R^emembering the Past,
Seeing the Future,
Living the Present
Don't Quit
"When things go wrong as they sometimes will
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill.
When funds are low and the debts are high.
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh.
When care is pressing you down a bit.
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns.
As everyone of us sometimes learns.
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out:
Don't give up though the pace seems slow -
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is failure turned inside out -
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt.
And you never can tell how close you are.
It may be near when it seems so far:
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit
It's when things seem worst that you must not QUIT.
The Challenge
Let others lead small lives,
but not you.
Let others argue over small things
but not you.
Let others cry over small hurts,
but not you.
Let others leave their future
in someone else's hands,
but not you.
Carry On
It's easy to fight when everything's right.
And you're mad with the thrill and the glory;
It's easy to cheer when victory's near.
And wallow in fields that are gory.
It's a different song when everything's wrong.
When you're feeling infernally mortal;
When it's ten against one, and hope there is none,
Buck up, litde soldier, and chortle:
Carry on! Carry on!
There isn't much punch in your blow.
You're glaring and staring and hitting out blind;
You're muddy and bloody, but never mind.
Carry on! Carry on!
You haven't the ghost of a show.
It's looking like death, but while you've a breath.
Carry on, my son! Carry on!
And so in the strife of the battle of life
It's easy to fight when you're winning;
It's easy to slave, and starve and be brave.
When the dawn of success is beginning.
But the man who can meet despair and defeat
With a cheer, there's a man of God's choosing;
The man who can fight to Heaven's own height
Is the man who can fight when he's losing.
Carry on! Carry on!
Things never were looming so black.
But show that you haven't a cowardly streak.
And though you're unlucky you never are weak.
Carry on! Carry on!
Brace up for another attack.
It's looking like hell, but - you never can tell;
Carry on, old man! Carry on!
There are some who drift out in the deserts of doubt.
And some who in brutishness wallow;
There are others, I know, who in piety go
Because of a Heaven to follow. ^
But to labor with zest, and to give of your best.
For the sweetness and joy of the giving;
To help folks along with a hand and a song;
Why, there's the real sunshine of living.
Carry on! Carry on!
Fight the good fight and true;
Believe in you mission, greet life with a cheer;
There's big work to do, and that's why you are here.
Carry on! Carry on!
Let the world be the better for you;
And at last when you die, let this be your cry:
Carry on, my soul! Carry on!

Graduation 2004
As we say goodbye to the Class of 2004 it is a time to reflect on all the memories we
share with those who are moving on to bigger and better things. Although we will
sorely miss our fellow classmates, they will always have their memories of Lenoir-
Rhyne to reflect back upon. While the class of 2004 eagerly awaits new opportunities
that will be offered to them, we all must remember that a new class follows, and those
who are still at L-R must help the new recruits. The 2004 key speaker was Mark
Hanson, the presiding Bishop of the ECLA. He spoke of the future and the promise
that every L-R grad has. We wish the best to the class of 2004 and remember to never
forget your roots.

Play Makers
Play Makers is the drama company on L-
R's campus. They perform two plays a year,
along with midnight theater which are all
student run. The fall play was The Big Re-
venge and the spring play was James and
the Giant Peach. Many actor and actresses
come out and make a name for themselves
on the stage. Singing, dancing, acting, and
special effects are all common occurances
during one of the plays. Lots of time prac-
ticing and learning parts is a necessity for
success. Advisor Joe Sturgeon, combines
talent and energy to create plays for every-
one to enjoy

Homecoming Parade
An annual event at Lenoir-Rhyne is Homecoming week, capped off by the
homecoming parade. There were many interesting floats this year, and all
were somehow related to a common theme. The parade was a huge success,
with many different organizations and Greeks participating. There were many
costumes and lots of fun that went into the decorating process. Hard work
and a commitment for success helped many groups make superb floats. The
overall winner for best float belonged to the HANDS group with their John
Deer made trucks.

Mauney-Schaffer
The Mauney-Schaffer Building was rededicated this fall with ma-
jor upgrades and improvements. The building was built in 1928.
For many years, students lived within the confines of the build-
ings, but recently they had deteriorated to a point that repair
was needed. The new and improved facility will be used for of-
fices by several schools and for conferences. Many alunmni gave
generously for improvements and repairs to a building that was
part of L-R years before they were.

Study Abroad
Last year many students had the unique opportunity to study abroad. Students decided
to travel to countries all over the world including Australia, China, England, Mexico,
and Italy for a semester. Those who could not study abroad for a semester traveled on a
class trip or in the summer partook in the semester at sea program. Studying abroad is a
unique and fun experience for any L-R student who participates. Adapting to a foreign
culture firsthand allows students to develop an entirely new perspective about them-
selves and the world around them. Expanding horizons with a semester abroad demon-
strates a sense of adventure, curiosity and flexibility. There are scholarships and grants
available to those who cannot afford the cost. During the past semester seven students
studied abroad in places from Australia to England.

