Dear Miss Jafffe,
i
P.S.
Friedländer, in Garmel, Cali:^. ,
USA, leben bezw. lebten.

Jahr seinen 90sten Geburtstag in aer ochweiz gefeiert habe.
Garbaty i:t.

Liebe Miss Jafffe,
Ich habe Ihren Brief vom 2y. Oktober erhalten und möchte
ihn gleich beantv/orten. Ich habe nämlich die von Ihnen
gesuchte Adresse von Dr. Bernhard Jaffe gefunden:
Plurv.'eg li
Bottmingen , Basel
Schweiz (GH)
I am afraid
you are wasting your time! ' l-i-^..^-^ i^yt^-r^iiU. ('■-^-u^^ {)
Die Adresse von Mrs. Herbert H. (.Katie) Schaps ist:
Carmelo x 12th St.
Carmel, Calif.
P. 0. Box 2324 USA
I just walked in on her - after -jO years, and it was
just like yesterday!
mitteilen, v/as Sie gebrauchen können?! Sehr viel ist es ja
sowieso nicht. Also, good luck! Mit besten Grüssen

Liebe Charlotte Koch,

weigert hatte.
^«^'%äSh^?S^°§cKl5!6«l§fS?l^eil*ire^e^i^Ii?§!^Lrer: Adresse Sie
macht hatte. Fast alle Nachkommen in diesem Jaffe-Zweig heissen
Bernhard, was me'.ne Forschung noch erschwert hat.
Ihnen selbst abhaengen,, bzw. J-hren Angehoerigen.
fuellen, mir grosse Befriedigung geben wuerde. £-s fehlen die Woch-
kommen von M8S Kommerzienrat Samuel Jaffe und seiner Gattin Emilie.
Ihren Grosseltern.
Brief vom 27. Juli 1980 mit einem Extrablatt als Anlage.

that you have "finished your first long v/orl: of art ajid I am sure
you must he proud to have been able to accomplish such an intricate
job as this one. I am happy that I was able in a small v/ay to
help you along to reach your goal - too bad that v/e had no contact
before this or you v.-ould have had Bernhard Jafffts address much
earlier.
Da Ihre vielen Fragen hier deutsch vor mir liegen, werde icn
gleich deutsch antwortelj.
Richtungen. Alles v.'as ich v/eiss, sind also nebulöse i.indheits-
her!
etwas.
ausgerichtet! !
angev/i esen ge';,'esen.

1. Jafax-Jaffray
namen "J _
lebten, nannten v/ir uns auch so. I'iein Bruder Ernst, in Atlanta
hatten, und so nannten v.lt uns Jaffray - no problem in t.ie US!
1888 geboren, ^enau 20 Jahre unterschiedlich.
A propos
einiges da stehen, i-ieine ^iutter hiess Dagny, mein zweiter Name.
Ihrer Stelle einmal schreiben - she can't say more than no! Leider
bisher unverheiratet, they are too busy! Keine Tochter studiert
Chinesisch d.h. Sinologie, der ältere Gerraanistik und Phiblosiphie,
der jüngere, Elektro-Kechaniker von 3eruf, zur Zeit Navigation
und austronesische Sprachen. Also sparen •■ir Ihnen schon einige
Seiten Arbeit!
Hoffentlich geht es Ihnen gut, so you can keep up t?ie works!
Herzliche Grüsse

I
Dear Kiss Jafffe,
Finally I have been able to take the afternoon off to ansv/er your
letters of May IS and May 24. I have more or less recovered from
my operation, my children have left again for their respective
universities, the heatv/ave is over - so I am trying to catch up with
neglected business.
To start v.-ith I 'vant to tell you that I spent a fev/ days in Zurich
1 with my daughter, and v/e had a short and enjoyable visit v.lth ay
I cousin Aniela Jaffe. '.Ve had not met in half a century - she has
very little time to spare since she has a full schedule and has to
save her strength for her work. Naturally we also talked about
you and your v/ork and that she had been contacted by yoij. She said
she sent you that film you w:oote me about, but that she remembers
so little because she has had practically no contact -.Ith anybody
kin fifty years or more. Also she is so preoccupied with her patiente
and her v/ork that she is trying to drop extracurricular activities
rather than take on ne\: ones. So it is surely not disinterest if she
does not v/ant to get invovieu in any correspondence, rather a question
of time and strength. She remembers naxnes of persons and knew them
while to me they are just vague names - because of the difference in
age. She also said that her sister Gabi was not well at a±ll, and
that she has had no nev;s from her sister Katherine iCurtz in years.
She ]aiev;$ that her mother had been keepsing diaries, it seems it v/^s
her own suggestion at a time that lledv.lg must have been feeling very
low. I seem to remember that my aunt had a terribly shaky handv-riting
so I can im-agine what you are up against.
Well now do-.n to facts. Regarding a family tree: One of the fev/
attractions to us (m.y brothers and me) at family meetings at "Tajite
Lina", the oldest sister of my father, v.-as a tree v/ith Eicheln or
somthing that could be opened ^ had photos in the inside. This is as
much as I can remember -" I v.Tote you earlier about a lot of v/omen in
dark clothes (child's point of view', I don't knov/ how long ago. I
^have never seen or knovm anything about any Stammbäume in any form -
not by you or anyone else. In fact I v;as quite surprised to read in
your letter that you have been working on a family tree since 1920.
Incidentally, ■•'here did you live before you moved to England? Should
my parents ever have received anything like it, it probably v/ent dovm
the drain with most everything else in the course of the years, siy the
v/ay, the documents I have, very few indeed, v/ill not amount to much
for you, because they are certificates of "birth, death, etc. of people
•••hom you have already registered. At the moment, I have no access to
them, because v/e have changed things around and I have to look for t|iem.
Maybe this photo of Anielas v/as a photo of that tree at Lina's, maybe
not.
/
I definitely knov/ that there v/ere 13 children, that my father v/as the
youngest, that Ludv/ig v/as the fourteenth, bu-*" as you say, some may
have died v/hen they v/ere very young or children. Nov/ to the different
survivors. 1. Lina Marcto'/ald - I told you about her daughters.
2. Max - not knov.-n to me.
j>. Olga Kunk - I remember the name, not more. I do very clearly
remember the name "Dr. Dora (.Dorchen) Use", because she v;as
known for her studies on butterflies (.again a fact impressingfe.
child) . Aniela also remembered her, she had polio and was not
married, she thought she had lived in Kunich. In the telephone
directory there are a dozen people by the name of "Use", llo
idea to whom she v/as related.
4. ,/anda - not Icnov/n to me.

