St.

Augustine's
College

THE FALCON

Saint Augustine's College,
founded in 1867 and located
in Raleigh, North Carolina,
is a historically black,
church-related,
coeducational institution of
liberal learning offering the
baccalaureate degree. It is in
the critical and exciting
juxtaposition of past, present
and future that Saint
Augustine's sets its mission.
The mission is to prepare all
students to become
knowledgeable agents of
change — capable, creative
and responsible citizens of
intedependence and
integrity; who nnake positive

contributions to society

by providing for maximum
development of their
intellectual capacity,
developing practices of

wisdom  and  judgenient;
providing opportunities for
personal, social and cultuial
growth; providing
experiences in acquiring
knowledge and fundamental
skills; and contributing to
research related to the
teaching-learning process
and the general

Happy Faces,

We Have Arrived

At St. Aug.!

i

I

On the day of arrival in August, the Falcons came
in droves. The students came to Raleigh by the
various nrieans of transportation in either a car, bus,
plane, ship, or train before venturing to Saint
Augustine's. After arriving and settling in, the
students took part in the regular pre-curriculum
activities associated with any college throughout the
nation. These activities included freshmen
orientation, pre-registration, and registration, and
these activities lasted approximately one week. The
official start of classes came soon after, and thus, the
students set out to complete the task that they were
there for.

Since the theme is "The World Meets at

St. Aug.", what better way can this be

demonstrated than by showing the

statistics of students and where they are

from. This academic year there were

1638 students enrolled. At the top of this

list was the Tarheel State with

approximately 53% of the total

enrollment. The North Carolina residents

numbered 867 during the first semester.

Second, with approximately 7%, or 120

m
m

Oh, Those North
Carolina Days!

students enrolled, was South Carolina,

while Virginia was ranked third with 118

students or approximately 7 % of the

total enrollment. The rest of the list was

as follows:
New York 6 1

District of Columbia 59

New Jersey 53

Maryland 46

Georgia 4 1

Getting Around
On Campus . . .

Among the United States' Territories

there was an enroUnnent of 9 students.

This nine was comprised of all these

students coming from the Virgin Islands.

The last 116 students came from foreign

countries. Sonne of the countries included

Zaire, Nigeria, and Lybia.

As one can see the student body came

from all over the world.

13

The average life of the typical Falcon dealt mainly with

going to classes to the cafeteria, to the library and then

back to the dornn. But these were not the only activities the

Mighty '83-'84 Falcons took part in. For starters the

Freshmen Class was required to go to Vesper Service held in

the Chapel. Other activities included periodic movies. The

featured films were "Ain't Misbehavin' ", "Creepshow",

"First Blood", and "The Sting".

Not only did the students get
involved individually in affairs, but
some got together to beconne the
naennbers of clubs, social fellowships,
fraternities, and sororities. These
organizations sponsored activities to
stimulate student participation. The
most popular events were the dances.
Another popular event was the auction
of the Alpha's pledges.

Convocation •

Two social events urged the

entire student body to go. These

were the Lyceum and the

Colloquium. The Lyceum was a

program in which the student

body asembled in the Fine Arts

Building. The Lyceums brought

many interesting people to the

campus such as Mr. Fingers, a

magician, and Tom Sorenson,

campaign manager for Ted Hart.

The Colloquium was a program in

which the staff and faculty had a

chance to speak about their

respective departments. Speaking

of departments, the ROTC

Departnrient sponsored two annual

events to which the student body

was invited. The first was the

Awards Cerennony at which several

military science students were

recognized for their achievements.

The second was the Military Ball

and Dance which was held to

honor the MS/IV cadets. Not only

did the students take part in

events that were associated with

departments, they also took part

in special college gatherings. The

nr\ost important was Convocation,

the official opening of the college

for this acadennic year.

Students were involved in Black

College Day. Many Augites

nnarched downtown to meet other

Black colleges and universities'

representatives and listened to

several speakers. Another special

event was the Coronation in which

a multitude of spectators saw Miss

Eva Diggs crowned and become

Miss Saint Augustine's College,

1983-'84.

Dedication

Dean C.C.

Gray

1984

Dean Christopher C. Gray is
one of the people who nnakes
Saint Augustine's the College it
is today. A native of Raleigh,
Dean Gray came to Saint
Augustine's in 1949 at the
request of Dr. Harold L. Trigg,
the College's first Black
President. Since that time he
has served the needs of the
cannpus community in various
capacities. Many graduates
remennber him as the Dean of
Men, a position he held for
many years. President Emeritus,
Dr. James A. Boyer remembers
him as a trusted and loyal
member of his administration
who always sound advice during
the turbulent sixties when
students sought to assert
themselves politically. Dr.
Prezell R. Robinson, the current
President of the College, has
depended upon Dean Gray for
spiritual guidance, and views
him as a moral anchor in the
rough seas of a changing society.
Students have, and continue to
depend upon Dean Gray's
wisdom, his honesty, and his
unyeilding dedication to those
he serves. The Senior Class of
1984 has come to know him as
a disciplined man, slow to judge,
eager to assist, and relentless in
his efforts to help us realize our
dreams. Dean Gray has taken
us, and he has loved us all.

Dr. Prezell R

Robinson

President

We cannot predict what the Decade of the Eight-
ies will bring. Our lives seenri to be under control of
econonnic factors we cannot control — or forsee. As
administrators of an organization so dependent on
the good will and support of an outside consti-
tuence, we remain on the knife edge between suc-
cess and failure. If our family — alumni, faculty,
student body, and staff — guards our flank, we can
only become stronger within ourselves. If our bene-
factors — foundations, corporations, donors, and
governmental institutions on the national, state,
and local level — continued their support, we can
only become better capable of doing the job of edu-
cating young people. Our future, simply stated, de-
pends on all of us doing the best we can. Our best
must be the education of young minds, the
strengthening of young bodies, and the bolstering
of young spirits. If we succeed in turning the un-
formed young person of today into the productive
citizen of tomorrow, we have secured the future for
generations to come. With your help, there cannot
be any other result.

Prezell R. Robinson

Coronation

Eva's Cornation was held Friday, November 4, 1983.
Everyone was excited and anticipated a festive evening.
Dr. Robinson was on hand to deliver greetings on behalf
of the College. Dean White was present to be sure that
everything went as planned. The beauty of the evening
was enhanced by the beauty of our Queen, her Court,
and the queens of fifty-six cannpus organizations.

Everyone except Stephanie anxiously awaited Eva's

entrance. 7, Eva paused a few moments to smile at

her subjects, and to give herself time to realize that

her dream had come true. 8. Some of us ./;/,' do not
