Preface, 

The inecrirtions in this book were coried frcxii the 
grave atones in the cer.etery fcrniexly "belon^jintj to the 
Gibbonsville congregation of the Reformed churcli in Amer- 
ica, This church wen started In 1315 at Gibbonsville 
v.-hich later became Ve..., T^.oy.pnd is now Watervliet, New 
York, Tlie connection of the cemetery witli the eld church' 
Ih and for many yeart^ hv.a been very remote, ^.a the Reformed 
church congregation does not nov exlot, although it ii re- 
ported to ua that the Presbyterian church V.nown aa the Jer- 
mo.in Memorial is the direct deBcend?.nt of the old church. 

At the time the inecriptiona 'vere coiied the cemetery 
adjoined the United States Araena.l on the aouth v;est. It 
had long been abandoned for burial purj^oaes i^nd was In a 
state of gross neglect. Some otones A-ere broken ;i.nd the 
pieces so small or so scattered that copying was impossible. 
Other stones had fallen and were wholly or partly covered 
with earth. The inacriptione were first copied by the 
Rev. C. P. Evans, TTatervliet, in Reptem.ber 191'?, and were 
compa,red and corrected in the cemetery by the State Libra- 
ry in October and November 1913. Tliey number between T"5 
and "^OO. Ilftighbors reported in November ISll that steps 
were under viay to tiove the cenietery.