ZUa.
Johanna draumarm. /Most likely, Fritz Traumaim was their son, a
lawyer and friend of Alfons, but not living in iierlin. He v;as
a wellknovTi judge (v.'here?) and has v.Titten some lav/ books I believe.
He was married to Else '■■ho had been married before to some "-uaron",
and "as a singer, and very religious. They had tv,o children,
Beate and r.ichael, and emigrated to i>razil, ^j{^(5h;3^'eGter-Siedl\ing.
Ily mother, and later my brother Ernst, used to correspond v.dth
her. I happen to have tv;o letters to my mother which I am enclosing.
According to her age stated in the letter she is probably no longer
alive. She hasfvery good handwriting, easy to read! I have no
further news, aiv/ays rae-^nt to pick up v.ith them again, if the
address is still the same. Don't know anything about Johanna or
her husband.
6. Hedv.lg Schlossmann, Kiel, husbandb name? Maybe you have heard
from Klaus Schlossiiann in the meantime, strangely enough I have
not, also have not contacted him since my letter. For all I
can gather: There v;ere 4 children: Elfriede (whom I knev/ very
v/ell ""and whom I have also met again v/hen I got married in Munich).
She died some years ago, was not married. She v/as often at my
parf-nts house in Berlin, Bleibtreustrasse 26. Incidentally, Emy
and Joseph Jafffe did not live in the same house •■•ith us, but
lived in the Meineckestrasse. — CJeorg Schlossmajin. He v;as
married to a v/oman who turned Nazi and left him together with
their son. He then lived in some castle, I think he was supposed
to be somev/hat strange, and died, don't knov; v;here and v/hen. I
knov/ that Klaus Schl. knev/ him, v/e talked about him once. Then
"Hlers-Alice Schlossmann vho married OttoJ" they lived in Kiel. Sonsi
mann V.'olfgang, married to Kargaretha, no children. Hans Mersmann,
not married. All i-^ersmanns died in the past fev/ years, noone
in the family got any of their belongings or papers or has any
contact with their strange heirs. They are all buried in Kiel.
The fourth son is the father of Klaus and his siäer Hanne v/ho
are both married and have each five children. But I do hope
that Klaus himself v/ill c,cknov/ledge all this and give you all
the necessary dates. My father, -hen he was a young man, was
in Kiel at one time to study, law, the old ochlossmann v/as
^ professor, I don't kno\.' which faculty.
7. Martha ;ergas CBerglas?) - 2 sons, I wrote aüout th^-t before.
8. Alfons - everything known
9. Elise Roesler - I remember the name and also seem to remember
that she v/as mentally sick, maybe she lived in or nearby Berlin.
I re;.-ember the name Max, v/hether he was son or husband, I don't
know. Aniela also knev/ Elise Roesler and that she v/as somev/hat
disturbed. At v/hich point she mentioned that there were a number
of "borderline cases'' in the family. Since my daughter grinned,
I told her not to take that for r.n excuse for any of her actions.
Don't kno anything about child --en of Roesler.
10. Ludwig - everything known
11. Georg - everything knovm
You may be right that all children were born in Posen, because my
father was born there as I can see from his birth certificate. But
at least the mother, -^milie, died in Berlin. I am ennlosing a copy
of a death certificate. I don't knov/ about Samuel.
Nov/ you mention about the contact of the family several times. I
think that there has not been much contact except betv/een the families
in Berlin f.i., or Kiel etc. They lived in different spheres, I guess,
most of them intermarried -.-ith "ArierHn", and the generations vere
years apart, 'xolfgang ilersmann who was many years older tVian I am,
used to call me "his aunt", becaur:e his mother was my cousin! That v/as
nov; when I lived in liunich, I ne.er met hin as a child. I-Iy mother
v/as c.lso many years younjer Ähan her sisterain-law^ and maybe not
too interested in the family.
Bfou men re-,'~raore names: EHxh Knoch, I remember Grete jvnoch -
«10 idea v;ho she is - just a name. Köngler, Schmidt - don't knov/ them,
'i'ranz Seliger and Uli - it just occurs to me that they could be
relatives of Hedv/ig's, was she born "Henoch"? Please don't add more
to the family than there are already!!
Nov; in digging up all t'^ese memories, XHicK±ktHg I had an idea. I
guess it v/as my grandfather Samuel '.-ho founded a "Pamilienstiftung" .
I don't knov; v;ho first headed it, but I know that Alfons took over
at some time, probably at the time that he pointed out that he v/as
the oldest member of the family. Have you anything in üedv/ig's
papers about that Stiftung? I knov; that they had meetings and all
sorts of people shov;ed up that we had never heard of before, while
^y younger brother and I vere too young to ida. take part, ray brother
Ernst was asked to them. But he probably wouldn't laiov; about it.
If any lists of the na^nes of the grandchildren v/ho received the re-
maining pennies could be found, you would get a lo5 of information.
Ky husband says that \volfgang i'^ersmann took oTzier after Alfons left,
so maybe Klaus Schlossmann would know anything about that. Frank
Herrmann probably not, maybe his mother v;ho probably v.'ill not answer.
If necessary I could try tm get some information in Berlin - my hus-
band may know where they may keep such information.
Marie Louise Garbaty v;ill most likely come to i-iunich as usual - but
I hear from her only at her arrival. I shall try to get some inforraa-
tion out of her, but it v,dll be some time yet. Louise ^iktin plans
to be in Europe some time in July, and v;ill come to i'^unich later,
maybe in August. I don't knov; yet v;hat her plans are.
kDoes -Prank Herrmann knov.- v;ho I am? Naturally he could not remember
"me personally, gust as little as I can remember him - he was a little
boy, v;hen he left. I have no idea that I helped my uncle Alfons v;ith
correspondence, but it is very likely that I did - I went through
the "Handelsschule" at the time.
One more question to you, since I knov/ nothing about your person -
you wrote that Alfons asked you in 19^4 for the family tree- so he
must have knov;n you and that you were malcing up this family history.
I think that I have answered all your questions, to the best of my
knowledge, and maybe you can fill some holes a^ain. Kaybe this long
letter v;ill make up for the v;aiting time v;hich unfortunately could
not be helped.
■ ith Ifindest regards.

