GENEALOGICAL NOTES

RELATING TO THE FAMILIES OF

Lloyd, Pemberton, Hutchinson, Hudson
and Parke.

T:

PREFACE.

The following genealogical notes, relating chiefly to the
families of Lloyd, Pemberton, Hutchinson, Hndson and
Parke were first compiled, in July, 1819, by James P. Parke,
and copied and added to, in 1877, by Townsend Ward, now
deceased, then Librarian of the Historical Society of Penn-
sylvania. The sources of genealogical information at that
time open to the student of family histor}^ as compared
with the present day, were insignificant, and it is a matter
of surprise that with such scant material at hand so valu-
able a record was made.

Mr. Ward states in his preface that the information
regarding the Lloyd family was " mostly from a document
sent by Francis Lloyd of Birmingham [England], on Sep-
tember 29, 1826, to Joseph P. Norris, of Philadelphia, and
which it is said was compiled from authentic records by
Charles Lloyd the second [of Dolobran], dated 1670."

The other data were gathered in much the same way,
by laborious research, from family archives.

Since 1877 vast numbers of records in England, Wales
and Pennsylvania have been unearthed, transcribed and
printed, and rare books, once obtainable only in England,
have been placed on the shelves of the Historical Society,
whilst the valuable collections of the Genealogical Society
of Pennsylvania have given us many church registers, and
thrown open thousands of wills for inspection at our leisure.
Many privately printed genealogies, also, have added to the
mine of wealth for this study.

These sources of information have been utilized for the
present work. Additions, in some instances, have been
made to the lines as given by Mr. Ward, and in other cases,
where portions of the lines inserted in the Parke- Ward
manuscript have been found printed in works easily acces-

sible to the public, they have sometimes been omitted, and
in their place a reference given to the book or books in
which they can tie found.

This is particularly so with the Welsh and English
descendants of the Lloyds of Dolobran, who are now so
numerous that a volume might be written about them. By
this system a brief but comprehensive genealogy, combined
with a genealogical index, is presented of all the descend-
ants of the families appearing on the title-page and some
others, and space is saved for valuable information, not
hitherto printed or at least readily accessible.

Great care has been exercised in comparing names and
dates, where jDossible, with original documents, and all
statements in the original manuscripts have been carefully
considered.

The reader's attention, however, is called to the fact
that authorities and original documents, frequently vary
as to dates of births, marriages and deaths, and that
transcribers and printers being human, are only capable of
that degree of accuracy where the percentage of error does
no harm. I have thought well to close this tiresome but
necessary introductory note with the lines quoted by Mr.
Ward in the preface to his original manuscript:

" Like leaves on trees the race of man is found,
Now green in youth, now withering on the ground.
Another race the following Spring supplies ;
They fall successive ; and successive rise ;
So generations in their course decay,
So flourish these, when those are parsed away."

Pope's Homer, II. 6, 180.

Thomas Allen Glenn.
Philadelphia, P'tbruary 1, 1898.

JLIogti of JBoloftran.

1. Celynin, of Llwytliarth, the first of this race who
settled in Montgomerysliire, fled there after having slain, in
single combat, the Mayor of Caermarthen. His lineage from
Aleth, "King," or Prince of Dyfed, is as follows: Aleth'
had UcHDRYD, who by Mared, daughter of Cadivor Vawr,
Lord of Blaen Cych, had Gwrqeney, who by Ales, daugh-
ter of Goronwy ap Einion, had Ierwerth, who by Eva,
daughter of Sir Aron
ap Rees, had Cynd-
DELW, who by Jane,
daughter of Gorwa-
reth, of Kemmes,
had RiRiD, who by
Gwaldus,^ daughter
of Richard, Lord of
Dinas Certhiu, had
the above Celynin.

It has been sug-
gested that Celynin
is probably identi-
cal with " Ceilnefilio
Cheugret " [i. e. Ce-
lynin, son of Ririd]
who appears as one
of the lay witnesses
to the foundation

iun ap Celynin {Sahk, a lu-goat , passant argent,

t/tref luiijs' hetuls, erased, argent,) — From
lianel in pew of Meivod Church.

