DEDICATION
Ronald B. Mack, M.D.
Anyone who believes that Renaissance men do not
exist today obviously has not met Ronald Mack,
M.D. A physician, an author, a scholar, and a teacher.
Dr. Mack is a man admired for his dedication and
hard work. He is loved by his students for his capti-
vating sense of humor. His greatest talent, however,
is the ability to take otherwise dry material and
bring it to life so that learning becomes easy and
pleasurable.
Dr. Mack has strong roots in his home state of
Illinois. After spending his younger days in Chicago,
he entered the Navy and served as a Pharmacist's
Mate Third Class. He later returned to Chicago and
earned his B.S. and M.D. from Loyola University,
graduating in 1957. Internship at Cook County hospi-
tal and residency in Pediatrics at Loyola followed.
In 1957, Dr. Mack entered private practice. He did
some moonlighting during this time, but not at the
local Emergency room. (Good positions were hard to
find!) Rather, he served as the Pediatric Consultant
for Primates at the Brookfield Zoo. From 1972 to
1975, Dr. Mack served as the Academic Director and
Chairman of the Division of Pediatrics of MacNeal
Memorial Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois. Also during
these years Dr. Mack and his wife Marcia were rais-
ing their four children.
In 1975, Dr. Mack came to Winston-Salem. He
worked with the Physician Assistant training
program for a year and a half. Then he assumed his
present position with Bowman Gray, teaching at
Reynold's Health Center. It is there that he
flourishes making the mundane fascinating for us,
his students. He comes in contact with every student
who goes through Bowman Gray, guiding us
through pediatric evaluation and diagnosis, as well
as teaching us to assume nothing.
In additon to his work in Pediatrics, Dr. Mack
pursues a strong interest in toxicology. This interest
combines with a flair for writing, and a knowledge
of history, the arts, and literature. The end product
of this is a series of articles on poisoning and drug
abuse which are both informative and entertaining.
These are published regulary in the North Carolina
Medical Journal and Contemporary Pediatrics.
Dr. Mack's activities extend beyond the borders of
Winston-Salem. He is one of six members of the
Committee of Accident and Poison Prevention of the
American Academy of Pediatrics. He is the
Chairman of the N.C. Medical Society's Committee
on Drug Abuse and Pharmacy, as well as Chairman
of the Committee on Accidents and Childhood
Poisoning of the N.C. Chapter of the American
Academy of Pediatrics. He is also involved with the
American Association of Poison Control Centers,
and is a reviewer for Pediatrics.
Dr. Mack has received numerous honors in the
past, including the Clinical Teaching Excellence
Award given by the medical students and the
Teacher of the Year Award given by the P. A.
students. The Class of 1986 is proud to add to those
laurels the dedication of the year's edition of the Gray
Matter. We salute you.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION
Richard Janeway M.D.
Richard Janeway, M.D., has served as Dean of the
Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest
University for the last 14 years. Under Dr. Janeway 's
leadership, the school's faculty has more than
doubled in number, research grants have increased
dramatically, and the school has achieved a national
reputation for excellence. In the preceding 1985-86
academic year, Dr. Janeway was named Executive
Dean and Chief Executive Officer of the medical
school. Dr. Fairfield Goodale subsequently assumed
the position of Dean.
Dr. Janeway, a native of California, holds an A.B.
degree from Colgate University and an M.D. degree
from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also
did his internship. Following military service. Dr.
Janeway came to Bowman Gray as a National In-
stitute of Health trainee, and completed his
residency in neurology in 1966. Dr. Janeway was
named the Markle Scholar for the years 1968 to 1972.
During this time he progressed from assistant
professor to full professor in neurology. In 1971 Dr.
Janeway succeeded Dr. Manson Meads as Dean of the
medical school.
Dr. Janeway is active on a national level in plan-
ning and improving health care delivery and medi-
cal education. He continues to be heavily involved
with the AAMC, having served as Chairman of that
body from 1984 to 1985.
Since 1983, Dr. Janeway has been Vice President
for Health Affairs for Wake Forest University. In
this capacity and as Executive Dean, Dr. Janeway 's
leadership will still be felt as he guides this institu-
tion and keeps it on the cutting edge of medical
practice. We, the students of Bowman Gray, offer
our thanks, our appreciation, and our respect for a
job well done.

often through a parent involved in the field.

The Early Years
Looking back, it seems like only yesterday when
we set foot upon the path that led us to Bowman
Gray. Pause with us as we try to recapture some of
those memories common to us all. These were
times mixed with hope, anxiety, joy and
challenge.

The aspiring youg practitioner took great delight
in receiving his first stethoscope for Christmas.
He auscultated everything in sight.
Many long hours spent in science labs provided
the discipline later needed in learning medicine.
Getting In
The interview was a very anxiety-producing situa-
tion.
Would it help if I got on my knees?
The acceptance letter was a cause for great celebra

Why would anyone
name a bank Wachovia?
When Moravian settlers first came to Piedmont North Carolina
in 1752, the lush countryside reminded them of the Wachau Valley
in Europe. So they named their tract of land "Wachau" or in
English, "Wachovia."
One of the communities they established was Salem. And
in 1879 the Bank of Salem moved to the thriving community
of Winston. Under a new charter, they needed a new name.
And like their ancestors who had named the land, the bankers
chose the name Wachovia.
That small
Wachovia office *
was the first of
over 200 North
Carolina offices
statewide, each
one a hometown
bank in every
respect.
And for over
100 years, we've
been proving our-
selves as unique
as our name.

Of all the places we fly to (and

destination is the one pictured here.
Home.
But you might know it better
as North Carolina. (And if you don't,
we can help you get better acquainted,
since we're serving more of that state
than any other airline.)
North Carolina and flying go
back a long way. All the way to Kitty
Hawk in 1903. North Carolina and
Piedmont don't go back quite that far.
Just to 1948.
It's beautiful country. And the
people are hard working and friendly.
(We should know, we employ about
8,300 North Carolinians.)
And we'll always be proud to

ACK NOWLEDGEME NTS
The compilation and publication of the 1986 Gray Matter involved far more people than just those recognized in the
STAFF section. I would like to offer my thanks and appreciation to the following people for their help in making this
year's edition of the yearbook a memorable volume:
Jack Dent, for his photography,
AV Services, for being organized and helpful in getting photos,
June May, for her support, good taste, and helping to tie loose ends together,
Tyler Cox, for helping us update old photos,
JoAnn Thomas, for going above and beyond whenever we needed her,
Hunter Publishing, for a great finished product,
Jimmy Simon, M.D., for giving me the facts about Dr. Mack,
Robert Prichard, M.D., for use of his medical art text,
George Limpert, M.D., for getting us off on the right foot,
and
The Class of 1986, for responding to memos, supplying photos, being creative, and creating a lot of good
for us all.
