PREFACE

THESE Indices are designed to facilitate the use of the facsimiles
published by the New Palaeographical Society in the first ten years
of its existence. They cover the 250 plates issued in the years
1903-12. The arrangement of the Indices is substantially the same
as in the Indices issued by the Palaeographical Society in 1901, viz. :
I. Chronological ; II. Authors and Subjects ; III. Country of Origin ;
IV. Character of Handwriting ; V. Ornamentation ; VI. Scribes and
Artists; VII. Materials other than plain vellum ; VIII. Present
Owners ; IX. Former Owners. To these has been added a con-
cordance table for the use of subscribers who have had their plates
bound according to the scheme suggested in the * Table of Plates
(classified) '. This is also printed on a loose sheet for insertion in
the bound volumes.

Under the head of Present Owners one change has to be noted.
The Oxyrhynchus Papyrus 668 has been allotted by the Egypt
Exploration Fund to the British Museum, where it is numbered
Pap. 1532. It will be found entered under both headings. The
other corrections of any consequence which have so far been found
necessary are recorded in the corrigenda slip issued with Part X t
but two errors in the plate of monastic press-marks remain to be
corrected. In pi. 147, no. $,for Cistercians read Carmelites ; and
it has been pointed out by Dr. M. R. James that the press-mark in
the same plate, no. 4 a, is probably that of Durham, not Norwich,
Cathedral.
