THE KENDALL FAMILY
IN AMERICA.

KENDALLS IN ENGLAND.

The Kendalls, Kendals and Kendales, an old Britain
family, notable but not numerous through many cen-
turies, are centered more or less in County Westmore-
land, where the town of Kendall is located on the banks
of the river Ken. The name is found in Lancashire,
Essex, Devonshire, Cornwall and Derbyshire. As early
as the year 1265, Hugh de Kendall was a judge of one
of the lesser courts in Westmoreland.

John Kendall, sheriff of Nottingham, was killed in
the battle of Bosworth in 1485, fighting in the army of
Richard the Third.

The poet Kendale flourished in 1270 and was a con-
temporary of Thomas the Rhymer. He was a writer ot
metrical romances, and is supposed to have written
"The Geste of King Horn," which is mentioned b\
Chaucer as "The Romance of Price."

In the year 1-134, Edmund Kendall appeared in the
records as clerk, and was defendant in a law suit brought
by John Broughton, arminger in St. Hilary.

A branch of the Kendall family in 1573, located in
Thorpthules in Durham, removing from Ripou in York-
shire, wliere the familv had lived for manv vears.

In 1632, in Devonshire, Robert Kendall was a co-de-
fendant in the law case of Collyn vs. Robert Rolle and
Sir Sanuiel Rolle, over lands in County Cornwall. In
1654, Thomas Kendall witnessed a deed in Yorkshire,
from Edward Wydmerpole to his son and heir, William
Wydmerpole. The Duke of York's youngest son known,
as the Earl of Kendall, died in May, 1677. William
Kendall, in 1688 was in employ of Sir Miles Stapleton
at Carlton "on the Leeds road," in Yorkshire.

^ The ancestor of rican Kendall family was

1 John Kendall, who was bom in 160S and died in County

; Cambridge in 1660. Two of his sons, Francis and

/ Thomas came to New England before 1640.

THE KEXDAL.LS IN AI-IERICA.

Deacon Thomas Kendall wi. propria::.: of

Reading. Mass., in 1644 ; was admitted freeman 10 May,
164S. He married Rebecca — and had ten daughters:
Elizabeth K-^^Tidall bom 1642, married John Eaton hj
Watei^ :.. " Alarch, 1658; Rebecca born 1644. mar-
ried 1661, 7 Bout well; Mary bom 1647,- married
1664. A' r;n.ant; Hannah bom 1650, married
1667. T I'^.xi-T; Sarah bom and died 1650; Sarah,
secon n 1653, married Samuel Dun ton; Abigail
bom 1655, married -John Nichols; Susanna born 165S,
married Nathaniel Goodwin; Tabitha bom 1660, mar-
ried John Pearson; and Thomas bom 1663, died 1664.
Deacon Kendall had no son who lived to adult age.

Francis Kendall, son of John, and brother of Thoiiias,
deposed in December, 1658, that his age was about 38
years, making him bom in 1620. In 1662 he made affi-
da%-it that his age was about 48 years which would plaef»
the date of his birth at 1614. He settled first in Charles-
town, but soon after removed to Woburn, where %vith
31 others he signed the town orders IS December, 1640.
In the old registry- of the town of "SVoburn reads the
entry:

"Francis Kendall, alias Miles, and ^Mary
Tedd fTidd' marved 24th of 10th mo. (24
Dec. D-S.i 1644."

Mary Tidd was a daughter of John Tidd. It is
claimed that Francis left England against the wishes
of his family, using the name of ^liles. until he was set-
tled in this country-. Francis was admitted freeman
10 ^lay, 164S. He served the town as selectman, held
numerous other offices and wasdooked upon as "a gen-
tleman of great respectability and influence." He own-
ed and operated a com mill in Woburn, being a miller
by trade. The mill now on the old Kendall homestead
was built by Sarauel Kendall in 1700 and is near the
location of the first mill built bv Francis.

i

\

Francis Kendall died in the year 1708 at the age of
89. His wife Mary Tidd died in 1705. The will of
Francis, dated 9 May, 1706, named his sons, Thomas
and John, as executors. The son Thomas had a son
Samuel who was a very active, public spirited man, en-
gaged in promoting the civil and religious prosperity of
Woburn. In 1732 he received a commission as Lieu-
tenant from Governor Belcher and was widely known
as Lieutenant Kendall.

A physical peculiarity has characterized the Kendall
family for many centuries, — that is, an occasional ex-
cess in the number of the extremities, hands and feet, an
extra finger or an extra toe. An old English medical
book says that from "as long as the 14th century this
mark has been traced, sometimes almost disappearing,
and then coming forth again in full vigor."