t^s;l§.. I am quite pleased with it, regarding contents and pre-

D;;;iaa^ very incomplete. You will see for yourself what in-
formation is missing. Hedwig never merjtions the name "nirsekorn"
at all. iiev'oe Weise remcmuers something. about the descendants of
Bruno:)5X31814X Heymann, Johanna Koehne and the Hirsekorns. - As to
Erika and Edith Stettiner they could well be alive in New Yoi^ as
I already told you over the pj^one. An Erika Stettiner went into the
Kindergarten in Berlin-Vtilmorsdorf about 1912 with 52. sister, who
was born 190?. I put Erika 's date of birth also around 1907, it
works out all ripht with the date of birth for her mother Martha
whol/teorn lööl. I do not know itrtka Stettiner's married name, could
be Strauss. She had J children, not one. Perhpas «aise knows the
addref5ses of ikrika and Edith in New lork.

Dorchen Use. I hope to secure her death certificate, assuming that
she has «rown wings herself by noV'. Having been stricken down by
polio, she deserves to fly about in Heaver..' She would be about m.v
age, so there is a chance that she is still alive, not necessarily
in Munich. - Interesting that Wanda Jalfe married tack into her

little missing. ,^
Well, that iö wbnt 1 have act ieved so far, Do not pay much attent-|

papres 18a, b, etc. may undergo changes, for instance Martha Bergas
and Eliae Koesler will not share the same page, because it is mis-
leading. Dr.Alfons page comes between them. At the moment I am still
experimenting with the presentation, tryincr to find t\'.Q best method
of fit"^ting your branch into the existing family tree, ^t is difficult,

cannot imaicine what it ii.eant to me to see for the first time the
death certificates for Schiee Jaffe and i:;milie Jaffe. I lost ^H my
documents, even the original family tree, compiled 60 years ago by
myself and my late sister. I lived in Uachau and had to flee in the
night before the concentration camp was opened, leaving behind ail
my belongings. Thank Roodness, a Swiss cousin had a photocopy of the
original tree, which tie sent me after the wir, otherwise 1 could not
have re-started working on family history in m.y retirement. For more
than 30 years 1 was preoccupied keeping myself and an on-h-^ned nef-hew
alive. I he 2 documents you sent me confirm the dates on my tree whici
I had not documented so far. Ihis is wonderful, as all my work poes
to archives where it is kept for posterity and accessible to scholars
for furthtr research. It was very far-slphted of your father to have
photocopies of the two old death certificates made in 19i^8.I am going
to return all the material ycu send tne , of course.

