THE HALE FAMILY OF CONNECTICUT. 



1. Samuel^ Haill, or Hale, was born in 1610. He was in "Wethers- 
field, Conn., in IT),')?. He served in the Pequot war, and received a grant 
of sixty acres of land from the General Court for his services in that war. 
In 1G39 he was in Hartford, Conn., where he owned a lot on the east side 
of the river; and in 1642 he settled in AV^ethersfield, Conn., where he was 
a selectman in 1647. He was one of tlie first proprietors of Norwalk, in 
1654, and served as a deputy from that town to the General Court, from 
1656 to 1659. In 1660 he returned to Wethersfield, Conn., where he leased 
the estate of Governor ^Yelles, on the east side of the Connecticut River. 
At a town meeting held Feb. 23, 1670, he was chosen as one of a commit- 
tee of three " to repair the whole meeting house." 

In 1640 he bought a house, barn and three acres of land. In 1654 he 
sold the same. 

The town gave him four acres of swamp land in 1653. In 1661 he 
bought 240 acres on the east side of the river, from Samuel Smith. In 
1665 he bought land of Gregory Wilterton. In 1670 he drew land in the 
allotment. 

In March, 1680, he made an afllidavit in wliich he stated that he was 65 
years of age. 

In Feb., 1691, he signed the covenant for a new church at Naubuc. 

" This Assembly doth appoint and em])ower the Surveyor of the Countie 
of Hartford, with the assistance of the Surveyor of one of the towns in 
said Countie, to lay out to the heirs of Samuel Hale, sixtii' acres of land, 
and also fiftie acres to the heirs of Thomas Hale, according to the tenor 
of their grants, not infringing upon any former grant, the said land being 
granted to the parties above named for their services in the Pequod 
Warre." 

He died at Glastonbury, Nov. 9, 1693; and his widow. Marv, died Jan. 
19, 1711-12. 

His will is dated Doc. 26, 1692, and proved Dec. 6, 1693. Tiie inven- 
tory of his estate was taken Nov. 13, 1693, showing £100 of personalty.

LiKDT. Samuel^ Hale (Samuel}) was born Feb. 12, 1644-5, in 
Wethersfield, Conn. He married first. June 20, 1670, Ruth, daugh- 
ter of Thomas Edwards, who died Dec. 26, 1682, ageil 30; and 
married second, in 1695, Mary, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth 
(JFIollister) Welles, who was born Nov. 23, 1666, and died Feb. 18, 
1714—5, aged 48. He resided in Glastonbury, Conn., and was a 
Justice of the Peace. He died Nov. 18, 1711, aged 67. 



" He represented the town of Glastonbury, Conn., in the General 
Court, May session, 1695; October session, 1696; October session 
1697; January session 1697; October session 1701; May session 
1702; October session 1702; May session 1704; October session 
1704; May session 1705; October session 1705, and May session 
1700." 

His will was dated Feb. 23, 1708/9. His estate inventoried £1406, 
5, 5. Inventory was taken May 30, 1712. 

Her will is dated March 4, 1714, and proved March 26, 1715.

John'' Hale {Samue?) was born ¥eh. 21, 1646-7, in Wethersfield. 
He married, May 8, 1668, Hannah, daughter of John and Ann Nott, 
born June 10, 1649, in Wethersfield. He died July 19, 1709. 

He drew a lot in 1673. 

In 1675 he bought 15 acres of Samuel Smith in the West Fields. 

In Feb., 1691, he signed an agreement for a new church on the 
east side of the Connecticut River at Glastonbury. He assisted 
in repairing the meeting house in Glastonbury.

Thomas^ Hale {Samuel^) was born in 1653. He married, Oct. 30, 
1079, Naomi, daughter of John and Naomi Kilbourn, who was 
born in 1656, and died May 17, 1735, aged 79. He lived in Glas- 
tonbury, Conn., where he died Dec. 23, 1723, aged 70. 

His will is dated June 3, 1723, and proved March 3, 1723/4.

, who died May 20, 1740, aged 54; and married third, Mrs. 

Mary Ilollister (widow of Josiah Ilollister, dr.), who died J.in. is, 
1786, aged 82. Capt. Hale died duly 2, 1772, aged 7t;. 

His will was dated Nov. 30, 1771, and proved duly 20, 1772.

