FOREWORD

This was writt3n in memory of our Grandparents.
Jacob and Elizabeth Moser

Grandmother Must-r used to say "Just once I would
like *.o s.e all my cniidren and grandchildren together —
all ■•: :nem at one time" Knowing :^.;s ;3 even more impos-
sible ^ince our addresses reach fiom coast to coast, it
se-^- ; to me that by arranging as many facts a^ '.ould be
asstipoied in family chapt..r> would be the su:e--t way of
having us all together "just urc;."

Dan Cupid's arrows. IVIr Stork's persistent visits, and
roving relatives nearly defeat; d me. Knowing that Dan
will continue shooting arrows, that Stork will continue
visiting, and that relatives will continue roving. I realize
some of the pages will soon be .naccu: jte But this v.'orK
has been a pleasure.

This task could not have seen accomplished without
much cooperation from all of you will all of you accept my
sincere thanks and appreciation? And if there are errors
and incomplete data, please accept my apologies, too.

Mr. and i^irs. Warren Hart'cerg. editor and publishers
of the Milfor^-" Herald-News. w*ji. intere--ted and helpful
in prodi'roadmg. arranging and printing this booklet. For
this I 'P sincere^' grateful.

THE FAMILY OF JACOB MOSEU

THE FAMILY OF JACOB MOSER

Jacob Moser was born in Baden. Germany, on March 23, 1859,
where his mother, Margaret, and his grandmother had fkd from Swit-
zerland, because of religious persecution. Aunt Bena r<^memcers hear-
ing her grandmother tell of the time she spent in jail after she had
been baptized. The State Church was unfnt-p.dly towai;.! any Christian
faith other than the one prescribed by it.

In 1872 at the age of thirteen Jacob cam_ to America with his
mother and his grandmother. They travtried with other immigrant
families. Among them was the V'ugel I'amiiy. Albert Vogel, the pa-
triarch of the Vogel families we know, wa> a lad then, too

Jaci. b and his mother and his grandmot.-^.er ..ved in Morton, Illinois.
As he grew up in Morton hi was appretitiLrd to a wagon maker.
Here he became a skilled wheelvvTight and v. .i^on maker.

He became an American citizen, after his twenty-first birthday
in 1880.

As a young man he became a Christian, the exact date is not
record' d.

On December 10, 1832, he was married to Elizabeth Jacobs at the
Morton Apostolic Christian Chureh. The minister and elder of the
Morto,n churcn was George Welk, who performed their marriage ser-
vice. Witnesses who signed their marriage certificate were Andrew
Rapp and Baitlett Rapp.

Elizabeth Jacob Moser was born in Morton, Illinois on ;May 4, 1860.
She was the daughter of John and Elizab^-th ?Jinger Jacobs. She had
a brother Emmanuel and a sister Caroline Jacobs Winzeler. Their
mother i .1 died when these children were very small. Their father
then married Regulia Foster. George Jacobs and Bena Jacobs Beyer
were children of this marriage. This niother died, too, when her
children_ were small. Then F^:nt:r Jacobs married Salome Wick. To
thi.s third marriajif was 'o'k-~ F. iv. ard Jaco'fi>. J'i'Mi Jacobs 'who died
as a ladi. and Anna Jacoos GeU

Four children were born m Ciay umville. Jacob t . u moved his
family to the farm where the rest oi tile famiK was burn and reared.

THE FAMILY OF JACOB MOSER

This IS the farm where Fred and Bena Knapp live now. The same
house still stands more than three-quarters of a century later. The
praine m this area had been surveyed and section lines marked, many
of them fenced, but many of the loads had not been opensd. The
land was swampy and was covered with lush prairie grass that grew
as high as a horse and often as high as the rider, too. Our grandfa-
ther and his neighbors worked hard with simple tools to drain the
swamps and break the tough sod. Sections of farm land and small
fields, too, were enclosed with hedge fences that grew to an immense
height and to great density.

The Mosers bought their first eighty acres for thirty-five dollars
an acre. This farm had been broken and tilled, but was undrained.

As the family grew rooms were added to the original house first
in one direction and then in another Several of these additions
have been removed.

Edward Moser remembers when his mother rode the corn plant-
er to trip the seed corn into hills at intervals; he also remembers
how his parents sat together one evening and figured that with a
planter that tripped the corn automatically they would get enough
more corn pianted to pay for a new planter that then cost about
twenty-five dollars.

In 1894 when William was a baby the family was stricken with
typhoid fever. The mother and all the children were seriously ill
for many week?

In \92l Salorre^ "Aunt Sally," became fatally ill one morning.
Her parents and Uncle Bill had gone to Danville to shop. Uncle'
Carl found her at noon-time when he returned from the field. Her
parents returned after darkness had fallen to find her near death. She
passed away that same night. Salome was 22 years old. Her brothers
and sisters remember her as a pleasant, quiet person, a good Christian.
Your historian remembers her as a young grown-up aunt, as some one
to look up to ar.d someone to please. She is remembered as a tall
person Betty Grimm and Betty Bcier both look somewhat like her.

Father and Mother Moser moved to Cissna Park, Illinois in 192.5
to a neat little bungalow. Father Moser passed away at this home
after many years as an invalid. He lost his speech and foi' a long
time could only whisper. Finally even his whisper was nearly in-
audible.

After Grand faihcr'.s dLath iii lune 1933, Grandmother lived alone
until 'that autumn when she sold her household effects and went to
live with her son Edward and his family. She lived with them until
Uncle Fred and Ai"it, Bona came t" Illinois, she then made her home
with them iint:' -W. death in 1^111 This last home wa.'- the same
one where sh ' d .-tH-nl •no'-:' ;if ' r mru-ried life.
