2. Hail to thee, our Alma ^Aater! 3. 'Neath thy ever verdant pine trees 4. Raise the chorus, blend the voices,
Guardian of our youth We rally to thy call,
Ever lead thy children onward Ever loyal sons and daughters-
Into light and truth; Ambassadors, we all-
Unborn youth will take our places Bound by ties of love and service
To praise thee endlessly. Friendship and loyalty,
Pembroke State, our Alma Mater, Pembroke State, our Alma Mater,
Hail to P.S.C. ! Hail to P.S.C. !
Let the echoes ring
To our loving foster parent
Loudly praises sing;
Swell the chorus 'till it reaches
On through eternity
Pembroke State, our Alma Mater,
Hail to P.S.C!

Of Dke 1962
foreword
In commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee which marks 75
years of achievement at Pembroke State College, we, the Indian-
head Staff, chose as the theme for the 1962 Indianhead, Growth
and Progress.
It is our hope that in viewing this pictorial record you
simultaneously contemplate the past as you envision the future.

Beauty reigns surpreme during half-time at the Homecoming game
As I study, fellowship, and enjoy the extracurricular activities here at Pembroke State College,
I cm deeply impressed by the surroundings — a beautiful symbol of educational progress which constitutes
the heart and pride of our fine community and surely portrays the faith of our pioneer fathers down
through our great leaders of today.
From the day in 1887 when an act was passed providing for the establishment of a normal school
in Robeson county, with faith and prayer our pioneers began work.
Many people thought the act to be a trap instead of a means of advancement; however, with
money scarce, with opposition on every hand, and with few really interested in education, a sub-
scription for five hundred dollars was raised. One ocre of land near Pates, N. C. was purchased and
on this land a two-story wood building was erected. Professor William L. Moore, a man of great faith,
not only gave the fabulous sum of two hundred dollars in cash toward the erection of this building, but
he also stopped his work in order to render his services in the interest of the school .
In answer to faith and hard work, the door to the infant Pembroke State College was opened in
the fall of 1887 with fifteen students enrolled and Professor Moore acting as principal and teacher.
In 1909 Pembroke State College rated a new home in Pembroke and in 1921, the legislature
appropriated 75,000 dollars toward the erectioa of what is now Old Main. With summer school now
available, students graduated almost every year and in turn spread the gospel of education.
Thus through faith, Pembroke State College grew and grew volumes in the library increased,
buildings were added, and the curriculum broadened under the able leadership of Hiden, Jones,
O. R. Sampson, D. F. Lowry, and Dr. R. D.- We lions — to ncme only a few, until we have reached
an important milestone in her history. Here we pause to take off our hats to one whose faith is limit-
less. He is none other than our own — Dr. Walter J. Gale, who has spent long hours and trodden
paths smooth in every direction where assistance can be secured. During his short odminstration many
changes have tcJ<en place: a new cafeteria, a new dormitory, and paved parking space. He has
also presented a long time building program and there has been a tremendous increase in the student
body.
Yes, it is with grotiti'de that we look to each of these who hod the faith and acted to provide us
with this wonderful opportunity to prepare ourselves to be, and I quote, "Fully capable and qualified
to td<e our place in society" unquote.
Many said "if can't be done" but they did It!
Even Laralne was excited when her father came to make pictures at the Miss P.S.C. Coronation.

ELMER HUNT
Pembroke Photgrapher
Thank you, Elmer, for td<ing, devel-
oping, and enlarging the majority of
our pictures. Without your cssistance
and kind co-operation, the 1962
INDIANHEAD would hove been im-
possible. Many long hours you have
devoted to us this year. We are quite
appreciative.
Thank you, Mr. George Millsaps
of Holyfield studios for your splendid
co-operation in the making of the
underclassmen pictures.
Thank you, AAr. EXike for having
contributed much of your valuable
time in the assistance of Laraine in
the student photography.
FRANCIS LAVERGNE JOHNSON
Professional Photographer
Thank you, Lovergne, for the excel-
lent service which you have rendered
in making and delivering individual
pictures and the special attention
which you gave to each one. It has
now become a tradition that we greet
you on our campus each fall. We
look forward to your coming.