Oct. IG, 170G, and died Feb. G, 179G, in her 90th ygar'. He died 
July 22, 1784, in his 77th year.

9. Ebenezer^ Hale {John^^ Samuel^) was born Dec. 24, 1682, in 
Wethersfield, Comi., and removed to Middletown, Conn. He mar- 
ried fij'st, Ruth, daughter of Samuel and Sarah Curtis, who was 
born May 17, 1687, in Wethersfield, and died Dec, 1724, at Mid- 
dletown, Conn. ; and mai'ried second, Apr. 4, 1725, Abigail, daugh- 
ter of Thomas Miller of Middletown, Conn. 

On March 28, 1732, Ebenezer Hale and Abigail Hale, his wife, 
of Middletown, quitclaimed " Unto our brothers, Stephen Miller 
and James Miller, both of Middletown, interest in the estate of their 
honoured father, Thomas Miller, late of Middletown, deceased."

studied medicine and surgery, settling at Glastonbury. lie married. 
Mar. 23, 1749, Abigail, daughter of Joseph and Mary (White) Hol- 
lister, who was born Apr. 18, 1728, and died Oct. 9, 1807, aged 79. 
He died at Glastonbury, May 27, 1790, aged 66.

Sarah Watts, who died Dec. 25, 1763 ; and married second, Apr. 30 
1764, Sarah Wood.

1721, at Middletown, Conn. He married, Mar. 9, 1748-9, at Mid- 
dletown, Mary Turner. He died May 26, 1760.

22. Elisha^ Hale [Ebenezer,^ John,- Samuel}) was born Aug. 23, 1724, 

in Middletown, Conn. He married Sibyl , who owned the 

covenant, July 14, 1751, in Rev. Nathaniel Chauncy's Church at 
Durham. He was a member of Lieut. Abijah Hall's company, in 
Col. John Chester's regiment, on the alarm for the relief of Fort 
William Henry, in Aug., 1757, and served sixteen days. He lived in 
that part of Farmington now Bristol, and died about 1770. Jan. 9, 
1771, administration on his estate was granted to his widow, Sibyl, 
she being appointed guardian of Elisha, Eunice, Phebe and Free- 
love. It is presumed that the widow, Sibyl, married second, as his 
second wife, Eliakim AVelton of AVolcott, Conn. 

On Apr. 13, 17G1, Jonathan Norton, of Farmington, sold to 
Elisha Hale, of Farmington, three pieces of land. 

In Jan., 1760, Ilezekiah Rew and wife, of Farmington, for £9. 
sold to Elisha Hail, of Farmington, 20 acres of land in Farmington. 

On Dec. 1, 1766, Josiah Lewis and Thomas Hart, of Farmington, 
sold to PLlisha Hail, of Farmington, land to be part of a highway. 

On Nov. 21, 1766. Eilward Gaylord, of Farmington, for £4, sold 
to Elisha H5il, of Farmington, "all my right of land in Tin- 
mouth, Province of New York."

is not known.

31. Eunice® Hale {Elisha,'^ Ehenezer,^ John,- SamueP) [a daughter of 

Elisha and Sibyl Hale] was born about 1756/7 at Durham, Conn., 
or Farmingtou, Conn. 

On Aug. 15, 1776, she was married at Harwinton, Conn., to 
Benjamin® Graves ( Cornelius * Joseph,^ Benjamin,'- John^) [a son of 
Cornelius'' and Hannah (Brooks) Graves], who was born March 12, 
1754, and baptized Aj)ril 29, 1754. 

Benjamin® Graves, of Northbury parish, served in the "Water- 
bury, Conn., militia during the Revolution. 

About 1797 ho removed to Paris, Oneida County (then Herki- 
mer County), New York. 

On Feb. 13, 1797, St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church was 
organized at Paris Hill, N. Y., and at said meeting Benjamin 
Graves was chosen vestryman, serving nine years, until 18U6. He 
afterwards served one year as junior warden. 

Eunice Hale, wife of Benjamin Graves, died at Paris, N. Y., 
June 6, 1814. He died at Perryville, Madison Countv. New York, 
Nov. 29, 1836.

en's Episcopal burial ground, at burial ground, at Paris Hill, is

Wethersfield, Sept. 27, 1745. He married Sarah , and re- 
moved to Winchester, Conn., where he lived on the south-west shore 
of Long Lake, west of the mouth of Taylor's Brook, up to 1784.
