Michael Steele, the former Ueutenaiit governor of Marylaiui and a leading
conservative analyst appeared with political commentator Roland Martin at
Seahrook Auditorium. From opposite sides of the political aisle, Martin was
.III announced supporter of Barack Ohama; Steele supported John McCain and
Sirred as head GOPAC, a Republican pohtical action committee. For nearly
two hours on October 14, 2008, the two shared their thoughts and
prescriptions on issues such as illegal immigration; the military, HBCU's and
the presidential election. They offered detailed, frank analysis of all issues and
Martin criticized the choice of Sarah Palin as a vice presidential nominee. He
accused her and the media 0/ using what was sugi;ested to he racially charged
code words and phrases such as "soccer mom", "NASCAR dad" and "Joe
Six Pack" to reference white Americans. In this, Steele accused Martin of
over-generahzing and stated that blacks in his home county often took their
children to soccer games, though the NASCAR term was unexplainable.
The election ivasn't the only hot button issue they tackled. Both men agreed
that black colleges do not demand enough financial support from alumni, that
admissions standards are loosen to the detriment of universities, and that the
economic crisis would force oldfashioned, conservative spending habits. Bejore
closing to a standing ovation, Martin and Steele challenged the audience to do
more to support l\S. soldiers.

On November 1 1, 2008 in Seabwok Auditorium, Doutia Brazile made her first speech since the
election of Sen. Barack Obama as the nation's next president. A Democratic strategist, Brazile
irorl^cd on j presidential campaign in every election since 1984. In speaking to the audience, slic
mentioned the importance of coming South first to celebrate the historic victory at the polls.
Chancellor Anderson , in his introduction of the guest speaker, also touched on the historic nature ot
the election and that the day should forever be knoum simply as "il/4". Dr. Anderson praised
Brazile's work in past campaigns. In her speech, Brazile spoke of her experience as a strategist,
columnist and contributor to CNN and ABC News, but focused mainly on her euphoria after the
election of the nation 's first black president. Well received by those in attendance, she described her
delight on election night when not just Florida, but several other states that had voted Republican,
turned to the Democratic nominee. Though his election would not cure the racial ills that have
plagued the nation, Brazile said Obama's election was a step in the right direction. She pointed out
that it took more than the black vote, but a coalition of all types, to put him in office and to prove
that hate is not a strategy for victory. In her closing remarks, Brazile paraphrased Dr. Martin
Lullicr King Jr. . by saying that Obama's character far oiinveighed the color of his skin.

microcredit. The "Banker to the Poor, " as Yunus is sometimes
referred, established the Grameen Bank in Bangadesh in 1983
fueled by the belief that credit is a fundamental human right.
The intent was to help poor people escape poverty by providing
loans with suitable terms and teaching them sound financia.
principles. A small effort in the mid-1970s advanced to the
forefront of a world movement of eradicating poverty through
micro-lending. Replicas of the Grameen Bank model operate ii

Oil I-clmuiiy 1 7, 2009 Howard Wnluiiiul Ur spoke in
Scabrook Auditorium. In his presentation he stated that the
way for the US to maintain top world position, is for every
cliild to receive a basic education. Lee is the first black to cliair
the North CaroUna State Board of Education and was
appointed to the position in 2003 by Gov. Mike Easley. He
beUeves that education, beyond all other devices of human origin,
is the great equalizer and frees one from the chains of society. A
former university administrator, mayor and state legislator, Lee
cited the state's drop-out and high school graduation rates as
evidence for the need to do more in education. He felt that
college students and fraternal organizations could serve as
mentors and that technology would be vital in making student
more competitive. He also indicated that early childhood
programs could help address reading problems which teachers
report to be the biggest weakness of students in today's
classrooms. In closing Lee stressed that we can not rest on our
laurels because without education jobs and opportunities will
iilii'jys go to ollicrs.