Health Fair
This year the health fair exposed students
to all kinds of healthy yet delicious
dishes. There were many low carb and low
fat foods to try. There was prizes and
give aways . You could even check you blood
pressure and body fat percentage. Students
enjoyed the creative dishes and free food
giveaways. There were many stations where
students could learn interesting facts
about different foods and then sample
them. Overall the Health Fair was a huge
success .

Jazz Ensemble Choir and
Visiting Writers
The college's jazz program is charting an ambitious agenda. The group plans to submit
tapes to Essentially Ellington, a competition run by Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York
City. "The students are rising to the challenge," Nigrelli states. "There are many high
quality instrumental music programs in this area, and these students demonstrate this fact.'
Throughout the academic year, 16 area high school musicians meet weekly with Dr.
Christopher Nigrelli, assistant professor of music, to prepare advanced level jazz music for
performance. The group, known as the L-R Big Band, will serve as the centerpiece for the
college's new jazz program slated to begin fall of 2005. The program will help supplement
area high school music programs by providing support in the education of jazz and other
related musical forms.
Every month Lenoir-Rhyne plays host to a visiting writer. There have been some very
famous writers to lecture and sign books at L-R.From Kathy Riechs and Shamus
Heaney to Alice Walker and Anne Fadiman all have been part of the L-R experience.
The Lenoir-Rhyne A Cappella Choir, Western Piedmont Symphony and Fletcher Opera
Institute soloists performed Handel's "Messiah, a Sacred Oratorio in Three Parts. The A
Cappella Choir is under the direction of Dr. Paul D. Weber, associate professor of music.
Every voice range can be heard. A tryout is required to see if you have the proper range to be
in choir.

Football
This year's football team played a very disciplined
game of football. Through the first seven weeks of
the season Coach Hicks kept his team in every
game. Their victories this year included wins over
conference opponents Newberry and Wingate.
There were many heartbreaking losses including an
overtime loss to Kentucky State in front of the home
crowd. The Bears look forward to a strong produc-
tive season next year in hopes of improving on the
accomplishments of this year.

included their first ever conference championship
with a 12-2 conference record and a 27-8 overall

team was small, their desire was huge and they
played superbly. With timley spikes, sets, and serves,
the Bears destroyed opponents while having a fun
time in the process. Congrats to the new conference

worked hard all season to put forth great effort where

the team has no seniors and is looking fonward to a

Women's Soccer
The women's soccer team had a roller coaster season
with many highs and lows. Their overall record does
not tell the story of how many close, hard fought con-
tests they lost. The loss of Julie Crosby forced the
Lady Bears to make good use of their freshmen goalie
class. Senior Captain Julie Dodds provided leadership
and strength to a young team that showed great prom-
ise all year. With a conference win against Mars Hill
and a tie against Catawba, along with four one goal
losses, the Bears proved they can play with anyone in
the conference. When the season begins next year,
the women's soccer team will be ready and up to the
challenge of becoming conference champs.

Women's Golf
The women's golf team has won the past two SAC confer-
ence championships and look to three peat this year. Fall
season results show that the women appear to be in good
shape to do just that. With a growing team and senior
leadership from Emily Allen and Carlie Gordon, the
women look poised for another great year. A large fresh-
man class has contributed nicely to the seasoned veter-
ans. If the Lady Bears continue to perform at their highest
level, they should be number one once again in the SAC.

year led by 1,000 point scorer Crystal Clary. The Lady
Bears ended the regular season in third place in the
confernce and faced Mars Hill in the first round of the
Conference playoffs. They have experienced many
exciting games including heartbreaking overtime loses to
conference foes Mars Hill and Wingate. They have also
tasted hard fought victory with two wins over Catawba,

players alike. Lenoir-Rhyne cheerleaders are no different
as they work day in and out to come up with the best
cheers that will involve the crowd to increase the energy
and enthusiasm for the game. With rigorous workouts and
routines these men and women put forth great effort to
ensure that the fans enjoy the game. Thank you cheer-

Women's Tennis
This year Lenoir-Rhyne welcomed back women's tennis
at tine collegiate level. Since the addition on the
McCrorie Center there have been no tennis courts at L-
R. Now a plan has been set in action for new courts
and new teams. Men' tennis is scheduled to come back
to L-R next year. The women have played in three
tournaments so far and have unfortunately been shut
out. With continued strong play and hard work these
ladies will soon be a force to be reckoned with.
This Bear concentrates on hitting a

Athletic Training
The athletic trainers work diligently to help make sure athletes from all different sports are in
the best shape they can be going into a game. They help to stretch them and give them water
when needed. They stand by in case of an accident and are trained to take care of almost
anything. Without their help athletes would suffer through many more aches and pains.
Although they may be under appreciated their work to ensure the well being of others de-

The 2004 election was a tight race that was not decided until after the election
was over. George W. Bush, was reelected as President of the United States
defeating John Kerry. Debate from both the Republicans and Democrats
occured at Lenoir-Rhyne long into the night with handouts to calculate state
support and electorial voting. Guest speakers gave their input and those work-

