Class of 2009,

Swarthmore is a place not unfamiliar with transition. Its student body, like every learning
institution, is in constant flux. With each passing year, Swarthmore both welcomes a class of
eager and frightened young adults into its warm community and sends off a class of both
well-worked and well-prepared graduates into the larger world. The same goes for
Swarthmore's fine faculty and staff; professors leave for and come back from their beloved
Sabbaticals; new faculty and staff are hired; some retire or move on to newer ventures. Of
course, the 08-09 academic year was no exception. I Ivl

With this book, the editorial board of the Halcyon wishes to present to you a visual
representation of Swarthmore's own specific method of progress. While the concept of
change usually implies passivity, it is exactly in that way that i believe Swarthmore diverges
from the norm. As you turn these pages and thus through various chapters of this past
academic year, I hope that you can see how Swarthmore refuses to be a mere backseat
driver to fate. While since August we have seen some massive changes in the world around
us— be It the troubled world economy, the election of our first African-American President,
or simply the search for someone to fill the soon-to-be empty seat of our beloved President
Al Bloom-the Swarthmore community has consistently placed itself directly into the
frontlines, refusing to be simply affected, resolving only to effect.

I cannot even imagine what good you will do for the world now that you have completed
your time here at Swarthmore, class of 2009. However, i can say that i do feel like the world
is safe in your hands, as it will be with the next class, and the next. As long as Swarthmore
holds dear its devotion to finding the light within all, while also demanding a brand of
academic excellence that deeply engrains an understanding of the virtues of hard work
into the hearts of every one of its students, I feel that the world can a||^ will only change for
the better.

Thus, I ask you to please enjoy this book you have in your hands. Years from now I hope
that it will be one of the materials you have left from Swarthmore and that as you revisit old
memories, it will help reinvigorate the Swarthmore spirit that will surely always be within
you. Congratulations, Class of 09!

Best,

James Preimesberger '1 1
Executive Editor
Halcyon 2009

Since arriving at Swarthmore in the late summer of 2005, you tiave experienced significant
ctianges in your personal and intellectual growth, even profound transformations in how you
view yourself and the world. In the process you were challenged in myriad ways by peers,
administrators, faculty and staff - that, while not always fun or comfortable, have allowed you
to see clearer, think more critically and effect change positively.

Your contributions to the college and the broader community as Resident Assistants, Writing
Associates, athletes, debaters. Student Academic Mentors, Lang Scholars, Orientation
Leaders, college committee members, leaders of student organizations, tutors and mentors for
children in Chester, Chinatown and Kennett Square, and many more - are immeasurable. On
behalf of Swarthmore College, I thank you. Given these trying yet exciting times, your
leadership is needed more than ever.

It has been an honor and privilege to serve as the Dean for the Class of 2009. Completing the
degree requirements and walking across the stage of the glorious Scott Amphitheater, you
now join the previous 136 Swarthmore graduating classes whose members have gone on--
and continue— to change the world for the better. You have much to build on. It is now your
turn.

All the Best,

We're Swatties. We flourish in an

unforgiving climate. It's not

exactly our style to back away

from a difficult challenge. If it was

our style, we wouldn't be at this

school and we certainly wouldn't

be here today, dressed like this,

getting ready to do what we're

getting ready to do...

The fact that some of us are trading

the demands of academic

assignments for the demands of

money shoudn't mal<e much of a

difference, because the answer to

both is always the same; hard work.

Faith Pampel,

Your Swarthmore education is an immensely sea-
worttiy vessel. Sliove off and sail, remembering this:

"If there is no wind - row"!

Love from you very proud family

We are incredibly proud of
who you've become ... and

"I still find each day too
short for all the thoughts
I want to think, all the walks
I want to take, all the books
I want to read and all the
friends I want to see. "

Love, Mom and Dad

We send
you here two big hugs and all our love. For edways
and for ever, como decia el cuento. Tu sonrisa
ironica y parlanchina ha sido nuestra gran alegria
y felicidad, y te deseamos muchas cosas buenas
para el dia de tu graduacion, y todas las cosas
buenas que te mereces para despues. Papi y Mami.
