UNIVERSITY
To the Cla
Df 1989:
A very wise man once wrote that the goals of a university are
threefold: first, to expand the horizons of its students; second,
to sharpen their intellectual skills; and, third, to deepen their
understandings about the world of which they are a part. During
the past several years, the faculty and staff of Johnson C. Smith
University has attempted to meet these goals for you and we trust
that you leave the university a far more learned, compassionate
and prepared person than when you entered.
Your class has been privileged to have been able to prepare
yourselves for the leadership demands of the 21st Century. You
are a part of a world that grows smaller daily - and in which
men are finally beginning to understand the interrelationships
between nations and people. Although our civilization has made
much progress toward the twin goals of equality and opportunity
in recent years, there is still much to be done. Thus, we hope
that we have prepared you well to lead our society forward; to
dream bold dreams; and to commit yourselves to assisting those
less fortunate than you.
As you leave Alma Mater, please know that you have our every best
wish for success. I also hope that you will always remeber that
as one of our best and brightest, you are one of the select
persons described by the late Black scholar, Dr. W.E.B. DuBois as
the "talented tenth." This implies that because of your special
opportunities, you also have special responsibilities. Use your
talents well and wisely for the betterment of mankind and you
will receive rewards and satisfactions beyond your wildest
dreams. Finally, as you pursue your dreams and experience the
success you so richly deserve, please be mindful of the words of
the remarkable young talent, Bobby McFerrin, who urges us to "be
happy."

IN MEMORY
OF
MRS. OSSIEBELLE DIXON
Mr. Herbert "GEE" Gidneij has been a friend to the
students of Johnson C Smitli for many years. He is
available for us at times when he did not have to be. He
has been there for the yearbook staff on many, many
occasions. For these reasons and many more the Gold-
en Bull staff 1988-89 would like to dedicate its 61st
edition to Mr. Herbert Gidney.
Love,
Belinda Williams
To the Class of
1989
If you will, I would like to ask you to take a brief journey with me down memory lane. Think back to alien
We all were enteringfreshmen. We were subject to long lines, new faces, and food that was not that bad, but
NOTHING like at home. Yet, we made it through. After getting our requirements under our belts, we had to
make the decision to affect the rest of our lives: a major. Once you think about it, this included a great deal
more than signing a slip of paper. Careers must include excitement, chances for advancement, and
opportunities to do what we do best. Yet. we made it through this too. Then another set of requirements
were thrown our way. Whether your major was English, Mathematics, or Business Administration you had
to successfully complete an array of related, but many times complicated courses. Our instructors got on
our last nerve, the assignments appeared outrageous at points, and we all have wondered whether it was
worth it. The answer of course is YES because we are here, the class of 1989 and we have made it through.
Now, as we enter the real world — one of prejudices and hardships, we still ask questions regarding our
competence and endurance. Eet me reassure you oj something my dear Senior Class. What you went
through at Johnson C. Smith University is NOTHING like what lies ahead and unless you govern yourselves
accordingly and conduct yourselves as the adults you are, you won't make it; unless you put an end to
jealousy, back stabbing, and unnecessary competition you will not last fifteen minutes after graduation. I
use to impatiently await my maturation for I knew all the childish ways of my high school peers would
cease. However, I was sadly mistaken. You all arc beautiful people with more to give than you take, yet
sometimes you do just the opposite'. Praise yourselves! You have a tremendous accomplishment with you
that no one can strip away. It is YOU who made the sacrifice to attend college and attempt at all costs to
better yourself . . . no one, but you. So by all means, pat yourself on the back, but after you do, 'CHECK
YOURSELE" and do some soul searching. You may just like what you find. Best Wishes and Congratula-
tions.

A Message From Tracy Chamblee
SGA President
Dear Fellow Smithies
It has been an extreme pleasure to be your student body
president for the 1988-89 academic year. As positive young
African-Americans we all possess dreams and wealthy am-
bitions. These dreams eventually turn into goals and objec-
tives which are attainable. The only ingredient that you
need for success is belief in yourself.
To the graduating class of 1989 I wish the best of luck.
Remember to always believe in yourself when it seems that
the world is on your shoulders. Remember that you re-
ceived not only an academic education but an education on
life during your years at good old J.C.S.U. Remember that
once you achieve a goal in life allow no one to take it away
from you.
For some the road is just beginning while it is ending for
others. To the Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors your
dreams are just beginning. Dream to lead and you will lead.
Dream to excel and you will excel. Have faith in the creator
and he will see you through. Become the trailblazers for our
community and our race. Remember we are the future!!
In closing I would like to thank my executive board and
advisor. Without your support I would have been like a leaf
in the wind. Thank you to the students, faculty, and staff
that make up a J.C.S.U. family which is unique, loving, and enriched with growth of this great institution.
Thank you to my mom who exemplifies strength, sacrifice and determination and from whom I draw
inspiration. Finally friends I would like to leave a thought about true friends. False friends are like
autumn leaves found everywhere. True friends are like diamonds genuine and rare. Never forget or be
ashamed of the road that got you there. Remember, that no matter where I go or whatever I do, I will al-
ways be loyal to J.C.S.U.
Sincerely Yours,
Tracy Chamblee,
SGA Pres.

Alpha Kappa Alpha is the oldest Greek letter organization established in America by Black college
women. It is rather a significant and inspiring reflection of a minority group in a changing culture. Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated was founded in 1908 at Howard University located in Washington,
DC. In its earliest years, Alpha Kappa Alpha became a symbol of the aspiration of able young women to
develop their full potentials in an atmosphere of friendship and mutually supportive stimulation to
excellence.

ALPHA OMICRON
From inception. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., paid homage to our African heritage — symbolized
by the Sphinx.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first inter-collegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for Black
college men, was founded on December 4, 1906 at Cornell University. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.,
was the only Black Fraternity born on an Ivy League University. The Seven visionary founders at Cornell,
labored in years of severe economic struggle and racial conflict in the United States. Despite these odds
the fraternity succeeded, setting the highest standards that all men should follow, Scholarship, Leader-
ship, Manly Deeds and Love for all mankind (peace).
Alpha Omicron is the oldest chapter in North Carolina, being founded on May 4, 1923. The Men Of Al-
pha Omicron truly uphold the aims and ideas of Alpha. These gentlemen are actively involved in Student
Government, Resident Life and various organizations on, as well as off campus. These Distinctive men
represent leadership, scholastic achievement and a love for all mankind. Their tenacious qualities stand
above all others. Their ability to hold the award for the highest G.P.A. at Johnson C. Smith University, tru-
ly proves their commitment to excellence.

The "Bull 89" turned out to be fulfilling and rewarding in so many ways. It made
my staff and I realize that with hard work and perseverance anything can be
accomplished I have learned a lot about myself and my capabilities I have
learned from my father that patience and endurance is needed to succeed in life. I
would like to thank my mother for all of the love and dedication she filled my life

In closing Ed like to thank the J. C.S.U. family and especially the "Bull 89"staff,
