REGISTER OF ANCESTORS

REGISTER OF ANCESTORS

The Society of the Daughters of Holland Dames is unique
In that it accepts as members only women whose Ancestors
were born in Holland and came to America before 1700. This
limitation prevents its referring to the records of many illus-
trious men who served loyally under the Dutch Crown in this
country.

The men sent out by the " Dutch West India Company "
to the new Colony had offices awaiting them, while those who
followed in their wake waited years to have their abilities
recognized — indeed it was more often the second generation
that produced the most notable men.

To give its first " Record Book " a character in keeping with
that of the Society, the Editors have used the original Dutch
spelling of names of persons and places as far as possible, de-
parting from it only when the orthography itself varied with
the different periods of ancestral service.

Of the provinces mentioned In the Register of Ancestors the
following, enumerating them from north to south, are in Neder-
land, or what we call Holland: Gronlngen, Friesland, Drcnthc,
Overyssel ; North Holland, containing the cities of Amsterdam
and Haarlem; South Holland, containing Leyden and Rotter-
dam, Utrecht,  Gelderland,  Zeeland,  North  Brabant,  LImburg;
and the following are in what Is now Belgium, but was at one
time a part of Holland : West Flanders, East Flanders.

NIeuw Nederland comprised the territory between the Con-
necticut River on the east and the South River (Delaware) on
the south, and northward extended as far as the present city
of Albany, which was an Indian Trading Post In 161-1.

The Dutch West India Company Charter bears the date
1621. Fort Orange was built in 1623.

Beverwyck and Rensselaerswyck were so called from their
early settlement in 1637 until 1664, when the English took
possession and named the united settlements New Albany. The
city received its charter in 1686. When the Dutch recaptured
Nieuw Nederland, they renamed New York " Nieuw Orange,"
and the Fort, " Willem Hendrick." They also renamed New
Albany " Willemstadt," and gave the name of " Swaanenburg "
to Kingston.

Esopus bore its Indian name until Governor Stuyvesant
called it " Wildwyck " in 1661. When the English began their
rule, all names were Anghcised and this hamlet assumed the
name of Kingston, which it bears at the present time.

On Long Island, Breuckelen was the original name of Brook-
lyn (under the English rule, Brookland), Boswyck of East
Brooklyn, Waelboght (Wallabout) of the district on the East
River, Midwout of Flatbush, Middleburg of Newtown, Vlissingen
of Flushing, Amersfoort of Flatlands, 's Gravesande of Graves-
end, and Heemstead of Hempstead.

The Colony on the Delaware was called Suydt Rivier.
A word as to the significance of some of the Dutch titles of
offices mentioned throughout these records may be of interest.
A Schout was a Sheriff.

A Schout-Fiscal discharged the duties of Sheriff and At-
torney General.

Burgemeesters and Schepens were city magistrates who suc-
ceeded the " Nine Men " on the incorporation of Nieuw Amster-
dam.

Orphanmasters were officers appointed by the Burgemeesters
and Schepens to guard the interests of orphans and minor
children, and to administer their property. V. V. H.
