THKCRONK FAMILY FROM JOHN CRONK iMJRN FN ITs'j.

No. 1. First Generation Q^^m^ f John Cron(\

John Crone was born 4« 1789 at York, Pa., then
known as Little York. He died near -Lucas, Ohio, in
1871. He was a son of Jacob Crone, injljitljlji Ihwn
JAOALi^H^^rTme who was a soldier in the Revolution.
A Jacob Crone lived in York County in 1782 and
was then a bachelor. He was i^m^^Mpr the son of
John Crone of Windsor Township. Jolni Crone (1)
married Elizabeth Pence who was born at York in
1794 and died near Lucas ALarch 26, 1870. The mar-
riage probably took place in 1812.

Children: Jacob (2): John (3); Elizabeth (4): Joseph
(')): George (O); Emily (7): Catherine (8).

John and Elizabeth Pence Crone lived at York,

then at Baltimore, then Hagerstown and later Gre-

encastle and Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. John Crone

. was a blacksmith and probably went from place to place

^ to find work until he finally decided to remove to Ohio.

; His son, John Crone, who was born at or near Cham-

"^ bersburg often spoke of Little York. Evidently the

family returned to York for some time before going

V to Ohio. The distance from York through the towns

^- mentioned and back to York is only about two hundred

miles. The date of coming to Ohio is not known but

it could hardly have been earlier than l^-oO. John

.\ Crone lived on a farm near Lucas, Ohio. He had a

N^ blacksmith shop on this farm. He was a fifer in the

, war of 1812 and saw service near Baltimore in 1814.

No. 2. Second Generation (1) Jacob Crone.

Jacob Crone was born at York, Pa., in 1813, and
died at Tipton, Missouri, in 1882. He married Mariah
Chew who was born at Lucas July 31, 1817. and died
at Tipton in April. 1892.

Children: Rosina (9); John R. (10): William C.
(11): Dora (14); Elizabeth (12): Lydia (13).

THK WEAVER FAMILY

The first known ancestor of the Weaver family
is Samuel Weaver who lived at Harrisonburg, Virgi-
nia. Probable date of birth about 1740. The family
came to Virginia from Pennsylvania just before the
Revolution when many German families went into the
Shenandoah Valley. The name was originally Weber,
many of that name having come to this country. Sa-
muel Weaver married Anna Heatwole whose family can
be traced back to 1600. Of the children of Samuel
Weaver four sons and one daughter went west. The
Weaver family is still prominent in Rockingham Co-
unty, Virginia, and the old Weaver homestead still
stands two and a half miles west of Harrisonburg.

TIIK FIS.SKL FAMIL^•.

Of tlic Fis.sel family little is known. Eiizaboth
l-'issol was born at York, Pa.. Marrli l'O. 17^^ and
il'u''\ May 24, ]^.")0. According to tho C'.misus of 17'.K)

iiii'_riit be thf iathcr of Elizabeth l^'issol.

There was Honry F''issol in wdi()s(^ family there
was one male o\-e!- .si.\te(Mi. that is himself, and two
females. One of the latter w,is ]>rol)al)ly his wife and
the other nd^dit have l)een Eli/.abetli.

Then, was a .lohn Fissel in whose family there
wa^ one male ove- si.xteeii, hims.df, and on(> ftnnale.
I*resumat>ly the latter wa^ the wife of John l-'issel,
otli'Mwisi. Elizabeth could iiave had no full brothers
an<l -^istei-s

39

Frodoi'iek Pisslo is rGi)ortcd alone.

AcLam Fistle is reportod. In his family tlioi-o \voi-o
one male over sixteen, himsolf, and two females, one
of whom mifjht have been Elizabeth Fissel. Tliere
were so many inaccuracies in spellinfr names at the
time that the name of the family mi<j:ht easily have
been written Fistle.

Addam Fistle is reported. In his family there
were three males over sixteen and two females. Of
the three males over sixteen one was Addam Fistle
himself. The other two could hardly have been brot-
hers of Elizabeth Fissel since the^' could hardly have
been so much older than she.

