future  development  area.

of  Church  Street  at  waterfront.   Some  excavated  material  and  contaminated  river

Excavation  History  Metro  Toronto  Library  (5E  corner  -  Parliament  and  Front)  1986 
tars  encountered,  several  other  excavations  have  occurred  in  the  area  with  no 


reference  to  tar. 


Visible  Wastes  Coal  tar  contamination  discovered  during  excavations  and  subsequent 
investigations  for  Metro  Toronto  Library  site  and  26  Berkeley  Street  site.  Several 
underground  tanks  with  PAH  and  phenol  contents  discovered  at  26  Berkeley  site,  Coal 
tar  observed  in  sub  basement  of  Toronto  Free  Theatre  (26  Berkeley  Street; 

Odour   Strong  tar  odours  in  the  basement  of  Canadian  Opera  Company;  air  sampling  in 
in  December  1986  showed  PAHs  present,  but  reported  to  be  stronger  in  summer  anc 
distinct  throughout  block. 

Water  Pollution   Water  contamination  seen  during  excavations  and  investigations  at 
Metro  Toronto  Library  site  and  at  26  Berkeley  Street  site.   PAHs  present  in  waters

Off-Site  Disposal  Areas:     The  tar  was  sold  to  contractors  and  removed  by  barrels, 
train  tankers  and  pipelines.   In  1927  some  of  the  waste  water  containing  light  oils 
and  tars  was  discharged  to  Lake  Onturio.   Disposal  site  of  excavated  material  from 
Library  site  to  Maple  Landfill  in  keele  valley.

Visible  Wastes  Concrete  blocks  from  building  demolition  show  tar  stains  and  residue 
Odour  Minor  odours  on-site  and  strong  odours  in  sanitary  sewer  and  in  groundwater 

monitoring  wells  installed  by  consultant  conducting  site  assessment , 

Water  Pollution   Strong  odours  in  wells  indicate  groundwater  contamination,  no 

evidence  of  surface  water  contamination

wells  are  located  600  m  north  at  Ingersoll  Avenue  &  Huron  Street  and  900  m  south  at 
the  south  end  of  Victoria  (used  very  little).   Out  of  town  wells  supply  major  source. 

Wells  located  approx.  5  km  from  town  supply  the  majority  of  Town  water 

Site  Investigations  Consultant  retained  to  undertake  site  assessment  (study  onooinc' 

6.  Cownents/Remerks:    Development  in  the  area  has  been  postponed  until  the  completion 
on  the  consultant '3  site  assessment  study 

7.  Off-Site  Disposal  Areas:     No  known  off-site  disposal  areas.   Some  on-site  disposal 
of  coal  waste  (klinkers)  was  evident  from  consultant's  investigation.   There  was, 
however,  an  old  dump  by  the  railroad  trucks  at  the  south  end  of"  Buftcjj  Street .   1 1 
closed  sometime  around  1920  arid  may  have  received  some-  waste.
