FAMILY   RECORD. 


Capt.  WiLLiAMi  GERRISH,  the  progeni- 
tor of  probably  all  who  bear  the  Gerrish  name 
in  this  country,  was  born  in  Bristol,  Somerset- 
shire, England,  August  20th,  1617,  where  he 
is  said  to  have  received  a  mercantile  education 
in  the  house  of  Percival  Lowle  (now  written 
Lowell)  &  Co.  He  came  to  New  England 
as  early  as  1639  and  settled  that  year  in 
Xewbury,  Mass.  (See  Coffin's  History  of 
Newbury) ;  was  the  first  Captain  of  the  mili- 
tary band  in  that  town,  and  Representative  in 
1650  to  '54.  He  married  first,  Joax:n^a,  widow 
of  John  OUver,  of  Xewbury,  and  daughter  of 
Percival  Lowle,  his  former  employer  in  Eng- 
land, April  17,  1645,  who  died  June  14th, 
1677,  aged  58.  He  removed  to  Boston  1678, 
and  there  married  Anx,  widow  of  John 
Manning;  w^as  the  owner  of  No.  3  Long- 
Wharf,  where  he  carried  on  business. 


At  the  Semi-centennial  anniversary  meeting 
of  the  town  of  Boston,  March  14,  1686,  Capt. 
Gerrish  opened  and  closed  the  exercise  with 
prayer.  He  died  at  his  son  Benjamin's  house, 
Salem,  Mass.,  Aug.  9,  1687.

William,  born  June  6,  1648  ;  was  a  physician    \ 
in  Charlestown,  Mass.,  where  he  died. 

Joseph,  born  March  23,  1649;  died  Jan.  6, 
1720.  Graduated  at  Harvard  College  1669  ; 
married  Ann,  daughter  of  Maj.  R.  Wal- 
dron,  of  Dover,  X.  H. ;  was  a  minister  in 
Wenham,  Mass. 

Bp:njamix,  born  Jan.  31,  1651 ;  died  April  2, 
1713;  was  Collector  of  his  Majesty's  Cus- 
toms at  Salem,  Mass. 

Elizabeth,  born  Sept.  20,  1654;  died  Xov. 
19,  1678.  Married  Capt.  Stephen  Green- 
leaf,  of  Newbury,  Mass.,  Oct.  23,  1676 

Moses,  (Col.) :  born  May  9,  1656;  died  Dec. 
4,  1694.     Lived  in  Newbury,  Mass. ;  mar- 


ried  Sept.  24, ,  Jane,  daughter  of  Rev. 

Henry  Sewell,  and  sister  of  Chief  Justice 
Sewell,  of  Mass.  She  was  born  at  Brade- 
sly,  Eng.,  Oct.  25,  1659,  and  died  Jan.  29, 
1717. 

Mart,  born  April  1,  1658;  married  Dr.  John 
Dole,  of  Newbury,  Mass.,  Oct.  23,  1676. 


Child  of  Ann. 

Henry,  born  in  Boston,  March  21,  1679; 
died  without  issue. 

J0HN2,  Capt.  (WM.i,  Capt.)  ;  married  in 
1665  or  1666,  Elizabeth,  daughter  of  Maj. 
Richard  Waldron,  of  Dover,  X.  H.,  where 
he  settled  in  1666;  in  1672  was  appointed 
Capt.  of  the  Militia;  in  1683  was  chosen 
High  Constable;  in  1684  was  member  of 
the  Special  Assemblv  convened  by  Gov. 
Canfield ;  1689  and  1690  Representative 
from  Dover  to  the  General  Assembly  under 
Gov.  Andros;  1692  a  Royal  Councillor  of 
N.  H. ;  1699  appointed  Assistant  Justice  of 
the  Superior  Court  of  the  State  ;  was  a 
merchant  and  farmer.     His  children  were :

of  Portsmouth,  by  whom  he  had  six  chil- 
dren :  Nathaniel,  born  in  Berwick  and 
died  there  in  1752;  William; —  Charles 
came  to  Portland,  or  Falmouth,  about  1748  ; 
George  settled  in  Boston;  Richard; — 
Bridget. — 

Paul,  born  1674 ;  lived  and  died  in  Dover, 
N.  H.,  June  6,  1743. 

Timothy,  born  1683  ;  settled  in  Kittery ;  died 
1756. 

Sarah,  born  1680;  taken  captive  by  the  In- 
dians when  her  grandfather's  garrison  was 
attacked  ;  restored  to  her  friends  after  many 
sufferings,  and  died  of  fever,  July  29, 1697. 

Benjamin,  born  1681 ;  settled  in  Boston  and 
died  at  an  advanced  age. 


William,  born  1683  ;  settled  in  Somersworth, 
Avhere  he  died. 

JoAXXA,  born  1685  ;  married  Cbas.  Chauncy 
1709. 

Elizabeth,  born  1687;  possibly  married 
Rev.  John  Wade,  of  Berwick,  Me.,  but 
record  not  clear  on  this  point. 

MAJOR  CHARLES  GERRISH^  (Son  of 
Capt,  Xathaniel,  Grandson  of  John,  of 
Dover,  and  a  Great-grandson  of  William,  of 
Xewbury)  was  bora  in  Berwick,  in  1718, 
came  to  Portland  (or  Falmouth)  in  1748, 
and  was  the  first  settler  of  the  town  of  Dur- 
ham (then  Royalsborough),  and  for  several 
years  of  its  earliest  history  his  name  appeared 
on  the  records  as  Moderator  of  the  Plantation 
meetings.  He  married  Mary  Frost,  and  had 
the  following  family :

George,  born  June  16,  1753.

in  Lewiston.

there  on  a  farm.     Four  children.