' Aleth bore Azure, a chemm hdifeni three cocks ; Argent, which is a dif-
ferent coat from tliat used by his deeceudant, Celynin.

'' (Lewis Dwiin, vol. ii, p. 277.) But this is not accordant with the
Llwydiarth pedigree in Dwnn, vol. i, p. 294. There "Uwenllian, the daugh-
ter of Meredith ap Rhyddarch ap Tew<lwr Mawr, is stated to be the wife of
Celynin, and "Gwladys," to be his mother. It is said, however, in the Salis-
bury MSS. at Wyun.stay, that Ciwlady.s, the daughter of Ririd ap Cynwrig
Efell, was the mother of Celynin, and not the wife. This would account for
the poseessionof Llwydiarth.

charter of the Abbey of Ystrad Marchell, and although the
charter itself was of a much earlier date, yet the time of exe-
cution of the testing clause, to which the name is appended,
would correspond with Celynin's date.

How Celynin acquired Llwydiarth, from his mother or
by marriage, is still a mooted question. The authority of
the express statement of Lewis Dwnn that Celynin married
" Gwladus V. aeres Ririd ap Cynwrig Evell ag a ga vas
Llwydiarth Ymhowj's "(and obtained Llwydiarth in Powys),
can, we think, be safely relied upon ; and to reconcile it with
the statement elsewhere, made by the same Herald, that
Celynin married " Gwenllian v' Meredith ap Rhydderch ap
Tewdwr Mawr," it may be assumed that he married twice :
(1) Gwenllian and (2) Gw]ad3\s. Celynin, after his flight
to Montgomeryshire, became steward to Charleton, Lord
Powys. His eldest son and heir was:

IL EiNiON AP Celyxin, of Llwydiarth. John de
Charleton, Lord of Powys, granted unto tliis Einion, by the
designation of "Anian ap Kelynnin,"on the Thursday after
the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 14 Edward IIL [1340],
Weston in the Ville of Pennayrth, in Glas Meynoc. He
married tlie daughter of Adda ap Meyric, Rector of Meifod,'
a descendant of Brochwel Ysgytlirog, and by her had a son
who succeeded him, by name :

in. Llewelyn ap Einion, of Llwydiarth. He is
mentioned in a grant dated 7 Maj^, 7 Henry V., whereby
Edward de Charleton, Lord Powys, pardoned his (Llewelyn's)
grandson, GryfBth ap Jenkiu ap Llewelyn for complicity in
the rebellion of Owen Glendower. He married " Lleuca,
tlie daughter of Griffith ap Eden " (Edneved), Lloid, styled
" relide dicti Lleivehjn "' in the above grant. They had three
sons :

' The correctness of this statement has been questioned. See Monig. Cull.,
vol. xiv, p. 370, ami the objections there raised answered in llie same publi-
cation. Upon a carefid examination of the facts in the c;ise, tliere seems to be
no good reason for questioning it.

1. Jenkin ap Llewelyn,' styled in the same above men-

tioned grant " Jenkin ap Llewelyn, filii predicti
Llewelyn el Leuca pairis Griffiiii," and ancestor of
the Tal y Lyn branch, Merionethshire.

2. levau ap Llewelyn.

3. David ap Llewelyn, of Dolobran, of whom presently.

Llewelyn gave to his son, David, Dolobran and
Coedcowrid.

IV. David ap Llewelyn married twice ; by his fir.st
wife, Mary, the daughter of (Griffith Guch, Esq., he had a
son, Owen, who was ancestor of the Vauglians, of Glascoed,
and whose second son was probably David ap Owen,
Abbot of Ystrad Marchell, and afterwards Bishop of St.
Asaph, who died about 1512, and whose monument was in
the Cathedral of St. Asa[)h. David ap Llewelyn married
for his second wife, Medisis, daughter of Griffith Deuddwr,
Esq., of the Tribe of Brochwel Ysgythrog. He was suc-
ceeded by his eldest son :

V. Ievan Teg (or the Handsome), of Dolobran. He
married Maud, daughter of Evan Blayue}', of Castle Bla}'-
ney in Ireland, and had a son :

