- HALL -
This family inherits from many generations of ancestery.
The name is one of the oldest in America, and was established at several
points in New England at almost simultaneous dates. The origin of the name
has been the subject of much speculation among its bearers, and three prob-
able sources are mentioned. The most probable is the fact that baronial
seats in England were almost always called Halls, with some tital annexed.
When men were obliged to take surnames, many took the name of their estates,
and thus many names were made to end with Hall. The Norman or Anglo Saxon
usage "De La Hall" (transation of the Hall) , accounts for most of the occassions
where this became a surname, without doubt. One authority attributes it to
the Welch word for salt or dweller near a salt mine. Again it is traced to
the Norwegion word for hero, which is Hallr, the last letter being silent
and only indicative of the nominative case. As the Norwegions overran
England at one time, many of their words found their way into the language,
Hallett is a diminutive of Hall, and was probably given to a dwarfed or younger
son, only the olders son being entitled to the patron ymic in earliest usage.
(
FORWARD
This family record is intended to include as many of the descendents of
Jehu Hall as it is possible to gather at this time so future generations may
know who their ancestors were.
Other branches of the family will be written up so they can be connected
to this as soon as the author can get it done.
This record is to be dedicated to all of the relatives who so graciously
contributed their records and to my husband who so willingly furnished me with
thousands of stamps and writing paper, to say nothing of the dollars to send
for death, marriage, and birth records, deeds, wills, etc. and never grumbled
when I became so involved in this work that sometimes I hadn't done the house-
hold chores that should have been done. When he returned home after a hard
days work, or forgot to do some task that he had asked me to do.
I have tried to write this as correctly as I possibly could, but I am
afraid many individuals will see mistakes and wonder how I came by such data -
I hope the ones who find mistakes will correct them in their book and send
me the corrected version so I can make corrections in my copy; and I also
hope people who haven't sent their complete record will do so, even tho
this much of the family history has been written, someone might write a
bigger and better one someday.
My thanks also go to Sherry Guymon Moore who has so graciously consented
to type and run off copies of this so I can distribute this among all who
desire a copy.
THE
HALL
FAMILY
At this time I will only write up the descendents of Jehu Hall, as he is
the one I am descendend from.
So far the origin of the family starts with John Hall born 1752-4 in
Pennsylvania, d. between 1819 when he signed Marriage bond for his son Joseph
in Christian Co. Ky. and 1821, when his heirs signed an indenture in Christian
Co. Ky. , over to John Hall, Jr. for lands on Haw River in Chantam Co. H.C*
He Married Mary Pyle probably in Pennsylvania, she died 12 Aug. 1846 in Shelby
County Illinois and is burled in Ridge Cemetery where a murble slab marks
her resting place. Issue: order of birth unknown.

An interesting story wa3 tcld me about Green Willis by Allen
Hall, who said a member of the family could probably tell it
better; but this is the way he remembered it; Green W. was
living in Arkansas when the Civil War broke out and was
requested thera to enlist on the side of the Confederates, but
he didn't want to fight against the Union, so rather than be
forced to fighr. with the Confederates, he took his wife and
baby back to Missouri on a horse, riding by night so he wouldn't
be captured and forced back into the Confederate Service. They
slept days. When they came to the Missouri River, he put his
wife and baby on the horse to swim across the river, he hung
onto the horses tail and it took them across - none but the
horse could probably swiip. Issue:

stories in regards to Margaret, I am not sure if her name was
Margaret or Mariah.(Williani F, Hall wrote in 1921 that "Mariah"
died in Northern Mo. while making a visit to her father's home)
Laura Baker wrote in 1956 that her father's two sisters never
came to Missouri; they died in Illinois, she rather thinks one
of them was thrown from a horse and died from the injuries,
the other one died of Milk sickness. She left two small children
who died before maturity.

