We are proud to

dedicate

the 1996 Gray

Matter to:

Dr. Jimmy
L. Simon

For the past twenty-one years , the third year pediatrics rotation at Bowman Gray has become known for one thing
— the opportunity to become "Simonized". Whether you loved the rotation or hated it, you came away no worse
from the experience and usually a great deal better. Though you learned to dislike your beeper during this rotation,
Simon rounds were the perfect opportunity to learn the attention to detail, thoroughness and punctuality that it takes
to become a good physician in any discipline. For many former students Dr. Simon and the third year pediatrics
rotation are one and the same.

Since his graduation from the University of California School of Medicine at San Francisco in 1955, the teaching
of pediatrics has been Dr. Simon's life work. While serving as a Captain in the United States Air Force, Dr. Simon
began his teaching career at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine. Later he further honed his teaching
abilities while serving as a Deputy Chairman for the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical
Branch at Galveston. In 1974, students at Bowman Gray became the recipients of numerous years of teaching
experience when Dr. Simon accepted the position as Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and moved to
Winston-Salem with his wife Marilyn and his children Kent and Nancy.

Though he is best known to students because of his teaching style, Dr. Simon is well recognized and well re-
spected in the field of pediatrics for his involvement in affairs important to pediatricians. Among his many activities,
since 1972, he has served as a member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education as a Pediatric
Specialist Site Visitor. In addition , he is a member of the Council on Pediatric Education of the American Academy
of Pediatrics and has served as its chairman since 1993.

Following his retirement as the Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics in December, 1995, the education of
students at Bowman Gray and throughout the nation continues to be a top priority. He has accepted the position of
Chairman of the Pediatric Education Task Force which will set the educational agenda for the teaching of pediatrics
for the next fifteen years. He will also continue to "Simonize" continuing classes of Bowman Gray students as a
professor of pediatrics at Reynolds Health Center.

We are proud to dedicate the 1996 Gray Matter to Dr. Jimmy Simon.

Bob, Sherri, Audrey, Gabrielle (god-daughter), Andrew, and Allison

For four years you have watched us mature as individuals and as a group
until now, thanks to your support and guidance we are ready to follow not only in
your footsteps but also to blaze new trails of our own.

You have set the example by word and deed of the kind of physician that we
shall all strive to be. Since you began your residency training at Bowman Gray in
1982 you have become an integral part of the tradition of academic excellence upon
which this institution was founded. This is evidenced by your many professional
activities, appointments, and numerous teaching awards given by BGSM residents,
Physician Assistant's and in 1992 your National Award for Excellence in Teaching.

We, the class of 1996, thank you and sincerely honor you as this year's

Tokai Exchange Program

The Tokai foreign exchange program started in
1990. Kaneyuici Matsuo was the first Japanese med-
ical student to come to Bowman Gray as a partici-
pant in this program. Tokai University is a private
school in Japan and the medical school is part of the
University. Japanese students spend six months at
Bowman Gray while Bowman Gray students spend
two to four months at Tokai. Since the program
started, Bowman Gray has had thirteen exchange
students from Japan. Anyone interested in partici-
pating in this program may speak with Dean Adams
in the Office of Student Affairs. A knowledge of the
Japanese language is not necessary.

In Memory of
William T. McLean, Jr., M.D.

1927-1995
Professor of Pediatric Neurology

Bowman Gray School of Medicine as an institution and as a community lost an alumnus, a
colleague and a friend with the passing of Dr. William T. McLean, Jr. , a pioneer in the field of
pediatric neurology. Dr. McLean is considered to be one of the founders of pediatric neurology
as a medical subspecialty.

Dr. McLean, a native of Clinton, NC, who graduated from Bowman Gray in 195 1 , completed
residencies in both pediatrics and neurology. Dr. McLean served as an assistant professor at the
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine before joining the faculty of Bowman Gray in
1966. He was the head of the Section on Pediatric Neurology from 1973 to 1992. He was the
director of the Neurology Residency Training Program from 1978 to 1992.

In his 29 years of Service to Bowman Gray, his contributions to the institution did not go
unnoticed. In 1973 he received the Citation for Excellence in Teaching and he was recognized as
the school's Distinguished Alumnus for the year of 1976.

Nationally, Dr. McLean was known for his instrumental role in the establishment of the Epi-
lepsy Information Service, the nation's first toll-free telephone service to inform physicians and
the public about epilesy. Additionally, Dr. McLean authored chapters in numerous texts in the
fields of pediatrics and neurology.

We are greatly saddened at the loss of such a distinguished individual whose absence will be
deeply felt.

Pastoral Care 1994-1995

Your hospital chaplains come from many faiths and respond
to persons of any, or no, faith group. They are here to help
anyone in the Medical Center with emotional concerns and
spiritual questions. They are also available to pray with pa-
tients, patients' families, and Medical Center staff; adminis-
ter sacraments; read and discuss scripture; and help patients
or patients' families get in touch with clergy of their own.
Support group leadership is another Pastoral Care ministry.

Our chaplaincy offices are in Watlington Hall, just off the
main foyer. Office hours are 8:00 am — 5:00 pm Monday
through Friday, and the telephone number if 716-4745. A
chaplain is on call 24 hours a day. The on-call chaplain can be
reached by way of the page operator, 716-4881.

Pastoral Care chaplains hold worship services in beautiful
Davis Memorial Chapel on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fri-
days from 12:45 till 1:00 pm, and on Sunday mornings from

9:30 till 10:00 am. They also maintain a prayer line on
Audix. The number is 716-6855.

Davis Chapel is in the Gray Building. Its brick exterior forms
one of the walls of the entrance court to Watlington Hall and
can be seen from the main foyer. The chapel is always open
for meditation and prayer.

