INTRODUCTION
The Williamson Road Builders cut a road through the wilder-
ness of northern Pennsylvania two hundred and two years ago,
1792-1797. They opened the land from Lycoming Creek near
Williamsport to Painted Post, N. Y. The movement over that road,
today's US 15, opened Tioga County to development. On March
26, 1994 Tioga County celebrated its one hundred and ninetieth
anniversary.
The Pennsylvania Historical Commission, which has the re-
sponsibility of marking historical places within the Common-
wealth has placed markers in Tioga County. Noting its coal
discovery, railroads, Williamson Road, electrification, and other
historicad facts. The Wellsboro Chapter of the National Society of
Daughters of the American Revolution in keeping with its mis-
sion to mark historical spots, buildings, trails, etc., has also placed
a number of markers throughout the County. Historical markers
are also placed by municipalities, veterans and citizen groups.
During the Bicentennial of the United States, 1976, all munici-
palities were encouraged to mark the event with markers. This
was done in several of the towns.
It is hoped that this Guide to Historical Markers of Tioga
County will make you aware of the heritage of Tioga County and
help you locate the markers. You can help preserve the markers
by reporting any damage or removal of them to local officials.
There are several missing. The DAR marker at Tioga near the site
of the Old Tavern which marked the place where Tioga County
was born and one placed in Lawrenceville marked the site of the
first settler were not found. There may be others on private land
or hidden from view. We hope that you let someone know if these
are found.