'Jenkin ap Llewelyn ap Einion, of Llwydiartli, m;irrieil (iwenevnr,
daugliter of Ievan Gethin ap Madog Cyfin, aud had : David ap Jenkin, who
married Janet, daughter of Ievan Goch ap Ievan Vaughan ap Ievan ap
lorwerth ap Adda, of Dolgoch, and had : Meredith ap David, wlin married
Maud, daughter of Meredith ap Griffith Derwas, of Nannau (see pedigree of
Rowland Ellis), and had : John ap Meredith, who married Gwenllian,
daughter of Ednyvet ap David a[i Howell ap Kinicjn (possibly of the line of
Ednowain ap Bradwen) and had : Hugh ap John, of Tal y Lyn (a parish in
the hundred — or C'omot — of Estimaner, Merionethshire, about eight miles
southwest of D61gelly) and had : Mary verch Hugh, who married David
AP Howell, of Llwyngwrill, Merionethshire. Her mother was Catherine,
daughter of Rhys ap David ap Ievan ap JackwB ap David ap Ievan. David
ap Howell had Hugh ap David, who, by Catherine, of Abergynolwyn, had :
Humphrey ap Huoh, of Llwyn-du, who, by Klizabeth, daughter of John
Powel, of Llanwddyn, had : Owen Humphrey, of Llwyn-du, ancestor to the
Humphreys, Owen, Ellis and other families of Pennsylvania.

'■'Some authorities give a second son, Ievan, who it is stated was ancestor
of (he Tal y Lyn family; liut it is evident tbat a confusion between the names
of Jenkin and Ievan has occurred.

10

VI. Owen, of Dolobkax, who was the first of the
family who took the surname of Lloyd, probably from Llwy-
diarth, the estate of his ancestor, Celynin. He married
Katherine, the daughter of Reynalt, son of Sir Griffith
Vaughan, Knight Banneret, of Agincourt, and had two sons
and one daughter. They were :

1. Evan, of Dolobran, of whom presently.

2. David, of Rhosvawr.

3. Ellen, m. John Grey.

VII. Evan Lloyd, of Dolobran, the eldest son, married
Gwenhwyvar, daughter of Meredith Lloyd, of Meivod, by
wliom he had :

1. David, of Dolobran, of whom presently.

2. John Wyun, of Dyffryn.

VIII. David Lloyd, of Dolobran (born 1523), the eldest
son, appears under the name of "DD. Lloidap leu'n {Evan)
ap Owen, Gentleman," on Grand .Juries, in the County of
Montgomery, 34 Henry VIII. [A. D. 1542]. He married,
first, Eva, daughter of Edward Price, of Eglusig, by whom
he had no issue ; and secondly, Eva, daughter of Evan
David Guch, son of Jenkiu Vaughan, of Bodfach, by whom
he had :

IX. David Lloyd, of Dolobran (born 1549). He
ap]jears in county Grand Juries in 8th, 19th, 20th, 23d and
25th of Elizabeth, and as "David ap DD. Lloyd, vf Dolobran,
Gentleman," in the 34th of Elizabeth. He married Ales,
daughter of David Lloyd, of Llanarmon Mynydd Mawr,
Esq., descended from Ririd Flaidd, Lord of Penllyn, and
had a son :

11

X. John Lloyd, of Dolobraii (born 1575), who mar-
ried his cousin Katharine, tlie daughter and coheiress of
Hunij)lire3' Wynn, of Dylfryn, son of tlie above named John
Wynn, of Dyflryn, by his wife Margaret, daughter of Sir
Roger Kynaston. " He kept his abode at Coedcowryd, and
wainscoted the parlour thereof and lived there in great
state, having twenty-four men with halberts to attend him
to Meivod Church, and placed them in his great pew under
the pulpit. He also bought Owen John Humphrey's estate
in Meivod." He appears as " Johes Lloyd, gen." on the county
Grand Jury, 8 James I., and as " Jokes Lloyd de Dolobran,
gen." 20 James I., and as " JoJies Lloyd, of Dolobran, Ar.," as
a grand juror or magistrate in 2nd, 4th and 9th Charles I.
He disappears from thelist of Justices of the Peace 14 Charles
I. He was succeeded by bis son :

XL Charles Lloyd (I.), of Dolobran (born 1613). He
married Elizabeth Stanley, daughter of Thomas Stanley, of
Knockin, in the County of Salop (son of Sir Edward Stanley,
son of Sir Foulk Stanley, son of Sir Piers Stanley, son of Sir
Rowland Stanley, brother of Lord Strange, of Knockin).
" He lived at Dolobran Hall, and enlarged the same by
adding to it the timber buildings on the north side thereof,
making the said hall's platform to resemble the figure of a
capital L."

