tlie Quakers. He was, for the most part, a silent tliinkcr.
yet able if occasion required, to supi)ort his opinions with
strong argument. Like many others of his generation, he
was strongly opposed to fictitious literature. The Bible was
the Book he read, and his copy of its concordance v.-as well
thumb-marked. Me was neither a borrower nor a lender to
any great extent. What surplus money he acquired- v.-as

Mr. Hinshaw, his brother. Jacob, Steplicn Webb. Sr.. an-.i
William McCord started for Illinois. The men rode horse-
back and brought their families and personal effects in cov-
ered wagons drawn by c">xen. There were no raiiroa-ls in
those days. They had a very pleasant journey, however,
until they reached the Ohio River, then ihcir troubles began.
The spring rains set in and the streams v.-ere S0'?n over-
flowing. These they crossed on rafts, terrporari'y cr^v.-
structed. It was necessary for them to unload and reload
their goods at every such crossing. They n^adc their Iiorsc<
and oxen swim the streams with the wagons.

They had to stop awhile in Iivliana on account of bad
roads and high rivers. They crnssed the Sa^gan^•>n at
Xewcom's ford, near L'rl)ana, on a raft and were dolaved
there one week.

of McLean County), they had great difficulty in crossing
the stream at that place, and so camped there a while. Then
a great wind storm came u[) and nearly blew then: away,
teams, wagons and all. When tliey fmally arrived in wiiat
is now McLean County, Illinois, July 31. 1S27, the country
was so wet that it was impossible to go much farther.
Moreover, some trouble had just occurred between the
wiiites at Galena^ 111., and the \\'innebago Indians, and the
settlers feared an Indian war in the nortli part of this state.
For these reasons the party decided tiot to go on to the Kan-
kakee. Mr. Ilinshaw then lx.nigh.t a "claim" of twenty acres
of timber land witli a one-room log cabin upon it. This tract
is situated in the S. W. ;4 of Sec. 17, T. 23 X.. R. 2 K. 3rd
P. M. and forms the north end of the farm now owned by
Mr. Williain Anthony. For this claim, Mr. Ilinshaw gave
a wagon and a yoke of oxen, worth altogether about fifty
dollars. The same land is now worth upwards of two hun-
dred and fifty dollars per acre at a conservp.tivc valuation.

Mr. Hinshaw occupied tlie log cabin on his "claim" for a
few years until he could build a larger and better house,
when he rented the cabin to James T. Miller (maternal
grandfather of the editor of this volume), who came out
with his family from \'irginia in th.e year l.'^3■i. and who
occupied it in turn about one year until h.e purchased a farm
and built a house of his own. This cab^n stood near t'te
Springfield road, a few rods south of the present site of the
Ilinshaw sch.ool house.

It was during this special session that the great ''InterTial

cnt's family to McLean County, Illinois, in the sprinc^ of the
year 1827. He went to school during the famous "winter
of the deep snow" (1S30-'31), and spent his Saturday? in
liusking and shelling corn by hand^ and pounding it into
meal with a wooden mortar and pestle.

Mr. Hinshaw did his share of hunting wild animals, es-
pecially wolves, which were a common pest.

lie had one trying experience when he was going to mill
with an ox teain and was overtaken by a prairie fire. lie
tried to drive h.is oxen through it, l>ut tliey refused to face
the flames and turned and ran away in si^ite of a", his elTorts.
At last he saw a place where a part of the fire iiad gone
faster than the rest, leaving a gap in his road. He suc-
ceeded in guiding liis oxen into this gap. and finally got
safely through.

The year 1844 was a very wet season. During that year.
Mr. Hinshaw drove a herrl of cattle from his farm to Mil-
waukee, Wis. He swam creeks and rivers of all kinds and
sizes. He was delayed at tiie Kankakee fifteen days. He
frequently drove his cattle into the river, but v/'p.cn th.cy
reached the swift current, they turned back to th.e sh.ore
from which they had started.

I'inally one very tall ox touched the bottom of the stream,
went across, and tlie rest followed. Mr. Hinshav.- lived
nearly all his life upon his farm in Section 8. Dloonnngton.
Township. McLean County, Illinois.

He married Polly M. Tolivcr, daughter of James and.

Dec. 21. 1828. Ten children were bc>rn oi this marriage, of
