To  Propose   by   Initiative    Petition: 

A  Law  Entitled:  "An  Act  to  provide  for  the  consolidation 
of  the  State  University,  now  located  at  Missoula,  the  College 
of  Agriculture  and  Mechanic  Arts,  now  located  at  Bozeman, 
and  the  School  of  Mines,  now  located  at  Butte,  together  with 
such  departments  of  the  said  institutions  as  may  be  organized 
hereafter,  under  the  name  and  style  of  the  University  of  Mon- 
tana, and  to  provide  for  the  appointment  of  a  Commission  to 
select  a  place  of  permanent  location  for  the  consolidated  institu- 
tions, and  to  permanently  locate  the  University  of  Montana  at 
either  Bozeman  or  Missoula,  as  may  be  decided  by  the  said 
Commission."

"The  manner  of  voting  on  measures  submitted  to  the  peo- 
ple shall  be:  By  marking  the  ballot  with  a  cross  in  or  on  the 
diagram  opposite  and  to  the  left  of  the  proposition  FOR  WHICH 
the  voter  desires  to  vote."

A    BILL 
To   Propose  by   Initiative   Petition : 

A  Law  Entitled :  '"An  Act  to  provide  for  the  consolidation 
of  the  State  University,  now  located  at  Missoula,  the  College 
of  Agriculture  and  Mechanic  Arts,  now  located  at  Bozeman,  and 
the  School  of  Mines,  now  located  at  Butte,  together  with  such 
departments  of  the  said  institutions  as  may  be  organized  here- 
after, under  the  name  and  style  of  the  University  of  Montana, 
and  to  provide  for  the  appointment  of  a  Commission  to  select  a 
place  of  permanent  location  for  the  consolidated  institutions,  and 
to  permanently  locate  the  University  of  Montana  at  either  Boze- 
man or  Missoula,  as  may  be  decided  by  the  said  Commission." 

BE  IT   ENACTED   BY  THE  PEOPLE    OF   MONTANA: 

Section  i.  That  the  State  University  at  Missoula,  the  Col- 
lege of .  Agriculture  and  Mechanic  Arts  at  Bozeman,  the  School 
of  Mines  at  Butte,  and  such  departments  of  said  institutions  as 
may  hereafter  be  organized,  shall  constitute  the  University  of 
Montana,  under  the  name  and  style  of  "The  University  of 
Montana." 

Section  2.  From  and  after  August  1,  1915,  said  University 
shall  be  consolidated  and  located  at  either  Missoula  or  Bozeman, 
Montana,  or  within  five  miles  of  either  of  said  places.  Said 
location  shall  be  determined  in  the  manner  hereinafter  provided. 

Section  3.  On  or  before  March  1,  1915,  there  may  be  filed 
with  the  Secretary  of  State  on  behalf  of  Bozeman  and  Missoula, 
or  either  of  them,  properly  executed  documents  specifying  a  tract 
or  tracts  of  land  available  for  the  site  of  said  University  within 
five  miles  of  such  city,  and  the  terms  on  which  the  State  Board 
of  Education  may  obtain  the  same  for  the  site  of  said  University 
in  case  it  is  located  in  or  near  said  city. 

Section  4.  That  on  or  before  March  1,  191 5,  a  committee 
composed  of  the  Governor,  the  Chief  Justice  of  the  Supreme 
Court,  and  the  Superintendent  of  Public  Instruction,  or  a  ma- 
jority of  them,  shall  appoint  a  commission  of  five  members  to  be 
chosen  from  the  Presidents  of  the  State  Universities  which  are 
consolidated  and  include  within  their  consolidation  an  Agricultural 
College  endowed  by  the  Federal  Government;  which  commission 
shall    by    a    majority   of   all    of    its    members    select    a    permanent

location   of  said   University  of   Montana  in   accordance   with   the 
provisions  of  this  act. 

Section  5.  That  said  comimission  shall  meet  and  organize 
at  the  State  Capitol,  at  Helena,  Montana,  and  determine  the 
location  of  said  University,  and  shall  on  or  before  August  1, 
191 5,  file  with  the  Secretary  of  State  its  report  in  writing,  desig- 
nating the  place  of  said  location.  Upon  the  filing  of  said  report 
the  place  therein  designated  shall  be  the  seat  of  said  University. 

Section  6.  Immediately  upon  the  location  of  the  said  Uni- 
versity being  so  determined,  it  shall  be  the  duty  of  the  State 
Board  of  Education  to  procure,  by  purchase  or  otherwise,  at  the 
place  of  location,  not  less  than  one  thousand  acres  of  land,  in- 
clusive of  any  lands  owned  by  the  State  of  Montana,  as  a  site 
for  said  University. 

Section  7.  The  State  Board  of  Education  shall  have  such 
powers  as  may  be  necessary  to  carry  the  provisions  of  this  law 
into    effect. 

Section  8.  All  acts  and  parts  of  acts  in  conflict  herewith 
are   hereby   repealed.