Homecoming weekend features an event that is unpublicized but mucin anticipated. The
annual toilet papering of the college is an event that many students participate in.
Unfotunately clean up costs can be expansive. Students grab toilet paper, paper towels,
and any other product to roll the campus in. Often friends cars fall victim to the crime.
This event brings unity to the college in more ways then one. First students enjoy rolling
the school together tthen they enjoy the long hours of cleaning it up the next day

President's Page
This year can be remembered for many big moments, and you will see
them captured on the pages of the HACAWA. Each of us has our favorite
times and events that distinguish our recollections of 2004-05. To me the
greatness of Lenoir-Rhyne was captured when April Huffman finished 10th
in the national Phi Beta Lambda competiton, and Crystal Clary was named
the first team All- American center in basketball. Some will recall how Lenoir-
Rhyne established itself as a national leader in technology when the wireless
computer network was initated. We were all inspired by the many distin-
guished individuals who visited our campus and interacted with faculty and
students. Those include William Seidman, former chair of the FDIC and
Chief of Staff for Gerald Ford, as well as internationally known author Alice
Walker.
We rededicated the Mauney-Schaeffer Conference Hall this year after con-
verting the old residence halls into state-of-the-art academic facilities. This is
also the year we established the Thomas W. Reese Institute for the Conser-
vation of Natural Resources through a very generous donation of $3,000,000
from Thomas Reese. In addition, Lenoir-Rhyne was the beneficiary of a
$1,000,000 gift from the Glen and Adie Ketner family to create the first en-
dowed profforship in nursing. These important commitments will benefit
generations of students.
With all of the special public events that occured this academic year, the
most memorable moments are the personal ones. Each student, each faculty
member, and each staff member will cherish some very personal times when
they Interacted with others on campus. It is our hope that this addition of the
HACAWA will help to capture those special times as we finish the year as
well as preserve our favorite memories throughout the years to come.
Best wishes to all,
Wayne B. Powell. Ph.D.

Interdisciplinary Studies Programs
INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES PROGRAM
The Interdisciplinary Studies major is designed to allow students, in close consultation with faculty,
to design programs of study that are not offered in one of the traditional majors. A General Studies
major must differ significantly from existing programs of study and must be approved by the
College's Academic Program Committee, which is composed of faculty, students, and the Dean of
Academic Programs. Pre-approved areas of concentration for the General Studies major are listed
below. The Academic Program Committee may approve other areas of concentration if they are
submitted one year prior to the proposed graduation date. Such requests should be submitted with
faculty support to the Office of Academic Affairs. A request for a General Studies major must con-
tain a clearly articulated and cohesive program of study supported by faculty at Lenoir-Rhyne Col-
lege. In addition to all core requirements and the College's minimum of 128 hours, the program of
study must meet the following requirements:
• at least 24 hours in a chosen primary academic division;
• at least 12 hours from one program within the primary academic division;
• at least 12 hours in each of two other academic divisions;
• at least 12 hours (excluding PEL 400 and SCI 300) at the 300/400 level at Lenoir-Rhyne College.
MAJOR: Lenoir-Rhyne College offers a major in Interdisciplinary Studies. Students
may select an area of concentration that has already been developed or formulate
another concentration. An Interdisciplinary Studies major earns a B.A. degree.

COMMUNICATION
The Communication major provides students with the broad background necessary for successful entry
into the field of communication or for further work inncommunication at the graduate level. A common core
of courses gives majors an understanding of both the history of the field and the ethical responsibilities of

speaking, broadcasting, and group communications. Specialized tracks in corporate communication, elec-
tronic media, and print media can be chosen to suit the student's interests and career goals. Both intern-
ships and courses in the tracks provide practical, professional experience in these areas. The Communica-
tion major earns a B.A. degree
ENGLISH
The courses offered in the English curriculum are designed to develop students' abilities to express their
thoughts clearly, coherently, and effectively in oral and written form; to familiarize them with English, Ameri-
can, and World literature; to develop their analytical skills, critical judgment, and aesthetic appreciation of
quality literature; and to help them achieve deeper personal insight and self-awareness. The English major

2005 HACAWA
The 2005 HACAWA was published by Jostens publishing company. The student portraits
were taken by Carolina Photography and the sports photos for Lenoir-Rl^yne collegiate
sports were taken by Phil Robinson of SportsFotos, Inc. Some photos used were taken by the
PR department at Lenoir-Rhyne and the rest were taken by Shane Budd, this year's editor,
the cover is four process color embossed with matte black background, trim size of 9x12
encompassing ten sigs. The pages were created on a Dell OptiPlex GX 110 using PageMaker
6.5. The primary font used was Palintino with Times New Roman, and Bookend New as
secondary fonts. Bill Hall was the representative of Jostens who assisted in the production of
the book and Colleen Bump was the harrassing advisor. I would like to thank Dr. Russell
Benton, and Jen, and James Marquardt-Leach for helping to proof the pages. This amiual
publication is sole property of Lenoir-Rhyne College and may not be copied in any way
without the consent of the college.
