Subject: The Illinois Teacher, Volume: 17 (1871)
This volume contains at least two reports shortly after the 'Great Chicago Fire'. Letters dated, Oct 16 and Oct 18, 1871 were published in the 'Illinois Teacher' magazine. The Supt. of Chicago Public Schools identifies which schools burned to ashes, which teachers are missing and more. The School Supt. from Rockford, Illinois, James Harvey Blodgett, visits the School Supt. of Chicago on Oct. 14, 1871, just 4 days after the fires were extinguished, and offers his council; which was taken. From the tone of the letters, the reader can see, the people of Chicago were traumatized to their core. These letters are an eye witness account of that unbelievable moment in time, how they dealt with the disaster.