BIOGRAPHY OF NATHAN THOMAS HAI.L
Appeared in "Republican Leader", a Trenton Nebraska news paper
11 Oct, 1935:
N, T, Hall was early, prosperous settler here, he came with his
wife and baby son to Trenton in 1883'=43 he homesteaded the land betw<=en the
Brittan orchard West of town and the. Peter Hagen pi ace ^ two or three miles
west of Trenton, Their timber claim is what is nov known as the Oliver Long
farm.
Originally fr'isri IllioniSs and after living in Sutton a few months,
they came to Trenton in a horse drawn moving wagon. The wagon and team belonged
to John Isaac, also cf Sutton. Nebraska, who made the trip to look over the
country; Mr, Hall had already made his first trip and filed on his homestead.
Mr, Hall's brother Green F, Hall drove through with an ox team.
At this time Trenton was a little burg located west of what is now called
Blue Creek, the buildings of the town stood around on tb.ft hillside where the
A, H, French house now stands, (Mr, Dale, who was in Nebraska State Library,
wrote me in 1957 that; it was what is now one half mile west of present
Trenton, north of Pow Wow grounds, E.T,)
Mr, Hall made a living when he first came to Trenton, digging
wells, using a spade and pulling the dirt out of the hole with a bucket and
rope. Many of these wells on the divide were 200 feet deep, and it required
months to put down a well that furnished a supply of good water. The effort
required in those days to get a good well was great, but the reward of
having a never ending supply of the very best water in the world was sufficent
to repay the pioneers fcr all their work, at least eg they felt,
Mr, Hall was a person well suited to pioneering for he had the
ability to do several things that vjould make him. and his family a living.
As soon as the settlers began to build with lumber, painting jobs were to be
had, and Mr, Hall had acquired considerable ability in this line, so he
began painting the new houses for the people as soon as they were built.
Page 5
Paint was not put in cans those days already to put the bru«h in and go to work.
But, the dry powder and oil had to be mixed and this was the part he had made
a study of before coming to this new country, and he was an expert at what
might be called a lost art today,
Mr„ Hall was Trenton's second postmaster, being preceeded by M. R.
Burton, later he founded Trenton's second lumber yard (Mr, Dale said it was
probably third or fourth) , and as time passed he operated various lines of
business.
Four of the six children of Mro and Mrs. Hall were born in the house
since the town of Trenton was moved to its present location, and at the
present time is occuped by the youngest son. Glen K.„ Hall & family, A daughter,
Mrs, Ethel Collett lives at Crete Nebraska, Two sons Frank and Leonard live
in Denver, Colorado, another daughter Mrs, Golda Gillaspie lives in Trenton,
the youngest child, Mrs, Alda Adams lives in Long Beach,, Calif, ,, (1935) (When
Mrs, Ethel Collett visited me in 1957 told me her fath?.r was a banker when
she married Mr, Collett who was also a banker E, T,) Issue:

probably of scarlet fever & a red casket was used as that was

Page 7
and when LaCenter built a new school house down in town the
Smiths bought the old school house which sat on the hill
north of LaCenter. They had plent of room there for their
large family, several of which were married and had families
and were always paying the old folks a visit - the Smiths were
a very hospitable lot, so the house was usually full and what
good times everyone had at their place. Aunt Martha was
always coming up with some new game, I've often wondered
where she got them, she was a natural entertainer, could be
reading and carrying on a conversation with several people
at the same time. Her favorite song was "Will There Be Any
Stars in My Crown?" she was never too busy with her family
to go and administer to the sick and most everyone called her
"Aunt Martha". I have many fond memories of the Smith
family. Our ranch was about 2-1/2 miles north of their place
and we always walked to LaCenter and stopped at their place
on our way to town and visited awhile. We always looked
forward to stopping at their place both going to and coming
from town. When I first started school at Pine Grove
Dist. 16, we only had six-month terms - so when I was eleven
I decided to go to LaCenter for the next three months and
walking back and forth; but, I usually stopped at "Aunt
Martha's and very seldom walked home, it was always so
interesting at their place, E, T. ) Issue:

He has had a chance many times to go to N.Y. and Wash,, D.C.
but he is an outdoor man and loves the hills and rivers of
Missouri, where he can fish and "be away from the big city
life. He says there is more to life than the money. He is
head of the Associated Press Bureau at Jefferson City, Mo.
He covered the convention for presidential nomination at
San Francisco in 1956 for Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri.

Walters, son of William Henry Walters and Beatrice Morris.
Virginia Faye is a natural artist, she took art in Lincoln,
Nebr, University. Received a scholarship for Parsons
School of Art in N.Y. where she went in 1940. She then
received another scholarship from that school, so spent
two years in N.Y.. She majored in fashion design and is an
expert seamstress, besides her drawing and painting ability.
She was finished when the war came along - there was nothing
for her to do in her field, she went over to Massachusetts
to visit a friend and took training for drafting under the
Government. She was high in her scholastic record, she was
one of many who were sent to An Arbor Michigan for extensive
training in tool designs and other things; so she was trained
and did war work all during the war, and then finally wound up
as a draftswoman and tool deisnger. She worked in Springfield
where she met Dick and they were married. He was with Pratt
& Whitney, so they both do similar work. She has developed
into an engineer on paper, tho she doesn't know the mechanics
of it, but can work out problems on paper. They were both finally
working for the same company, who transferred them to Glendale,
Calif. (by her mother, Blanche Hall Martin).
