ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE

245 Clinton Avenue

Brooklyn, N. Y. 11205

212-6224697

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

Dear Members of the Class of 1 978 :

Do you remember the words:

I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you.

I love you not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me.

The theme of New Faces 1978 was friendship, and these lines from the Preface expressed in an amazingly
prophetic way the spirit of the class of 1 978.

In these final words to you, instead of dwelling on some of the external events of the years 1974-78, I
would like to try to capture what you have meant to St. Joseph's. Each of you has a special place in the life
and memory of some one faculty member, but for the class as a whole, the faculty stream of consciousness
might run something like this:

good students; interested, inquisitive; lively and involved socially ; a joyous spirit; enthusiastic and
creative; at home at the college; warm and cordial ; very much a group of individuals getting along
well together.

Three reflections of this spirit stand out: the folk group, which has so markedly enriched the liturgical life
of the College; the festive decorations in the halls at Christmas time. But if one event, one image can
capture the spirit, I think for all of us it was the beauty of your Junior Ring Day. The group effort, the
concern for each member of the class, the sense of past and present in the color slides, your joy in the rings
as symbols of the bond which exists among you and with us, the meaning of the liturgy, expressed with
special beauty and warmth— all revealed your understanding and appreciation of yourselves and of life.

We pray that through all of these experiences your years at St. Joseph's have given you confidence in the
Lord. Our words are from Isaiah:

I called you by name: you are mine.

Though the mountains leave their place and the hills be shaken,
My love shall never leave you nor my covenant of peace be shaken.
In joy you shall depart, in peace you shall be brought back.

Affectionately,

Sister George
