HAMLIN.

The Hamlin's are of French origin; they came to Eng-
land about 1 080. Tradition says says that two brothers
came to New England and settled at Barnstable, Mass.
James, probably the eldest, brought his wife and at least
one child with him, and remained permanently at Barn-
stable. Giles, a sea captain, soon went to Middletown,
Conn., and made that place his home. James, with his
family, came to America in 1 640. Giles, his brother, a
single man, probably came later, though this is not
known. To the Barnstable family is traced the lineage
of Vice-President Hannibal Hamlin.

The name of Hamlin has been variously written, often
Hamblen, and as often Hamlin and Hamlen.

John Hamlin, in the year 1 776, at the age of thirteen,

removed with his parents to Cummington three years be-
fore it took the municipal rank of a town. It was among
the most distinct of his recollections that while at North-
ampton, on his way to Cummington, the news of our
country's Declaration of Independence reached that
town, surprising yet rejoicing the inhabitants. At the
age of sixteen he entered the service of his country for
the maintenance of this declaration, in which service he
continued about six months. For this he was subse-
quently moderately pensioned by the government, and
was, at the time of his death, the last of the Revolution-
ary pensioners in Plainfield. At the age of twenty-eight
he married and removed to Plainfield, then a district be-
longing to Cummington, thus becoming one of its earliest
inhabitants, though it was not incorporated as a town till
about seventeen years later. As a citizen Mr. Hamlin
was respected and honored, having received many of-
fices of trust by the suffrages of his fellow citizens. For
nineteen years he was one of the Selectmen of the town,
and was five years, including ten sessions, a member of