PA,
Ibere is do shortage of work. You will be surprised to hear what I
babe been doing since Klaus Schlotsmann failed to answer my March (!)
1982 letter. I discovered 125 persjnpl hsnd-written letters of the
famous historian Prof. Philipp Jnffe (1819-1870) in private possession
in London, rescued the ori^insls from that family, had them photo-
copied rVn^, edited them , tosrethpr v.ith a aozen biographies on the
man I had collected in tt.e Inst years and don--'ted all tliis T.Pteriil
to -archives in New York. 8 important letters were missing ■ rr.onp the
originals; I traced 4 of them ai the Jev.ish Theolop:ical Seminary
of America and ♦ne 4 others at the Staatsbibliothek 64^ Berlin .'nd
succeeded in securing cofies. This is the kind 01 letearch I enjoy?
far more than begging strangers for information. Unfortunately, the
latter is part of the job. - I had out of the blue a request for
3 family trees (of the other Jaffes) from an unknown New York family
who sent me a cheque. So I had to satisfy them which also ent-^ils
quite a bit of work. The packing and posting of parcels tires me. -
I still have to find the last "BernhHrd" of the other family tree,
he is dead, his son is supposed to live somewhere in USA.
It is very good of you to say that you enjoyed my telephone
call. I myself thought that I behaved rather rudely. I interrupted
you once or twice, so as to impress on you that £he purpose of my
call was two-fold: 1)1 wanted you to contact Klaus Schlossmann
(which you very kindly did) and 2) I wantea you to know how useful
the 2 documents you sent me are and beg you to send more (what you
have not done so far).
Have you heard from Luise Tiktin in the mean time? I hope she
was not seriously ill and unable to travel. I owe Jjjer a letter.
in case she turned up.
Again many thanks,
Please remember me to her

iJear Mrs. Koch,
I herewith enclose the material you sent me so far, i.e. the
two photostats of the death certif ic^.tes for Schiee Jaffe and Emilie
Jaffe any the two letters Else Traumann wrote to your brother Ernst
from Brazil. I an pleased to tell you that Mrs. Michael Traumann
answered my enquiry by return of post, givinc me all the details
known to her. Michael and Jane Trsumann are still at the same
address in Holandia PR C.P.7I Brazil. They h' ve 6 children, Jilse
Traumann died in Sept. 1979« Michael's sister Beate Masuet lives
in Rio de Janeiro, h.-?s t> ßrown-up children, 2 daughters ana 1 son,
all unmarried. Jane Traumann gave^me her address, because ehe thinks
that Beate knov.'S mere of the Jaffe side than they themselves do. I
have written to her. -^t is unnecessaiy to let you have the oates
for the Tr-^uraanns to-day, as you will find them on the family tree
pspje, concerninp- the Traumanns, later on (God willing). I am always
awaie of my as-e. Jane Trauaann ' s information coci-l icstes matters in
80 far, as Fritz Iraumann was not the only child of David Ernst
Traumann (judge) and his wife Johanna, nee Jaffe, one of your father's]
sisters. Eritz was the Jrd child of the couple. -Jane does not mention
whether there were more children than 5» nor aoes she give details
for the 2 older children. I snail h^^ve to find out.
■'■t is amazing that the 'I'raumanns answered before Klgus Schloss-
mann or you did. I still have not heard from him. I only as'-ced him
for information about his next-of-kin, nothing complicated. The most
important thing for me is to know for sure that the Mersmanns were
not directly related to tho Jaffes, but over the f chlossmanns. Your
first letters to me seemed to suggest that one of the Jaffe sisters
marriea a Mersmann, but I think that is wrong. It was a Schlossmann
female wiio married into the Mersmann family. Do you a-rree? I must
avoid an error like this one on my family tree; whether a date or two
will be mtKsin^ here and there does not matter so much. As far as I
know 1 hf've only once maüe a vital mistake of this kind by marrying
Lotte Stone's mother ti^ the wrong Dr. Joseph Jaffe.' I married her off
to i:r.,jur. Joseph Jaffe, but it was Dr , med. Jose r.h Jaffe whom she
married. I knew that she married a cousin Jaffe, both Cr. Josephs were
her cousins, so I may be forgiven, tut if this fundamental error had
remained undiscovered, it would h^^ve led to a number of other mis-
takes.
Lid your two New York cousins and Luise Tiktin turn up? Luise
is waiting for a copy of the tree. I had promised to send her one,
but I should prefer to send her the revised version on which I am
working at the present time.
irlease do write. 1 cannot do anything more about Klaus
Schlossmann. 1 44.U . • ^
with kind regards and thanks for the iraumann

Yours sincerely,

x'he place of birth of the "brothers cjid sisters v;as Posen, though iiaise
mentioned that some may "be born on sone "Herrschaft" v/ith a Polish name.
I seem to reraenber that my father used to tell us children sometimes of
a "Gut" v.'here they spent tine in their childhood.
As to the n\irober of children - I have no evidence of the number fifteen
other then by tales - but surely these v.-ere true and v/ith 15 children,
four can easily have died after birth or in young years. liarie Louise