Our chaplains are certified by the Association for Clinical
Pastoral Education and other national chaplaincy associa-
tions, our faculty conducts several programs of Clinical Pas-
toral Education each year. CPE, as it is usually known, was
the ground-breaking concept that Dr. Richard Young
brought to Baptist Hospital almost fifty years ago. It is a care-
fully supervised program of intensive training in counseling
and other therapeutic skills for ministers and others who help
persons with their emotional and spiritual growth.

MEDICAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

The Medical Alumni Association provides many
services to the students at Bowman Gray. The Student
Recruitment Committee sponsored by the MAA calls
students accepted at Bowman Gray and answers
questions regarding medical school, financial aid, and
life in Winston-Salem. The MAA also provides
tickets to local cultural events. In addition, the MAA
provides refreshments for students taking Board
exams and they provide a wonderful dinner following
Boards Part I and II. For the weary third year
students, the MAA provides patient lab cards and
telephone cards. Parents Weekend is also sponsored
by the MAA every other year. The Alumni OfBce, led
by Diane Garrett until her tragic death on February 6,
1996, consists of Tracy Simpson, Donna Sizemore
and Terri Welfare. The 1996 Gray Matter staff would
like to express our sincere appreciation for the MAA
for all of their services for the students at Bowman
Gray.

DIANE H. GARRETT
1952-1996

As director of alumni affairs at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine,
Diane Ganett touched many lives. Students knew her as an unfailing ally.
Alumni knew her as a talented professional dedicated to keeping alive a
vibrant link to their alma mater. Coworkers knew her as a diligent,
typically smiling, energetic colleague.

Diane Oarrett died February 6, 19% in a weather-related automobile
accident in southeast Winston-Salem. Family and friends have established
a scholarship fund to honor her memory and aid her daughter Stacy's
access to higher education. Contributions should be directed to the Stacy
Diane Garrett Scholarship Fund, PO Box 5600, Winston-Salem, NO
27113-5600.

"Diane was a tremendous individual in every respect and gave more than
100 percent to everything," said Michael J. Poston, vice president and
associate dean for development and alumni affairs at the Bowman
Gray/Baptist Hospital Medical Center. "She was a consununate
professional, loving wife and devoted mother. We have lost more than a
colleague. We have lost a friend."

Diane was instrumental in the effort to generate funds to support
scholarships for Bowman Gray students. Named director of alumni affairs
in late 1994, Diane joined the Office of Development and Alimini Affairs
in 1991, working first as assistant and then coordinator for the Medical
Alunmi Association's Armual Fund. Prior to joining the Medical Center
staff, she worked for more than 15 years in public relations and
advertising for radio and television. A native of Pender county in eastern
North Carolina, Diane was a Phi Beta Kappa journalism graduate of the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to daughter Stacy,
who is a high school student in Winston-Salem, Diane is survived by her
husband, Ed; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Denver HoUingsworth, two sisters
and one brother.

eight
Looking real cool
Not knowing his fate
He struggled through grade

school
Through high school and col-
lege
And to our surprise
Obtained Medical Knowledge
Now he's a doctor
Some twenty years later
Without all that hair
But with arms so much greater
Stalking the ER
Looking for gore
Waiting for victims
To come through the door
He's ready and able
To cut, stitch and sew
If you're looking for help
You know just where to go
Our thanks to his teachers
They did their job great
And also to Ally
His long-loving mate
So here's to you David
You really are set
And all we have left
Is to pay off your debt.

NEILL HERRING

Dear Neill,

CONGRATULATIONS ON
BECOMING A DOCTOR.
Dad, Mom, and John send our
best wishes. You have a bright
future ahead. We have watched
you grow and mature into an
adult. You make us proud to
be our son. The love for medi-
cine and helping others shines
through in your smile and
being as a person. We chose to
be bystanders as you dealt
with the choice of which facet
of medicine you would make
your own. Your decision to
become a pediatrician makes
our hearts swell. You chose to
follow in your Father's foot-
steps whose love for children
gives his life meaning. May
success and happiness follow
you as you proceed to the next
level of doctoring. We love
you. Dad and Mom

HILARY LEATHERS

have grown spiritually as well as mentally.
May the Lord bless and guide you in the time
ahead. We love you.

Keep soaring!! Love, Mom, Dad,
Kevin, Francine, Kirby and Brant

The greatest waste of our natural re-
sources is the number of people who
never achieve their potential. Get
out of that slow lane. Shift into that
fast lane. If you think you can't you
won't. If you think you can there's a
good chance you will. Even making
the effort will make you feel like a
new person. Reputations are made
by searching for things that can't be
done and doing them. Aim low; bor-
ing. Aim high: soaring.

DAVID OHMSTEDE

Life is full of choices. You
have made choices that we are
so very proud of and fulfilled
our dreams for you. May your
future choices fulfill all of
your goals and dreams. Con-
gratulations!
With our love, Mom and Dad

SCOTT PATRICK

It's hard to find the words to express
how very proud I am of you and
what you have accomplished. I truly
believe you will make a wonderful
and understanding doctor. As you
and your sister were growing up I
tried to encourage you to try new
things and to believe you could do
anything you wanted to. Apparently
I succeeded . You owe your success
to hard work, determination, and the
sacrifices of your wonderful wife.

mine. I'm proud of you and love you.

PRISCILLA TAYLOR

Hi Priscilla,

Congratulations on your achieve-
ment. Remember when you were in
Grade School we were watching a
Television Documentary on Feed
the Children in Africa and you said
then that you were going to be a
Doctor to help needy children. That
day was the beginning of your dream
and today is a reality due to your per-
sistence and determination. Re-
member success is getting what you
want, happiness is liking what you
get.

your goal. It has been a hard
four years and we are very
proud of you and your accom-

piness and success in your
chosen profession.
