKS HER BROWN BODY

HAS NO GLORY

IF SHE COULD DANCE

NAKED,

'^Of people and how they go along,
As tin foil and nerves blend
Into more people as they follow along
Today, Cyclops bellows from tv tape
The same re-heard sounds of violence.
I have a candy-apple red B-52.
Fm napalm in Watts.
I shall be gas from other hydrogens.
Today, I must go to Biology class
To give this murdered frog to my Professor.
Today, Pushkin will bleed in ancient snow.
Today, my unborn son will grow to war
Today, I will use my anti-knowledge
To understand the images of pine rope,
That pulls beneath my outer skull
Today, I will toss more periods and colons
Onto a page that cannot understand why
There is more of the same,

AS I GREW OLDER

It was a long time ago.

I have almost forgotten my dream.

But it was there then.

In front of me.

Bright like a sun —

My dream.

And then the wall rose.

Rose slowly.

Slowly

Between me and my dream.

Rose slowly, slowly,

Dimming,

Hiding,

The light of my dream.

Rose until it touched the sky —

The wall.

Shadow.
I am black.

I lie down in the shadow.

No longer the light of my dream before me.

Above me.

Only the thick wall

Only the shadow.

My hands!

My dark hands!

Break through the wall!

Find my dream!

Help me to shatter this darkness,

To smash this night.

To break this shadow

Into a thousand lights of sun.

Into a thousand whirling dreams

Of Sun!

Langston Hughes

WE PASSION FHOM OUR

MxsB Burnt Kn^nBtintB

Queen of the night,

wrap the cloak of ebony softness

Around the mysterious curves of your mind
You are

stillness of a day complete

Yet anticipating the beginning of a new day
Twin pools

reflect

your life, your soul, your being.
Revelations

are etched in

the satin of your brow.
Moonshadow

dart here or there

in search, in pursuit,
(but always bringing it home)
The passion

of living burns

deep within

And its embers

are like

a morning shower
Unrelenting

penetrating

creating
You are the

positive force

of a negative plane
The ectasy

of beauty

the passion of pain
The gentleness

of a spring

morning rain.

Desire

Desire to us

Was like a double death.

Swift dying

Of our mingled breath,

Evaporation

Of an unknown strange perfume

Between us quickly

In a naked

Room.

Black Students

In groves of green trees
The world is pastoral and
Through green fields of innocence
You walk in quiet bucolic splendor
Thinking life will make some salutation
To a pink or gold card bearing the alphabet
Through ABCDEForS and I.
You await the fall
And the X-Ball.

You learn to sip your tea —

The little brownie turned, absurd, just so,

And how to appreciate Wedgewood

And Chippendale, thinking Benin is a kind of gin

Hoping to see the Great Nations of Europe

And photograph the stately ruins there.

Africa is an ambassador with nappy hair.

A magazine rack erupts in your room

And bulges with the offerings from Look, Life,

Times, Newsweek and the Readers Indigestion.

One lone case of white Encyclopedia Britannica stands

Untouched, But there is no picture of Christ hanging

With Messianic, tortured blue eyes

Muttering 'Ts lynched, I dies. "

One therefore assumes a sort of progress has been made

Though the brains are intact

Fresh as the thoughts of the newly born

With no puzzlement, no anger, wrath or scorn

The soul anestheticised

Frozen and aindone

The body a roving, singing automation ...

RECOLLECTION

Mother was a wolf; snarled her long
Teeth at bad men who bothered us.
Mother went out at night when her
Friend the moon shone her the prickly
Path of thorns to find that which
Fed us.

I saw Mother weep within those eyes of
Cow, she'd look at me and my brother
And her fear would jump like a rabbit
From her eye into ours.

I looked at the dark women and marveled

At the infinity of her eye painted with

The image of a black man from Texas; there

It was hot when he walked toward the

Sun. Wondering . . . Wondering . . .

Lonesome alonge her beings promonotory; she'd

Smile to her secret lover the moon.

She growled fierce when the fish face man
Smiled money. We: My brother and I thought yum
His juicy bone; but Mother wolf said we were
Human. The fish face man grew as we grew.
The larger we became the more oppressive
He is. Mother wolf wouldn V let us eat
The fish face mail. We should have, but Mother
Wolf said we are human . . .

If we must die — let it not be like hogs
hunted and penned in an unglorious spot
while round us bark the mad and hungry dogs
making then mock at our accursed lot.

If we must die — let us nobley die

so that our precious blood may not shed

in vain: then even the monsters we defy

shall be constrained to honor us though dead

Oh. Kinsmen! We must meet the common for

though far outnumbered, let us show us brave

and for their thousand blows deal one deathblow!

What though before us lies the open grave?

Like men we'll face the murderous cowardly pack

pressed to the wall, in unity, and always fighting back,

Claude McRay