I remember the family HeymoJin, because Alice ,my father's niece but older
than he v;as) v.'as friendly v;lth my family. Ernst K. married Lotte von
Gramon, had a son and a daughter, emigrated to Holland, v/here I visited
him on ray v/ay to the States in 1939. You give his address in Kisseldorf
where he must have been living after the war, v/hether he is still alive
or what became of his family, I don't knov/. I can look up in a telephone
book if he is still registered in Düsseldorf. Bruno and Lisa H. used
to live in Berlin, I seem to vaguely remember that Lisa sta.yed there, she
alv/ays v/orked in homes I believe and was considered a little strange (One
of many!), and Bruno may have gone^'Prance - all very vague memories of
mine from before the v/af. (''Aged's ^o^b<,^ h..\y <'^ue ^ ^eJi i'h ij^fcJl (J^^ /~)
Hirsekorn: Alfred, Alice - lived in 1':q\: York, she v/as a photographer
and in former years friendly -.Ith ^^.atharine Kurz who was also a photo-
grapher. Maise should know about them, but couldn't ask her anymore, I
have an idea that they do not live anymore.
Schlossmann; I a^a dropped a note to Kls.us Schl. asking him to let you
knov/ v/hether he was "illing to let you have the information you need,
or else to tell you not to count on it - I hope he v/ill do it.
your statement is correct that Hedv.dg (my father's sister) married
Schlossmann, and their daughter Alice married Otto liersmann. So you
are correct in saying that Hersmann married into the Pamily Jaffe. I
do hope that Klaus will tell you all about his faiaily.
Now to the docwnents I wrote about. The boxes of my mother which are
availc-ble to me contain only papers concerning ray parents and kEx the
children, and documents from, my mother's family, her parents etc. Aiiong
these I found some time a^jo the tv/o things I sent you - everything else
is recent and of no gxat interest to your work, all knovm dates. Have no
idea v.'here these old documents came from, and they v/ere folded the way
I sent them to you (so I can't t3ke the blame for that!), ^hould I find
anything else of interest to you, I shall surely for^-vard it, but at present
don't count on it. The letters from Else Travimann were available to me
because I kept then along v.lth others v;hich arrived at my mother's death.
I am filling in some dates on your pajes - as much as I can get together.
I spent many hours trying to get these dates together, so I am closing
now to get the letter off, because I won't have time in the next few
days. Also I don't think
any spedific questions.
I have any more information unless you have
The letter of Else Traiomann contains soir.e more information of Interest.

Well, I am in an English-speaking mood nov,-, since I had to re-read
all your past letters with many questions - to some of them I have
an ansv/er nov;. Hy cousins Marie Louise Garbaty and Katharine hanner-
fried v/ere in Iiunich and Tegernsee for a v.'h£le, and off and on I
tried to squeeze soi.ie information out of them. Actually, liarie Louise
knov/s all the answers, but v.'hat can you do v;hen she tries to get off
the subject after a v/hile - I don't v.'ant to be a nuisance to the point
where she throws me out -/hen I visit her!! iiy son Michael visited'her
once and told her hov; important he thought it v/as to go back to the
roots, particularly in the world of today. Of course, he could not
ask her about any details he doesn't know about himself - simply im-
pressed her by his interest. Louise Tiktin v/as here and stayed v/ith
me which I greatly enjoyed. Of course she doesnit knov.' much about tlae
family except for the people v;ho lived in Lerlin in her youth. Strangely
onough dhe spent some time in Italy vith a cousin of hers Vliving in
USA) v/ho was visited also by a former Germaui friend now living in
Rolandia! I asked her if the name "Traumann" was mentioned by chance,
she didn't knov/ except that they v.-ere talking about an old German lady
v/ho used to be a singer and was active in music - small v/orld!
AnjA-.'ay, here are a fev- facts which I gathered:
Stettiner: Maria Louise has no address or cont:.ct. Erika Strauss is
a different person altogether 'you read of her in iledvvdg's diary), no
relative, lirilra Stettiner v/as married tv/ice, has one daughter, didn't
get any names. ■*■ Edith never married. I remember them myself from Nev/Iork
'hen I liEved there in 195S - along time ago: And also from r.y childhood.
I have an old address in my mother's address cook, it mu.jt be 40 years
old, the house probably doesn't even exist: Martha Stettiner C'..ho died)
98-59 65th Road, Forest Hills, KY.
Kax Jaffe: Alre-dy^l-arie Louise told a strange story abo^t him. Inci-
dentally s>.e thinks he was the oldesi;, older than Lina, but has no dates.
Vihen they v/ere children, off and on a man came secretely to their father,
poorly clad aad hungry, and they waomehov/ heard a ''Dienstboten ''rumor that
it v/as a brother of tiieir father who had no money and v/as married to a
strange woman (Mesalliamce) or some such story - in any case it v/as a
big secret, he got some money, and disappeared again. That's all - but
probably so.
"ianda JaffS: Kaise knev immediately that she married her uncle, Gustav
Karkuse! (I had never heard of all these people in all my life!). 'Wanda
(my father's sister) married Gustav, brother of -c-milie (my grandmother).
Dorothea Use: Her mother's name Rose, liaise seems to think she v/as
V/anda's daughter according to« the notes I made, but maybe she is wrong -
you have her as daughter of Olga Munk??!!
Elise Roesler: You mention "Röngler" - tie correct name is Römpler.

