BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE

SOCIETY

QUEEN VICTORIA STREET, LONDON

1912

BEITISH AUD rOREI&I BIBLE SOCIETY.

This Society was formed on March 7, 1804, with
the sole object of circuUiting the Word of God
throughout the world. Since then, above two hun-
dred and thirty millions of Bibles, Testaments, and
Portions have been issued by it in four hundred and
thirty-two languages and dialects. Many of these
had not previously been reduced to writing. In this
work the Society has been aided by almost all sections
of Christ's Church, by the leaders and friends of
Christian enterprise and missions, and by scholars
and philologists, foreign as well as British.

All parts of the world have felt its influence. It
has agents, colporteurs and depots in most countries
of the world. It is the handmaid of all Protestant
Missionary Societies among the distant nations of the
earth. Its own work extends to regions which they
do not reach.

At home, schools and hospitals, prisons and refor-
matories, railway-stations and hotels, the army and the
navy, the poor and the blind, are supplied with the Holy
Scriptures largely through its agency. Public and
social movements, international exhibitions, emigra-
tions, wars, fires, floods, and the like, are regarded as
so many opportunities to introduce God's Word into
new channels and let it speak to fresh hearts.

Wherever it goes and in whatever version, the
Bible can still awaken the conscience and purify the
life. For through it the Almighty Spirit reveals that
message of Divine Love which enlightens the mind,
touches the heart, curbs the passions, and makes " wise
unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus ".
The call is urgent to speed its errand by voice and
effort, by gifts and prayers. Multitudes are still
without the Saviour's words in their own tongue.

PREFACE.

This little book presents to the eye specimens of the
varied languages and characters in which the British
and Foreign Bible Society has promoted the transla-
tion, printing, or distribution of the Holy Scriptures,
complete or in part. The idea of it was taken from
samples of Acts 2. 8 in many languages and types,
issued in 1855, or earlier, by Mr. W. M. Watts, to
advertise the scope of his printing office in Crown
Court. He granted the Society the use of his texts for
its own purpose. Its edition of 1863 contained the
above verse in 91 languages and some 30 varieties of
character.

After a time the verse was changed to St. John 3. 16
in all cases in which that Gospel had been published.
Whenever the verse quoted is different, the passage
shown is specially defined.

The edition of 1904 has been current for eight years.
It contained 403 specimens — 317 being St. John 3. 16.
Of these, 358 were distinct languages or dialects ; and
45 were verses of the same veision printed in other
characters to meet the needs of a section of a popula-
tion. For instance, to suit readers in different parts
of the Turkish Empire, the same Turkish Bible is
issued in Arabic, in Greek, and in Armenian characters.
A sample of each of the three was given. The present
edition contains 498 specimens. They illustrate 432
varieties of language, or 74 more than in the last one.
There are also 66 examples of reduplications in some
other variety of written characters. The quotations
are St. John 3. 16 in 385 cases.

For the first time, the book now exhibits a specimen
of every one of the languages or dialects enumerated
in the Table given in the last Annual Brport issued
by the Society preceding its compilation. — [See the
Annual Bcport for 1911, pp. 467-485.] Several of the
versions are no longer in print, or in circulation, as
may be seen by turning to the Alphabetical Index

IV

PKEFACE

which follows the specimens. Some further items of
interest will be fomid in the Appendices.

Of the 432 languages and dialects illustrated by
these specimens, 75 belong to Europe as their original
or chief home ; 156 to Asia ; 107 to Africa ; 26 to
N. America ; 6 to S. America ; and 62 to Oceania.

The whole Bible has been issued in 107 of them ;
the New Testament in 102 more ; and at least one
book of the Bible in the remaining 223. Each year,
however, adds to the total number of translations ;
and varies the figures which define the number of
tongues in which the whole Bible, a New Testament, or
only one or more Portions, exist. While this edition
has been passing through the press, the Society has
taken in hand the issue of first translations of a book or
more of Holy Scripture in the following nine additional
languages : —

Europe (2)
Asia (4)

Africa (2)
Oceania (1)

Romany of E. Europe

„ of S. Germany
Beta (Land Dyak)
Laka (China)
Lakher (NE. Assam)
Lisu (China)
Dabida (Taita District)
Limba (W. Africa)
Kiwai (N. Guinea)

St. Mark
St. Luke
St. John, Acts
St. Mark
St. John
St. Matthew
Four Gospels
St. Luke
St. Mark

Correspondence is in progress respecting translations
in some twenty other languages or dialects with a view
to their publication.

Notwithstanding editorial care, and the excellent
work of the Oxford University Press, mistakes will,
no doubt, be found. If a rendering is thought faulty,
the date appended may show that the verse quoted
comes froin an early translation, which may not have
been rejDroduced. Ed. prefixed to a date indicates the
l^articular edition from which the text is taken, and in
most cases the latest revised version of the verse.
