The  greatest  difficulty  which  promoters  of  under- 
takings of  this  character  have  to  contend  with,  is  that  of 
interference   by   parties  actuated  by  sp<  ive  motive 

who  spring  up  out  of  factions  of  the  d>  dy  to 

e     advantage     of     thei       i   lationship,     which     often 
Lingers,  if   not  entirely  destroys,  all    prospects  of  su 
cess:   an  1    herein   lies  the  secret  of  so   many   failures 
recover  remote  inheritances,  which  otherwise  might 
been  c  led  and  enjoyed  by  the  heirs.     The  writer  has 

hid  many  years'  experience  in  m attars  (^  this  character. 
From  1862  to  1867  as  attorney  a.  ■■•■-.  and  war  claim 
agent  continuously  so  engaged,  and  from  1867  to  1887  at 
interv  i  -  the   prosecution   of  pensions  (and