England 24 November 1982.
this is not an answer to your letter of 4 October 1982 nor the
type of letter you usually get from me - full of questions - but
jiust a pre-X-mas message with the Greetings of the season and a big
Thank you" for your collaboration. I know that the subject which
occupies my mind is really alien to you, all the more I appreciate
your efforts to help me. You can be sure that all the details you
have criven me in your last letter and enclosures will be used though
I have no intention to discuss them to-day. I think you deserve to
be left in peace over the X-mas period.
I Jotted down a few things which may be of interest to you
without neeaing an answer. First of all, Klaus Schlossmann gas given
at long last the information 1 had asked for in ^arch this year. As
his letter only arrivea beginning of November I hnve not ^et worked
through his material, piving another important job priority I had
started while waiting for his reply.
You will be surprised to he^^r that I had the courage to write
to Marie Luise Garbaty, asking her all the direct questions you did
not dare to put to her during her stay in Tegernsee during the summer,
i thought by myself the worst that could happen would be that she
left my letter unanswered. But no - Marie Luise 's reply came almost
by return of post and her letter is signed "With kindest personal
regards".... She answers all my questions best she can, more or less
from memory as you do. 1 do not think she ever bothered about dates.
Nevertheless, the Dr. Ludwig page looks much better now and I am
pleased. I attribute her change of heart to the possibility that the
praise of my pedigree on the "other" family Jaffe reached her ears
in the mean time. Several devoted descendants of this family reported
that they had called on or corresponded with Louise Jaffe (formerly
Liselotte) in New York thanks to me. By the way, Marie Luise confirms
that the name of Elise Roesler's husband was Max, so he must have been
killed in World War I.
I found out the date and place of death for Dr. Dora Use. She
died on 21.10.1979 in the Altenheim Rote Kreuz Betreuungs?Ges. m.b.H.
Westendstr.174, Muenchen 21. Sad that you and your mother lost con-
tact with her, though you were so near.
I am most grateful to you for the Rolandia address. Michael
Trauyann is not interested, but his sister Beate isand kept the
Jaffe documents she found among her late mother's papers. She sent
me copies of Jacob Jehuda's Last Will, written in I8I3 in Miloslaw.
tie is our mutual ancestor, see p.1. Also a copy of Samuel Jaffe's
Last Will, your fii;randfather, comprising bO pages, written in 1879
in Posen. I sent both documents to the LBI archives in New Yorlf for
keeps, so i feel relieved. I would not have dreamt in my wildest
dreams to find "acob Jehuda's Last will in Brazil.
This is all for to-day, except wishing you and >our family once
more a Happy X-mas and New Year. I hope that you have recovered by
now completely from the unfortunate car-accident. Please keep in
touch.
with kindest regards
Yours sincerely,

Dear Kiss Jaffe,
Thank you very much for your letter of January 27 ana the
various papers v/hich arriied a fev; days later.
I read everything very carefully and found it quite inter-
esting - alsoni marvel at your patience 3Jid hard v.'ork v;ith
v.hich you have carried things together evidently over some
decades. At this moraent, there is nothing nev. that I can
add or tell you - but I am enclosing the tv.'o documents that
you were asking for to send them on to Hew York. I had them
copied just in case anybody s.iould ever be interested to see
them. Incidentally, I also have a photograph of my grandfather
and grandmother, originals, v/hich I have to look for. For
the past tv/o months, I had a young man stt^ying with us in
the room v/hich is usually my "office" so I had no access to
things (.one ret.3on for my late reply) and next v/eek v/e are
going on a trip to Spain - so I do hope to be able to assort
a lot of papers when I get back. At the moment I have no
major projects for this suirüner after this trip now - of course
you never can tell what shov/s upl So I hope to get busy on that,
^■Vhen I get back, I shall stop in t'le Monumenta and look at
the v/ork of P-iilipp Jaffe and the photographs. I v/onder v/here

Socking, June 9, 198-^
Dear lüss Jafffe,
Thank you very much for your letter of Kay 29 and the souvenirs i
too bad they don't show _ date - they must be c-ntiques by today's
standards! I am also enclosin£; a postcard in this letter which
I h-:»ve bought for you in Toledo. This synagog--e is one of the
most p'.iantastic pieces of art I ever sav - maybe you knov; it your-
self. I v;as thinV:ing of you, but also hoped th^.t you v;ould not
dig up any more relations in Spain!! You never can tell...,
Nov; to your letter. Gabi Herruann had evidently tried to reach
me by telephone to tell me of her husband* death, and then vrrote
a letter. I am sorry to hear that she is in such poor shape, it
is hard to tell by her letters though she alv/ays mentions that
she has aged very much in recent years. I Icnew of Fritz's sicloiess,
','hich must have gotten v.'orse in the past year. I have no contact
to her sons, maybe I'll v/rite to the older son Frank. That is one
of the reasons v;hy information is so scarce or hard to get - the
fc.mily has not tried to keep up any cont.-cts, in the contrary they
seem to have avoided to keep in touch! Of course, I a:a in the only
one in Germany, like living on an island!
You mention that you may be coming to Kunich betv.-een J-uly 7 and 15.
That in fact is the main reason for my early reply. I have several
questions before I can give you an advice v/here to stay. Unfortu-
nately I air. not in a position to offer you and your friend to stay
with us, because v;e live in an apartment and s^ace is limited. Also
v/e depend on the car to move around. I '..-ould like to know if you
have to or vi sh to spend much time in tov.-n, and prefer to be in the
city v/here transportation is very i,ood with "U-Sahn", a brandnev/
net of undergroimd, buses, taxis. Or do yo^ come by car ajid are
independent of transportation? There is also a train connection
to many places (Starnberg f. i. is our next stop, but I have to
drive there) - provided you v.'ant to take such rides. Since you
seem to know Munich you v;ill also Icnov/ that it spreads all over!
Another q.uestion is the price of a hotel - and the conveniences you
require. Germany is not" cheap, particularly not the hotels, and
since I have "customers" every year, friends fron the States etc.,
I try to find out beforehand '..■hat they expect. I shall be very
hap^y to give you any helo you need, and also to drive you around
while you are here. So let me know the details ac soon as you
have decided if you are coming.
Ky Husband and I v/ould enjoy meeting you, so here is ho jing we
shall see you here in July. With best regards,
Yours ,

Dear Miss Jaff§,
''macht so etv.'as jem.
Texas komme. Vielleicht können Sie dazu etv/as sagen?
linach meiner US Reise I hope).

was denn die Kosten wären. Vielleicht können Sie mir noch vor
meiner Reise Bescheid geben.