Philip Fi.stle is reported. In his family there was
one male over sixteen, himself, and two females. Of
the latter one might have been Elizabeth Fissel.

It therefore comes down to a question of John
Fissel, Adam Fistle, or Philip Fistle. As far as spel-
ling is concerned the advantage is in favor of John
Fissel but this is not a very weighty point. I am
inclined to believe that the father of Elizabeth Fissel
was Adam Fistle or Fissel since neither the name John
nor the name Philip appears in the family of Elizabeth
Fissel. The name Adam does appear in the family.
In any case it is very jjrobable that all the Fissels
and Fistles named were brothers, since they very
likely represent the second generation in this country.
The name is not a very common one. There is a
record of the arrival of only one, Johannes Fissel
who arrived on the Loyal Judith Sept. 3, 1742. In
1790 only one other Fissel is reported in Penn.sylva-
nia, Ulrich Fissle who lived in Lancaster County and
who was doubtless the Ulrich Fissel who was a priv-
ate in the Revolution. He enlisted from Lancaster
County and belonged to Nathaniel Page's Company of
Col. Mathias Slough's batallion destined for the camp
in the Jerseys, Sept. 11, 1770. A John Fissal also
enlisted from Lancaster and was a private in the
seventh batallion during 17>2-3. He is possibly the
John Fissel reported in Yorlc County in 1790.

safe to conclude that this is the He.iry Crone after-

REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIERS BY NAME OF CRONE.

There were four soldiers in the Revolution by name
of Crone. They were:

1. Henrj" Crone who w^as a private in the First
Pennsylvania Regiment, Continental Line. He is pro-
bably the Henry Crone mentioned above as living in
Berks County in 1768. Probably he is the son of
Henrich Cron who arrived in 1748.

2. Noble Crone who was a private in Captain
Joseph Howell's Company of the Second Pennsylvania,
Continental Line.

In 1700 no mention is found of LMiihp, Samui'l and
Simon Crone. Were they older sons of John Crone
who had died, leaviuLT no one to peri)etuate their
names? In that case it is reasonable to suppose tliat

born soon after his arrival.

in other parts of Pennsylvania.

In 1832 there was a David Crone in Franklin Co-

mentioned as livint; in Franklin County in 1790.

In Pittsburgh there are several Crones but none
related to the Crone family of this paper. Some are
Jews and others are recent arrivals, some from Al-

of Dover Township, York County-. The date is not
given but her father was born in 1820.

Elizabeth Spangler, an aunt of Sarah Spangler,
married Jacob Crone of Dover Township. She was
born about 1815. Their children are; George, Levi,

befoi-e 1740 and tiie task of tinding a tii-st ances^tor
in such a number is hop(*less. Thei-e is i-eason to
believe that the famili(>s that took part in the mo
vement to Virginia arrived a number of years before
the immiijrants recorded in the lists referred to above.
As a matter of fact there were a number of Webers
recorded who must have arrived much earlier. The
list given here is taken from Rupp's Thirty Thousand
Immitrrants and is not at all complete.

Jacob, Heinrich and Johannes Weber settled in
Lancaster County in 1719. As early as 1733 a colony
of Pennsylvania- Germans had come from Lancastei-
County to Shenandoah Valley. They settled at Elk-
ton less than twenty miles from Harrisonburg where
the Weavers are found. In 1780 the Weavers, the fa
mily of the writer, were amonoj the largest landowners
of Rockinghatn County. They must have arrived a
number of j^ears before. The Pennsylvania-Germans
as a rule paid cash for their lands and it may be
presumed that the Weavers were fairly well-to-do be-
fore they left Pennsylvania

Jacob Weaver owned 110 acres of land in Phila-
delpiiia County before 1734. In 17t)9 he is reported
as having 240 acres. Peter Weber owned 150 acres.

Christian Weber was naturalized in Philadelphia
County in 1734-5. He was probably a recent arrival.

It was a rather general custom to name the el-
dest son from his paternal grandfather. For example
the eldest son of John Weaver was Samuel Weaver,
named from Samuel Weaver (1), the eldest son of
William Weaver was named John, etc. Since Samu-
els and Johns appear in other branches of the family