There was previous to the year 17S0 an oak panel over
the fire-place of the old hall at Dolobran, upon which was
emblazoned the shield of Charles Lloyd.of fifteen quarterings,
impaling the Stanley arms with six quarterings in right of
his wife, Elizabeth Stanley. This panel was removed by
James Lloyd before he sold Dolobran Hall, and presented
to his relative Charles Lloyd, from whom it came to the
grandson of the latter, James Farmer Lloyd, of London,
who now owns it. The paternal coat, as quartered on this
shield, is that of Alcth, and not the one borne by Einion
ap Celynin, given supra, (,-harles Lloyd was esteemed one
of the most eminent genealogists and antiquarians of liis

time. He died in 1G57, and his burial is tlius entered in
Meivod Register :

"Burials, l Charles Lloyd, Esq., of Dolobran, ivas buried
1657. j 17 day of August."

His will was dated 17 June, 1G41. He had three sons:

1. Charles, b. 9 Dec, 1637, of Dolobrao ; the Quaker;

grarl. Oxford, M.D.

2. John, of Jesus College, Oxford, grad. M.D.; clerk iu

Chancery.

3. Thomas, Dep. Gov. Penna., of whom presently.

The numbers used to designate the descendants of the families here
mentioned, commence with tlie cliildren of Tliomas Lloyd and continue in
regular order, except wheie new ancestors are introduced. In the latter
cases, as witli the Welsh genealogy of the Lloyds, the numbering has been
omitted, asuiiueoe^sary, as the najiu-sare not repeated. An asterisk — thus * —
after a marriage indicates that the Hue is continued on in its regular order.

XII. Thomas Lloyd, third son of Charles Lloyd of
Dolobran, Montgomeryshire, and Elizabeth his wife, born at
Dolobrau, April 17,1640; died in Pennsylvania, Sept. 10,
1694. He married, first, Nov. 9, 1665, Mary, daughter of
Colonel Roger (or Gilbert) Jones, of Welshpool, Governor of
Dublin in reign of James II, who defeated the Marquis of
Ormond, in Ireland, August, 1649 (?). She died 1682, and
was the first person buried in Friends' Burial Ground,
corner of Fourth and Mulljerrv Streets, Pliiladelphia. [D.
Logan's MSS., 2, 218.]

He married, secondly, at New York, 1(j84, Patience
Story, widow, but had no issue by her. She survived him.
Thomas Lloyd joined Penn in the colonization of Pennsyl-
vania 1681-2, and was Deputy Governor of the Province
and President of the Council from 1684 to 1693. He had
graduated from Jesus College, Oxford, and studied medicine.

iHiit lUcmtrrton ,ifamilp.

I. William Pemhertox, who wiis born in the township
of Aspull, Wigan Parish, Lancashire, England, circa 1580, is
the first of this line concerning whom we liave any reliable
information. He was, probably, the son of A\'illium I'ember-
ton, of Wigan, whose inventory was filed at Chester in 1G02 ;
but this is uncertain. Lower, in his Patron ijmica Britannica,
states that the family name of Pemberton is derived from the
chapelry of that name in the parish of Wigan, in the hundred
of West Derby, Lancashire, and it is certain that Pember-
tons are found at a very early period as lords of the manor of
Pemberton, in Wigan, within a few miles of AspulL Of these
early Pembertons it will suffice to mention Adam de Pem-
berton, who was living in the reign of Richard L, and whose
son, Alan de Pemberton, .3 John, jiaid ten marks to have
seisen of his lands in Pemberton, and for his relief, etc.