Dear Mrs. Koch,
Many thanks for your letter of 24th March 1984, which I hasten to
answer because you leave for the U.S.A. soon.
( I am glad I had a sign of life from you, tho\igh I had not written
since November 1985. It is exactly as you suggest; I have just sufficient
strength to type the most necessary letters and leave the rest.
Of course you can have the most up-to-date version of the Jaffe
family tree. I can have a photocopy made for you any time. The cost
^ 5 ^(X'wlll be i4ftig5, which covers the expenses. Please let me know whether this
is alright for you, and when you want me to send you the copy. I think it
this important for your children to have my "Meisterwerk"; it is really
the work of a lifetime.
I'm glad to have heard from you that Loise Tiktin is alri^jht and has
received my lon^ lettey. You must be thrilled with the prospect of seeing
all your friends and relations in U.S.A. again. What about your brothers?
You will remember that they left my letters to both of them unanswered.
Bo you think that you can tackle them about dates etc.? I remember that I
sent you a copy of page 18(i) which deals with yovir next-of-kin. Maybe you
can take this page with you to the U.S.A. You will see tl-iat there are still
a number of gaps concerning your brothers' wives, children and grandchildren.
It would be marvellous if you could fill these gaps while you are in U.o.A«
I occasionally telephone Gabi Herrmann;
confused. We are all living too long.
she is alrißht but a little
When will you be back from the U.S.A.? I should like very much to
visit Berlin and Munich this year, health permitting.
With every good wish for a successful trip, and kindest regards to
you and your husband.

Dear Miss Jafffe,
I am ansv;ering your letter of April 2ncl which could tell you
what a v/onderful time it had in the United States!! I had
taken it -long to answer it - but s.s things went never got
around to it. So I am rushing to make up for lost tin-.e.
I hop4 you are all right and that your plans for a trip to
Berlin and Munich can be realized this year. We have no
plans for a trip so far, since my husband has to feel better
than he does at the moment, and I v/as gone for six v.'eeks and
enjoy home - except for the weather. Let me know if and
when you come to Munich, and v;here we could meet!
■i^nienever you are ready to let me have your "Meisterv;erk" as
you cr;ll it, please let me know. Also v.'here you v:ant me to
send the amoimt you request, and really include all costs
involved.
I hope to get all the data of my brother's Kurt family - did

Tiear Charlotte,
;; ny thankB for your letter of August 5th which I found awaiting' me on
my return from holiday. I am sorry that you tried to ring up in vain.
Yes, Klaus Schlossmann asked for a copy of the family tree some months
ago. He was probably far-si.'+ited enou-h to realise that it was desirable
to possess a copy for his children's sake.
I surfest that you wait before purchasing your own copy, until I h3.ve
replaced the first 20 -odd paces by wore complete ones. As usual I ajn trying
to make the impossible possible, despite complicated research and oosta.
As fcir as your ov.n branch on pa,« 18 is concerned, I know now the exict dates
for the mysterious Max Jaffe, for V'anda and Gustav, for the ."^unks etc. - do
not risk me how,
I am disappointed tliat you returned from U..;.A. empty handed. I had
hoped that you would be able to sound your brothers during youx stay. It is
so easy for the living descendants to {jive information about their next-of-
kin,, i.e. wives, children, and grandchildren, and so difficult to find all
these details for the departed, which I have to do all the time. Ifeybe, with
the memories of your trip still fresh in your mind you can add, yourself, a
few details on page 18(i).
I don't think thnt any member of your branch Is particularly interested
in family history, but I'm glad to hepj: that your dau-hter is. I met Gabi
Herrmann on ny holiday and also talked to Fraiüc H. ovor the phone. c;?.bi is
fairly well, but a little foriTetful. I'm afraid she has difficulty in
managing on her own in her nice little house. The au jKiir girls come and go.
My Houston nephew, with whom I spent a week in London, took me in his car to
see her and we admired the remnants of her bi , collection of art treasures.
A Professor Felice Jaffe of Geneva called on your Aunt Aniela in Zurich
without tellinc: "fee beforehand. If he had done so I would have advised him not
to. As a result of his visit lie sent her tlie paces concerning yoxir branch,
as far as I Icnovf. I myself have resjiected your Aunt's desire for privacy until
now, thou^ I vould have liked more information about her divorced husb.md.
The Dachau series was published as a h.;aidoome brochure in July 1984.
One can obtain a copy for DM 5,00 from süddeutscher Verla;r GmbH, Munich. I am
happy about the booklet as its chances of survival are ,re;itly inore.ised in
this shape. It is a piece of history which must be preserved for prosterity.
It is almost unbelievable that you are having such a bad suirmer this
year. Here we have a heatwave vfith temperatures over 80 and cont.inuoTis sunshine.
I find it rather tiring. I hope thit your husbcuid's health has improved and
that you will have a nice time in Italy. Please get in touch a ain when you
return from your holiday.
With kindest regards to you and your family.

