Joy Ridderhof was born on Mavch 30, 1903 in Los Angeles, California. At
the age of thivteen, she accepted Jesus Chvist as hev Savior. As she got oldey, Joy
began to Worry About johether oy not she would be able to attend school. One day,
however, she heard SOx. McQuilkin preach A message extitlea “Worry is Sia” and
Joy gave her situation to the Lova. Mivaculously, Goa provided SLZ5 a month
for Joy to enroll in Columbia Bible School, wheve she studied in hopes to be a

U

missionary in Africa. ln 19.25, Joy graduated from Columbia Bible School along

with tyoo other students in the fivst gvaduating class of CBS. Joy felt that the
Lovd was calling her to Sequcigalpa, Honduvas where she worked with the
Mavcala people for about six years. Her work theve was intervupted by her ojn illness which caused kev to vetuvn to California. During
that time she began making vecovds and soon “Spanish Gospel Recovaings” became Gospel Recovaings Incovpovatea. She traveled to
Mexico where she made seven hundved vecovadings in ninety-two different languages ov aidlects. One of kev co-workers, Stuart Mill,
helped Joy cveate a cavdboavd, hand-pomeved, vecova player, called Cava—JSalk. Gospel Recordings Incovpovated continued to grow Ana
expand. Soon Joy created Gospel Recova’s mission; “Jo provide the message in the heart \anguage of each tribe, tongue, and uation”. By
1964, Gospel Records had it's twenty-five year anniversary ana
had vecovded in 3, 109 different languages. Joy Riddevhof died
on December 19, 1984 after devoting 40 years of her life to the
Gospel of Chvist. Dv. Robertson McQuilkin said, “Joy was no
ordinary person. She was one with jog-fillea faith. She was a veal
pioneer because she Aid things others thought weve impossible. She
vecovded move languages than some people said existed. She jas
instrumental in developing nem ways of presenting the gospel”
Joday, Gospel Recovas continues the
work of Joy Riddevhof and has alveady
vecovded in 4, 500 languages from all

Of couvse, at that time, Chet had no idea that this group mould be Avamatically involved

. in his {utuve as a missionary. In 1974, Chet avaduated from CITA ana vetuvned to his
hometopn And family. Not long After he avaduated, he met and fell in love with Brenda Gardner, pho also planned to work as A linguist.
‘The two got married and in July of 1978 began doing training in Costa Rica. Chet pote these vemarkable movds in his diay: “Costa
Rica, September 13, 1978. The situation in Nicavagua is getting wovse. If Nicavagua falls, | guess the vest of Cenval America will, too.
Magbe this is just some kind of self-inflicted martyr complex, but | find this vecurving thought that perhaps God will call me to be
martyred for Him in His service in Colombia. | am willing”. By August of 1979, he was
staying at the Wycliffe outpost center in Colombia wheve Brenda vaised theiv Aauahters
Kana Ruth and Esther. While waiting for a missionary assignment to a specific tvibe of
Indians Chet worked two sepavate jobs to support the family. After being assigned to the
Cavijona Indians, Chet prepared to leave from the Aycliffe outpost. On January 19,
AGS, the night before he planned to depart, Chet was kidnapped by a team of M-19

who claimed to be undevcover CIA agents. He was held until the M-19 could print theiv % ; Hh ee 4 Wd
manifesto in the nemspaper which ovdeved President Reagan to make Wycliffe pull out of Colombia by February 19, 1984. America’s
media coverage of the kidnapping let the public know About Wycliffes mission of spreading the
gospel of Chvist and portvayed M-19 as cruel tevvovists. Thvough the tvageay, it was cleav
that the Lovd was in contvol as tis gospel was spread and He veceived all the glory. The
guerilla group shot Chet in the chest on Mavch 7, 1984 and left his body in an empty bus.
tHe was buvied next to an Indian in Colombia, South America. At his funeral, Jom Branks, a
