It's not a mystery, we grow older, get more mature and make decisions that begin to effect
more than just the course of our days. The evolution of the question is subtle, but exact. Where we
used to ask "what should I wear?" or "what should I eat today" we must now begin to ask how we
will buy the clothes and the food we need to answer those daily questions. We are slowly becom-
ing the teachers, the lawyers, the doctors, the fibers of our society. What a remarkable time upon
which to embark. What a remarkable time in which to make these decisions. We have the power
now to, not only shape our lives, but to shape the world in which we live.
As we move forward, leaving footprints on the path it is important to know that those im-
prints you left will always be there to look back upon. They will always be there to reflect upon and
to examine the turns you made in the road. This present will soon be the past~those footprints—
those engravings in the road to our final destinations. Our feet will never fit in them exactly the
same way, but they may provide the path for those that follow.
From this day forward make solid decisions, make slow decisions, make the best decisions
for your road. You have the power to change the future if you take advantage of the present.
Classmates of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, take with you the skills and knowledge
you have acquired during your time, go forward, and always step firmly along the way. Leave a
footprint— make a mark on this world.

STUOGMT ACUMNI
The STudent Alumni Relations Society (STARS) has been a registered student organization on campus since 1991.
Our mission is to enhance the students' experience and facilitate interaction with alumni while at UMass Amherst. We
achieve our purpose through organizing a variety of campus-wide events, such as a semi-formal dance, a mud volleyball
tournament and the Commencement Ball. STARS is closely affiliated with the UMass Amherst Alumni Association,
and through this relationship we are involved with many Association sponsored events such as New Students
Convocation, Homecoming, Family Day, and Commencement.
STARS members also serve as
representatives of the student
body to distinguished alumni,
thi-ough our connection with the
Alumni Association.
Continuing with the alumni
interaction goal of the group,
STARS was asked this year to
perform the role of student hosts
for Chancellor Lombard!.
Within STARS, the
Chancellor's Personal Hosts
have emerged to engage guests,
including alumni, dignitaries,
and special University friends at
the Chancellor's home for
various functions.

STARS promotes teamwork in
everything we do. Members have the
opportunity to improve their leader-
ship, communication, and
organizational skills. STARS is a
member of an international
organization, which enables STARS
members to attend district and
international conferences where we
exchange ideas and learn from other
schools on how to better serve our
student body through leadership and
teamwork.

)igma Tau Gamma is a national fraternity founded in 1920 in Central Missouri State. It started at
Amherst because Brother Chris White transferred from UMass Lowell to UMass Amherst. Realizing
in his junior year what a wonderful time he had in Lowell with it, he began to discuss it with his
friends. After recruiting other people, a group of ten
was colonized on May 4, 2002. The final seven founders
were Chris M. White, Ted Markowsky, Victor Yoon,
Chris Johnson, Marcos Parreto, Gustavo Nascinmento,
and Saulo Vionna.
Now with a group of twelve in the second semes-
ter, the fraternity has helped out at Shelter Sunday and
raised money working Patriot Games. The brothers of
Sigma Tau Gamma love to have fun, party, and play
sports, but most of all to leave with what they began
with as friends. Sigma Tau Gamma is based on friend-
ships: True friendships.

^ letter from Cbcrncellor ILotnbardi
Dear Class of 2003,
Each graduating class carries with it memories of its activities and accomplishments, its
difficulties and disappointments. The members of this class will recall the changes that
took place in their lives and the lives of their many communities during their undergradu-
ate years. These memories reflect not only the personal experiences of every student, but
the achievements that marked their exploration of life and learning throughout the years.
Every university like ours is composed of micro communities, and each student belongs
to many of these throughout their time in the university. Some form around students'
academic lives in departments, schools, and colleges; others appear through their housing
groups in residence halls. Students join clubs and sports teams, they become part of
sororities and fraternities, they engage in on and off campus organizations, they contribute
to projects and activities. Each of these micro communities represents both an opportu-
nity for social and academic growth but also a place where students change the university,
where they engage its structure to improve and update it to meet the needs of the current
generation.
This yearbook captures some of that activity; it serves to remind the members of this class
of what their college years meant to them and what their contributions mean to their
university.
We are proud of this class, its accomplishments, its impact on this institution, and its
remarkable promise. We will turn to this yearbook to
\ I i remind ourselves of its time here and as a token of this
class' permanent engagement with the University of Mas-
sachusetts Amherst.

You've come a long way, Sweetie! You were my first child, and I thank God that you turned out so
well in spite of my mistakes. I am proud of the fact that you are brilliant, poised, confident, ambitious,
and funny because these qualities will serve you well in your quest for success. But most of all, I am
proud of the fact that you possess a sincere, loving heart -- because this will serve you well in life.
I'll love you always,