Others of the name at a later date were : Adam de
Pemberton, Henry, son of Lawrence de Pemberton, Alan,
the son of Aldich de Pemberton, and another Adam ile
Pemberton, who w'as living 34 Edward L

The eldest branch of this line ended in co-heiresses,
who acquired the estates, but descendants of younger sons'
continued in the neighborhood of Wigan. If the Registei-
of the parish church of Aspull could be searched and the
wills of various Pembertons examined, the pedigree, no
doubt, could be carried nmch further back than that
William with whom we begin the Pennsylvania line, and
who was, doubtless, a descendant of those persons of the
name who appear earlier in the history of Lancashire. Mr.
Towusend Ward, on page 141 of his MS. Genealogy of the
Lloyd, Pemberton, Hutchinson and Kirkbride Families, says :

" After much research, all the particulars respecting its
[the Pemberton Family's] members that could be collected,
are comprised in an account of the family in MS. by J. P. P.

42

See also 3Iemoirs of Samuel Fothergill, by George Crosfield,
page 160, and The Friend, Vol. xxi, pp. 46, 61, et seq."

The information here given is from the above sources,
and from Friends' Miscellany, \(A. vii, p. 1 ; The Pemherton
Family (of New England), by Walter K. Watkins, Boston,
1892, The "Pemberton Papers," in Historical Society of
Pennsylvania, \o\. i, the publications of the Harleian
Society, London and Public Records.

William Pemberton, named above as the first of this
branch of the Pemberton family of whom we have any ac-
count, seems to liave been a man of considerable estate. By " a
lease for three lives," dated ?tlay 30, 162.5, it appears that a
messuage or cottage, and its " crofts or closures of land, gar-
dains, pastures, feedings," etc., in Aspull, were let to him by
Roger Pluudly, during the lives of Ralph, Alice and Marj-,
his children "and the survivors of them. Two j-ears later,
this lease was assigned by William to his son Ralph. Wil-
liam Pemberton married, Dec. 10, 1602, Ann , who

died Dec. 23, 16 12. He died at Aspull, Nov. 26, 1642.

Referring to the " Armorial Devices " of the Pember-
tons, Mr. Parke gives several coats of different families, as
mentioned in Burke's General Armory. He also speaks of
a seal used by John Pemberton, on a letter dated Woburn,
March 16, 1789, viz.: Quarterly, first and fourth, Ar. a chevron
vert between three buckets sa. Second and third, Ar. three dragons'
heads erect, covped. Crest : A drar/nn's head erect, couped.
Motto: Ncc iemere nee tiniidc.

An ancient steel seal in the possession of Henry Pember-
ton, Esq., of Philadelphia, bears the following arms : Argent,
a chevron sable {instead of vert) between three water bougets of tlie
second, hooped and handled or. Crest: A dragon's head
couped, proper.^

' It is curious to note that there was at least one other family of Pem-
berton in Pennsylv.nnia, whose connection, if any, with the Pembertons umler
consideration does not appear. John Pemberton was born in Glasgow, Scot-
laud, 1717, and his wife in Newton Clauebois, Ireland ; they settled at Abington
and were Friends. They had issue, several children, who-are believed to have
left descendant.s.

(396) Ralph Pbmbkkton, .sou of William and Ann,
born in the township of Aspull, Wigan Parish, County of
Lancaster, Jan. 3, 1611; died in Pennsylvania, in the
American Plantations, July 17, 1687. Pie was a malster,
and a man of considerable property. He seems to have
been well thought of, and trusted in Aspull and its neigh-
borhood.

In 1673, he was living at Boulton in the Moors, Wigan,
and in that year and in 1674 he rendered an account of
money distributed to the poor (Friends?) of Aspull.

Ralph Pemberton married, June 7, 1648, Margaret,
daughter of Thomas Seddon, of Warrington. She died Sept.
2, 1655. The Seddon family is an old one in Wigan, and
in the neighboring parishes of Leigh and Rochdale, and
the Seddons of Seddon Hall were noted non-conformists.