Liebe Miss JaffI,
habe nun nochmals an meinen Bruder Kurt geschrieben. Sollte
Aber vielleicht be-
exciting! Ich hoffe, Sie hahen angenehme Tage verbracht, v.'as

Dear Kiss Jaffe,
Hope you are v/ell - at least this everlasting vinter is over
and Spring is here!
In my last letter I v.xote that I had .sked my brother Kurt
once more for some dates - and got them! Kayhe Christmas
cookies and Easter eggs helped p-ve the vay, though they v;ere
meant for his extreme hospitality v..'hile I stayed in Denver.

I don't knov; nov; ±h if there are any other dates you need
about members of ray branch.
I v;ould have 'Titten you before, had I had not been run over
hy a bycicle in the Schellingstrasse in riunich four v.'eeks ago!
I üoill Con't hnovz v/hat happened - but anyv/ay I ended up vdth
a hole in my head, bruises etc., in the ambulance. As the say-
ing goes " I needed this like another hole in n-y head"... I am
over it now, and am looking forv'ard to a trip to Greece a veek
from today. Unfortunately, my husband is not feeling v/ell enough
for any longer trips after this v/inter; the cold did not agree
too veil v'ith his heart. So I am taking a 2-i''eek tour vith a
travel agency, accompanied by a niece - but not one for the books,
because she'/a member of ray husbandfe familyl! This is my first
experience v.äth a "pre-fabricated" trip, but maybe it has the ad-
vantage that yQU don't have to bother about anything, just get in
and out! I have never been to Greece before - ajid after 4 months
of v/inter I am looking f or\-/ard to sunshine ag^^ v/ell as culture !
Thank you very much for vriting to Herrn Kolzhaider v.ho proj-iptly
sent ne a copy of "vor Sonnenaufgang". He complained about the
methods of his Verlag in Munich.
I had v/ritten to mjt cousin Aniela after Gabi ' s death, since I
am not in contact with the Herrmann family. She ansv/ered and
it seems that Gabi just fell asleep in the hospital KHd v.'here
she had been after she fell dov.Ti again and had hurt herself.

... that is as far as I F:ot last week before attendlnr. to
more urgent matters.
In a way the delay is quite useful because I can re-
port that Klaus Schlossmann ranp; me up last ni^ht and that
1 find his effort to keep up the contact rather touching.
He kindl; sent me a few months ago new details about his
clan and also a photograph, üe and his wife will be in
Cambridge end of June where a rektive from the Schlossmann
side (Eckstein) is celebrotinR her 90ti birthday. I wish
I could arrange for him to call on Frank Herrman and his
charmin.v; wife Patricia in their manor house in Essex - it
cannot be far from Cambridge. You know Frank is one of
Gabi Herrmann's sons. Klaus told me over the phone that
he had not heard from you for a year. Can you remedy that
and rinr: him up? If you do please encourage him to meet
Frank and Patricia. He also wanted to know where he can
get the "Vor Sonnenauf Rang" booklet. I advised htm to
write to Holzhaider in Dachau, but it would be interesting
to find out whether the Hunich Werbeabteilung functions.
I meant to ask you to look out for newsuaper articles
about my favourite cousin Prof. Ernst Kitzinger, an art
historian who received his doctor's degree at iiunich Uni.
5Ü years airo. There will be a memorial celebration in his
honour to-morrow at the Uni,, •'i-rnst left for Munich a few
days at;o . Do not try to find anything; about the ceremony
in the papers, I told you too late. Ernst K. (distantly
related to you) has been an outstanding scholar since child-
hood, he is now retired and commutes between Princeton and
Oxford, he was made a knight of the order "Pour le Merite"
by the Bonn oyernment in 19Ö2. how silly the Nazis were
to throw the elite out.
i managed to trace in 1934 the descendants of Dr.
B enno Jaffia in Venezuela who are closely related to your
branch. A street in Eerlin is called after Dr. Benno J.
to this day and one of his sons Prof. Dr. med. Rudolf J.
a ;.atolo ist was equally famous. In January this year the
Woabiter Jospital in Berlin held a "üedenkfeier" for him
and a few of the Caracas descendants attended it. Among
them Prof .Kudolf 's daup;hter Use Goldachmidt-Jaffewho
comes to aurope frequently and told me recently in a
letter that she has a flat in Munich, Neherstr.?» I have
no idea when she will be in Munich an-ain, but I told her
in my answer about you. •'•t would be nice if you could
meet. Perhaps you could find out whether she is on the
phone in Munich, by lookinp; her name up in the directory.
She must be about your age, ^ have no time to consult the
family tree now,
I had at Ion. last a letter from Luise Tiktin, Yes,
she will fly with her brother to Europe next month, I am
sure you will see each other. Her brother objects to
family history as strongly as your 2 Wew York cousins do,
so don't tell i.im how "berühmt" I ami 1 am very amused
at Aniela's remark in tne X-mas letter she wrote to you.
I am afraid it is an overstatement, xiowever, it is an
understatement if she calls me "das neue Familien-Zentrum"
I have been at it for 600 odd years on and off I
No room for more. In haste kindest reiards from

Dear hanni.
Better late than never - vinter diesem Motto möchte ich endlich
Man
Im i'Tühjahr
hoffentlich wieder aufnehmen. Haben Sie noch weiter an
^amilienforschimgen gearbeitet, und sind noch fleissig am
^^riefe schreiben und bekommen? 7on Louise Tiktin höre ich von
Zeit zu Zeit, es geht ihr gut. I really think I brought you
up to date!
All the best from both of us,
Yours ,