Ralph Pemberton accompanied his son, Phineas, to
Pennsylvania in 1682. (See Phineas Pemberton.)

sylvania in the ship " Submission," from Liverpool, 5th of
7 mo., 1682, and arrived at tlie Choptank, Maryland, 2d of
9 mo., 1682, thus making the voyage in fifty-eight days
from port to port. (See Publications of the Genealogical Society
of Pennsylvania, No. 1, Vol. i, page 7. He married (1st),
■Jan. 1, 1677, Phebe, daughter of James Harrison, of Stiall-
Greeu, Cheshire, by Anne Heath, his wife, whom he
married 5 of 1 mo, 1655. James Harrison was son of
Immaiiuel, or Emanuel, Harrison, who died Aug. 8, 1658,
and Agnes, his wife. They had issue : Anne, James, above
mentioned, Robert, Jane, who is said to have married
William Yardley, Mary, who married Joseph Endon, and
Jiad issue: (Mary, m. John Clark, Margaret, m. John Wal-
ker), Margery.

James Harrison, who died Oct. (i, 1687, married, as
stated, Anne Heath, who was born Feb. lo, 1624, and died
Mar. 5, 1690. They had Phebe, born April 7, 16(10, who, as
we have seen, married Phineas Pemberton, and died Oct.
30, 1696 ; Job, born June 20, 1662 ; died an infant, before
1665, and some others who all died before 1665. James
Harrison and Agnes Harrison, his mother, came on the
"Submission," 1682.

Phineas Pemberton married (2d), May IS, lii99, Alice,
daughter of Robert Hodgson of Burlington, N. J., by whom
he had no children. She married (2d), 1704, Thomas Brad-
ford, had issue, and died Aug. 28, 1711.

The other children of Robert Hodgson were: Robert,
married 1697, Sarah , and had issue (Robert, Eliza-
beth and Marcus), Mary and a daughter who married

Cook.

Phineas Pcmbei'ton, as well as his father and kinsmen,
was a member of the Society of Friends and was frequently
imprisoned and fined. A full account of their sufi'erings in
England will be found in the books and MSS. above referred
to. The Pembertons settled in Bucks County. Both the
Perabertons and Harrisons held considerable land in that
County. James Harrison's purchase was 5,000 acres.

Sevoral of this family removed to America in 1724,
and settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania. They had
then bceome members of the Society of Friends. Mr. \\'ard
says :

"All the particulars respectin<^ this fanuly, thal could bo
gathered, are comprised in 'A Short Account of the Parke
Family,' by J. P. P., June 19, 1824. Efforts wore made,
when at Downingtown, in the years 1808, 1814, and 182.5, to
add particulars to the genealogy, but as these were chiefly
obtained from the recollections of Jane Parke, they may
not be depended on as entirely accurate." Henry Drinker
Riddle, in "a short account of the Parke Family," page 39
d scq., writes : " Thomas Parke, a member of the Society of
Friends, then in Ireland as a resident, — but whether his
progenitors had come from England is uncertain. He
appears, ]>robably, to have been a farmer, and in the year
1720 owned some land in Ballilean, Ballanghmore, and
Coolisnactah." "All of the family excepting Mar}', the first,
and Susanna, the third child, on May {sic!) 21, 1724, em-
barked at Dublin on the ship 'Sizurah' of Whitehaven,
Jeremiah Cowman, commander, bound to Whitehaven and
thence to Philadelphia." They arrived in Delaware B;iy,
21 Aug., (sic!) 1724; lived for a time in Chester and then
removed to Chester county, Thomas Parke having purchased
a farm of 500 acres in East Cain Township, Dec. 30, 172.5,
There is said to have been a grant of arms to this family by
Sir William Segar, Garter King at Arms, 1618, viz: Sable,
on a fosses engrailed ar., between three hinds trippant or
as many torteaux, each charged with a pheon of the second.
CuEST : On a mount vert, paled in ar. a fox paly of four, or
and ar. Motto : Providentix me committo.

The MS. of Townsend Ward continues tlie Parke lines briefly, and tlie
families of Puultney, Williams, Edge, Evans, Mason, McConnell, Powell, Bid-

of tb.ese lines have been printed, it is thought unnecessary to continue the
Parke Genealogy beyond the poiut of connection with the Pemberton family.

family, although it is included in the title-page. As a fairly full genealogy
of the Kirkbrides is given in Family Portraiture, and in Bordcntoini and En-

omitted from this work. A pedigree of tlie Staceye Family, from which a
